Ok guys iv been wanting to learn how to paint and I have never really been good at it so AR Eidolon has been helping me out and gave me a little picture to try just for fun so here it is and also its nothing great I know its simple and easy but im just doing it in steps so be patient
The proportions are a bit of, try using lets say 3 circles to recreate the shape of the mouth (instead of 1 (half) circle)
Try to make the outlines even and as close to the original/source as you can.
The eyes are also not half circles… try placing a (full) circle and cover the bottom part with a square.
^^^ Solid advice… I actually chose this picture because the shapes look very simple but you actually need multiple layers to recreate exactly… Friex took the words right outta my mouth by telling you about layering the circles… All in all it is a solid start
I think some of those things could also be duplicated by skewing the half circle. It may not work out how I’m envisioning it in my head but I think you could get there with the proper x, y, and skew. The only issue with this could be the direction the half circle skews. Without looking at it I think it may skew the wrong axis. When the half circle won’t skew how you need it, using two quarter circles works as the quarter circles skew in a different manner than the half circles. I think the biggest thing on the eye proportions is that they aren’t actually the same as each other.
Just some ideas to play with. It can be helpful to know more than one way to do things because when you are trying to create something that doesn’t encroach on negative spaces so that you can plop a logo on to any background easily once you have it in your library.
It looks like the original yellow circle is centered in the black outline, but it doesn’t appear to be on the hood. Is that an optical illusion from the angle of the pic of the car or is the yellow circle really not at the same x,y coordinates as the black one?
Thought I’d throw in my 2 cents worth. The others above have noted a few things that might help make your vinyl a little more accurate to the original image … all good suggestions. I posted in your other thread about how helpful Photoshop can be. I’ll use your original image to show what I was talking about.
Below is a screen shot of your original image in Photoshop. Using this as a reference really helps you accurately size, shape and position parts of images. For example, it does appear in your FM5 pic that the eyes are the same shape and size and are centered on the face. (Could be an illusion because of the angle of the picture, but that’s what it looks like to me.) The eyes though are very definitely of different shapes and sizes are are not centered but offset to the left of the face. If you look at the eyes in Photoshop, you can see that the left eye (with border) is probably a little more than 3 squares wide. The right eye is probably about 4 squares wide. I think you can see how using a reference like this will allow you to accurately re-create sizes and shapes with the correct dimensions. If you have access to Photoshop (or possibly some other image editor software), this can really be a big help.
Also, with respect to colors, it looks to me like you may have chosen the generic yellow, purple, etc. from the FM5 color squares. Again, it could be an illusion from the picture in FM5 or something … but they look a little brighter than the yellow and purple from the original pic. Now that I use the Photoshop Color Picker, I never even look at the FM5 color squares at all. below, I selected the yellow in the pic and would enter .13 as Hue (48/360), .66 as Saturation and .99 as Brightness and you’ll have the exact yellow from the original image.
Edit: I wanted to check on the yellows … and if you only use the color squares in the game … the only possible yellows are .16/1.00/1.00 … .16/.80/1.00 … .16/.60/1.00 and .16/.40/1.00. So you can see that with out using the Color Fine Tune options for HSB in FM5 … you could get close but you’d never get that exact yellow.
Not bad at all for a first attempt! When I first started designing, I was in the same boat. I had trouble figuring out how to shape, fade, color, overlay, etc. My very first design, which was simply a ‘signature’ for my personal cars, was the Star Trek “Federation” logo, in blue, as the blue part of the Texas flag (for my GT: Star Trek Texan). What I have now is not my first attempt, but an evolved (yet simple) design that’s actually not far from what I started with. I’ve posted the pic below for reference.
For a first attempt that’s actually VERY good. You’ll get better the more you mess with it, and you’ll pick up new skills rather quickly. My designs, I think, are nice BUT, they can’t compare to what some of the painters on here are doing such as Wayne Tomlinson, as an example. But then I’m also not trying to do the insane detail paints these guys are doing! That stuff is impressive.
Do what you want to do for your own designs, upload them for others if you want, or keep them for yourself if you want. As a suggestion - since this is your first painting attempt - once you perfect the “Smiley Face” to where you think it’s finished, incorporate that design into your “signature” for you liveries (like my “Star Trek Texan Design Studios” logo). This way your first steps into the FM painting world will be a part of everything you do from now on!
Hey everyone thank you all for the feedback great advice and very helpful I will eventually get the hang of it lol but does anyone have any more replica ideas they can throw my way for me to try? im just trying to mess around with different things any thing for a newbie would be fun =) im up to try anything
I can get you some I did w shading and even send you the shapes I used so you can see my process you want work in progress photos PM’d? That way you can see how I layer? I don’t send coordinates or anything but the visual might help… I’ll keep em simple until we build your skill
Don’t send the shapes or anything at first let me give it a try on my own just to see how I do then you can tell me what I done wrong and what I can do to correct it =)
I sure hope so lol im usually a fast learner but I like doing it on my own just so you guys can see how my style is and everything but when can you send them to me? I was wanting to work on a paint tonight before I go back to work
minimal shading and most of the actual image shapes are simply circles… looks rough but it’s actually very simple broken down… let me know if you would like something a bit more entry level… hope I can help along the way so feel free to ask questions
Yea that looks rough man lol but hey I got to learn I think I can come close anyway but yea im a question asker for sure lol thanks for all the help I think my biggest problem is getting ideas of what I wanna paint
just try your best buddy you have some juggernauts giving you advice and all of these guys probably know better than me but I’m happy to help until you feel comfortable enough to venture out on your own… practice, practice, practice is how I learned too so anything you don’t think is perfect just rework until you’re happy… that was my routine until I ever posted my first decal… It’ll work itself out with enough effort
O yea I plan on practicing a lot I have been wanting to learn the ropes of painting but just really haven’t gave it much of my time I will play with that design you just gave me to try and upload a picture of what I get done tonight
I’m not the artist that some on here are either … but if you have any specific questions about how I’d do something, just ask. When I started out, I asked and got some advice from people here too.
dont give up… it’s an awesome feeling to create exactly what you want and share it with others… worth the time… like I said there are most that are better than me but I know a couple things that I don’t mind sharing
