Manual with clutch vs no clutch

I have had my G920 for about a month now. Do not have the shiftier. Getting used to running a manual and loving it. I am just doing the paddles with out the clutch. I drive a manual in real life and I am finding myself pressing the clutch at times. LOL

I feel with the paddles I can down shift faster then using a clutch. I am trying to find the advantage other than extra XP for using the clutch in the game. Is there something I am missing that makes using the clutch better? I did searching through posts and agree why the auto is bad. Having a hard time finding good info why the clutch over no clutch is better.

I am still debating on adding the shift to my setup or not. Not sure if that would make the difference with the clutch.

Thanks

As I understand it, manual with clutch is often faster, but you might stall at the start or after being wrecked, depending on the car you drive.

I’m sure others who know more about this can help you out more.

As far as i’m concerned it only makes shifting gears quicker, there is no point in using it in any car that can already shift gears quickly. Personally, I don’t use clutch in pretty much anything within S class and above, especially race cars.

You could upgrade lower class cars to shift more quickly but then you are spending precious pi points.

Adding a shifter to your set up will only increase the “fun factor”. There is no difference between the shifter and the paddles as far as performance. Like Mike said above, in the higher class cars that use sequential shifting, there won’t be much of a difference using manual with clutch. In the lower class cars however it can make a noticeable difference, because you can shift faster than the game. You also actually save PI points because you don’t need to install a race clutch. When using manual with clutch it isn’t needed.

Alrighty, now I get to speak on this from a different perspective. About 4 months ago I was still fighting using the clutch because it just didn’t make sense to me that there was as much a difference between clutch/no clutch. I mean, it was just mashing 2 buttons at once. I was fighting tooth and nail, I let it frustrate me from forza 3 until recently.

While doing all the Rivals HLC’s that I’ve been trying to be fast in, lol, I finally made myself use the clutch. What I have found is, yes. To all you people that said clutch doesn’t make much of a difference, it makes a huge difference. Not 10-15 second difference, but take Bathurst for example, there’s easily a 2-3 second advantage.

As far as the higher class cars, yes and no on the difference. I’d say give each a try to see for sure. I remember an HLC that had that older P Class Porche 86C or whatever. That was much quicker with clutch. Without it, it was like a big heavy muscle car. What I had been told in the past, if you look at cockpit view and the driver uses the paddles you don’t need clutch. So when you see the driver reaching for the gear stick, use the clutch. There is definitely a difference in drag racing, and it’s not always clutch that’s faster there either. Just have to try and see.

Now I don’t use a wheel. Just a crappy controller, getting a bit old, lol. I still use the shoulder, default setup, as my clutch. It makes it more fun for me. Kinda like shifting a motorcycle, lol. I don’t use it when I down shift. For one I don’t run the endurance races so transmission damage isn’t too much of a concern and if you time it right you really don’t need it.

Basically, long story short, I fought the clutch/no clutch fight for a long time. Clutch can be a little more fun, to me, but it is in most cases, much quicker out of every turn and down every straight. Hope that made at least a little sense and helped. Drive on!

Thanks good to know the clutch can help that much off real player experiences.

I have transferred from an alright controller player to an awful wheel player, but oh boy isnt it ten times more fun. Especially with the shifter and manual clutch. (G920)

For me the fun factor comes from trying to learn heel and toe, and when able, left foot braking. While it is terribly hard at times it is incredibly fun when you get it right.

I have raced with the paddles and no clutch (like a sequental gearbox in a race car) and found it much easier, maybe a bit faster, but still fun nonetheless. I just prefer the shifter because for some reason I am terribly into 70-80ies race cars.

I am slowly being able to drive faster than my previous best times with the controller, but I think the keyword here is consistency. My laps times are often quite close to each other.

All in all, I recommend the shifter and manual clutch hearthily, but you need patience and practice. And a will to learn.

Well saw that Best Buy had the G920 shifter on sale for $39.99. Reported to Amazon because they where $49.99. Next day they price matched and I used my gift card. So will have my shifter tomorrow. Going to be fun learning this.

Think I am making a mistake with the paddles I am shifting too much.

I am doing the Ferrari F40 league this week, and was wandering why i was so slow. I watched a replay and thought that my gear changes sounded a bit strange/slow. So to make sure that my controller was ok, and the clutch was registering right i did a test on Monza (i had just messed with deadzones, and thought that the deadzone for the clutch button might mess with this).

I tried the best i could, over two sessions. One with manual gears (aprox 6-7 laps) and one with manual/clutch also 6-7 laps.
For me, using manual with clutch, was almost 2 sec faster, even though manual with no clutch sounded and felt like faster gear changes. So i went back to using manual with clutch, and must just admit that i am slower than i want to admit

The big thing you can do with a manual with clutch set up is power shift. When the game operates the clutch for you it also removes the throttle until the gear is finished changing. With clutch you can keep the rpms up while the clutch is in then dump the clutch and the car will kick and jump forward a little faster. IRL this is a very bad practice because you will end up eating the clutch and destroying gears but in Forza it makes a big difference especially on turbo tunes. You will never lose boost pressure when accelerating.

Hey guys so the answer is actually very simple. And yes even though what I am going to say is true, people will still think I am wrong, but I am telling you what is. You do not need to drive with clutch if you upgrade the transmission and clutch. Meaning if your car has a racing clutch and racing transmission you will not need to have the clutch on, cause the times will be the same.

A lot of high class cars already use racing transmissions and racing clutches like Modern GT cars and Touring Cars. However, lower class cars do not have racing clutches and racing transmissions and a lot of people do not waste PI on them. You can use the extra PI for more useful things like tires or HP upgrades.

Now the down side to having clutch on when you do not need it, is that it may stall off the line. My recommendation is turn clutch off, however, if you do not want to for what ever reason there is a little trick you can do. At the start repeatedly hit the clutch with full throttle this will help get the car moving and keep RPM’s high, once the car starts rolling you can stop pressing the clutch and drive normal.

If your car does not have a racing transmission or a racing clutch TURN CLUTCH ON !!! It may be difficult at first, but after a few laps you will slowly start to get used to it. The reason why you will be 1 to 2 secs faster on your lap times is because since you are manually shifting the car you can do it quicker. Therefore you will always be faster then a person who doesn’t have clutch on in a car that does not have racing clutch or transmission upgrades.

If you have any more questions on the cars feel free to message me here or on Xbox. Username is my gamer tag.

As others have said, there’s no observable difference between the stick shift and paddle shift, besides the immersion factor. Although I find I sometimes find myself in too high or too low of a gear using paddles because I don’t have a physical indication of the gear. With an H-pattern shifter, you are always aware which gear you are in.

The clutch on lower class cars (A and below) is terribly slow. Unless you upgrade every single low class car to run with a race transmission, you will notice a significant difference when running Manual w/ Clutch.
