Need some pointers on how to use Manual w/Clutch

  1. The game does not necessarily model gearchange speeds well.

  2. To the extent it does there are some cars where the manual change speed is as good or better than the manual/clutch change speed.

  3. If you have damage off and do not let off the gas for changes then you seem to get some little boosts when you change up that do not occur when you use pure manual.

  4. When some people first use manual / clutch in the game they overcomplicate it and try to do it like they would with a road car. But in game you just press A and B at same time or A and X at the same time so the changes are very fast.

I think it’s better to use the clutch when downshifting, I do anyway. With the Clutch as A configuration, it’s not all that difficult.

Most people say to switch the clutch from LB to A, but I hate having to press A and B at the same time, so just got used to using LB. I keep both index fingers on the triggers until I have to brake, at which point I’ll move my left index finger up to the left bumper and use my middle finger to brake. It sounds really uncomfortable, but it feels pretty natural once you get used to it.

Using A is easy with fat thumbs like mine lol

It is actually no different from just manual.

Can I just ask, as a person who has never successfully made the jump, why it’s faster? I tried it for a bit but thought that I was easily losing as much time between gears as I might have hoped to gain. And, for that matter, I really don’t get why pressing two buttons to change gears should be faster than pressing one. Is there some bonus that I don’t know about? Does using one button initiate a shift that is slower?

The main gain is on older cars with slow gearboxes/clutches.

Some of those cars when on pure manual take forever to change.

With a clutch you control the speed.

From your description however where you say that “I was easily losing as much time between gears as I might have hoped to gain” that sounds like you were not doing it right. When some people first start out they think like they are in their daily driver. They think right I must put in the clutch, then changes gears and then release the clutch. No - press both buttons at the same time (that is why most people swap clutch to A) - there is no extra time added from the presses. Any gains or losses are in the game itself and all get back to does the game change quicker or not.

In short modern, high end cars have quick gear changes and within reason most of these things are modelled somewhat accurate so in the F1 cars you may be better on straight manual.

On the old econoboxes manula with clutch is way faster because the gears change as fast as you can press the buttons. The game basically stops modelling the speed of the real world gear changes.

Forza does not act like real life in terms of how the transmission works.

Automatic: Shifts several hundred RPM’s before redline and is a slow shift.

Manual: You control when it shifts but it is still a slow shift.

Manual with clutch: You must push the clutch in before changing gears, but the gear change is instantaneous. So if you get good you can push the clutch and shift button at almost the exact same time and release both of them at the exact same time and the car will up shift in the time it takes you to push a button. This shaves a little time between every shift you have to make, if you have to shift 15 times on a lap even a tenth of a second every shift will save you a second and a half on the lap.

I’ve only ever just mashed both buttons at once and it’s worked fine. I can’t really tell the difference if I focus on hitting the clutch first and quickly rolling onto the gear change button.

It is faster because the game mechanics make it so. The game gives a bonus to those that can master pressing two buttons at once it is not reflective of reality or whether the car has a sequential gearbox.

Master it and you will be quicker.

The day I started to manual change with clutch, I was faster.

Manual clutch is faster because that is how Turn 10 have programmed it. They are rewarding you for making the game more difficult. Whether or not this is truly realistic or reflective of reality is besides the point for me. It’s more difficult, therefore you are artificially rewarded with more speed.

When driving GT or other race cars it’s actually more realistic using manual shifting without clutch as they use sequential transmissions in RL

GT and other quick shifting race cars (and road cars) don’t need clutch in this game.

Ive found a great control scheme for manual w/clutch

layout 11 with “switch gear up down” on

use middle finger for gas trigger

right bumper for the clutch (right index finger)

right stick for the shifter, up for upshift and down for downshift (thumb)

Its quite a comfortable setup and it’s increased my times.

Hi I am looking for tips on how to use manual with clutch, on the standard Xbox one joypad, as I don’t seem to have enough fingers.
Seems the only way for me to get fast enough for the new Lamborghini rival challenge

Personally i keep the original button layout and use my left middle finger for the brake and my index finger for the clutch.

Ive just gotten used to it over time. Takes a lot of practice though. Keep at it is my only advice, good luck!

Use layout 1 and switch clutch with handbrake. You press both buttons when shifting. Takes 20 mins to get used to then you’re good to go.

maybe have a look at this thread, was about 10 below this one and has been going around for a few days now

OP, man/w clutch works strangely on the controller. Use normal manual and just ease off the throttle (for good measure) when working with a stick-shift. Also, normal manual corresponds to the real-world shift timing of the actual cars, so you have authenticity there.

The clutch only works good when you have a wheel/pedal setup. Personally, I do not like the downshifting sound at all using man/w clutch on the pad. Also a pain to switch between w/clutch and without when driving a paddle-shifter. Just my two.

And, you start out with 4% damage for some reason on man/w clutch. God knows how much damage you’ll do to it over a 6 or 10 lap race. One way or another it gets damaged, no matter how much clean-shifting you do. It is buggy and not properly optimized for the controller.
