Need someone to test my BMW

I have been working on a tune for my 05 M3, and looking for some feed back. I have shared it, let me know what ya think.

I’ll take a look tomorrow! What are your goals with the tune/driving style? Aimed towards any particular tracks?

I am trying to get under 3 minutes at spa. I have come close with in a few seconds. But mostly want an all around decent lobby car.

Hey bud, I hate to see someone ask for help and not get a response, so I tried your tune out today. It’s a decent tune but I found it a bit loose for my liking. Could be just a difference in driving styles, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. The rear end seems to want to come around a bit too easily, especially on corner entry. I took it around a few of my favorite tracks and the handling was consistent and predictable, so it was very drivable and I set pretty decent times, a couple even a bit better than my previous one’s. I’m not a big fan of Spa, mostly because I don’t do very well there, but you’ll be happy to know I easily was under 3 minutes on my first lap, and that was with a small off track excursion at Au Rouge. My second flying lap with the tires at temp was a 2:50.xxx and that was a far from perfect lap as well.

Alright, just did two laps at Spa. First off, the car can go under 3 minutes as-is. I did a 2:46, then a 2:42 clean. On to the nitty gritty…

As a disclaimer, I never use aftermarket aero in any tune. I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I felt I should share.

The largest issue with the tune I think is the gearing. I don’t know which box you’re using, but first and second are too short, the gap 2-3 is too large, and 4th and 5th are too tall. 6th may as well not even exist. You can gain a lot of time and drivability there alone. One example: I had to downshift 4-3 at the bottom of Eau Rouge, then immediately back up once the car pointed in. That brings me to my second observation…

In stark contrast to Mako’s experience, I feel the car pushes too much. It refuses to enter a corner, especially a fast sweeper, without constant throttle management and left-foot braking. Kind of related to this, it seems like the car has more grip than power. That’s fine if you prefer your cars that way–I’m generally the opposite–but I wanted to mention it just in case.

Positives are the brakes seem very effective (also supported the large tire theory I have) and the suspension seemed to work well at Spa. I’ll try another track or two to give it a bit more of a workout.

Hope that helps!

Stock gearboxes and aero save PI in lower classes, and anything that isn’t considered lower class will benefit from aero in almost every case. I haven’t tried the tune, but as long as he’s not wasting PI on clutches or flywheels, he’s doing fine on the build.

Well thanks guys. As far as gears they are stock so i will look into that and work out the loose rear. Thanks again for the feed back.

I did a 57.8 at Lime Rock, but the car is constantly between gears without quite enough power to hold the higher gear and an oscillating push-rotate-push as I tried to get around Big Bend. The rear end will come around at full throttle in any gear up to and including third, which may be what Mako was talking about, but it’s easy to control with throttle modulation. The gearing and the push cost time though.

2:09.4 at Prague Full, and it seemed to handle the bumps well. Your front brake bias is both realistic and better for stability, but for whatever dumb reason it increases brake distances in this game. Food for thought. The previous comments about gearing and handling still apply here.

As a frame of reference, I tried each of these tracks with my own B tune on an E30 M3. On my first flying lap at each track (just like your tune), I got a 2:43,2, a 57.1, and a 2:08.4

As you can see, the tune isn’t far off. (Assuming my tune is any good. I’d call it a 7/10) Changing those few things I think could make it very competitive and help you break that 3-minute barrier!

Will give it a go tonight, will keep you posted.

Any updates?

I did some more tuning to get the rear end in check and I dont think I shared it. I will check it out in a bit and share it for sure. Thanks for all the input.

That explains a lot, heh. I prefer my cars to feel and act like actual (vintage) race cars; guess that’s hurting ultimately but I’d argue it makes up for it in fun factor. OP, Harmonic would be the one to know so listen to that advice.
