"Liberty" vinyl group tutorial

Here’s a tutorial on how to do the “Liberty” pattern, like found at:

Start with your base red color. It’s a bit brighter than actual flag color, but we’re matching the original design. I usually make the wheels white and the brakes the same shade of red.

Next up is a blue block. Here’s the shade:

Cover the front part of the hood:

Next, a “nike swoosh” primitive shape to curve the hood line closer to the rear of the wheel well.

Copy, flip vertical, then mirror the vertical position:

Next up, the side.
Grab a right triangle primitive. Adjust the width so that the angle will fit well with the stripes later. It’s default of a 45 works on shorter cars, but on the longer vehicles like trucks I’ll tend to shorten the base so that the stripes will stretch the length better. Align the top of the triangle with the blue on the hood.

A big blue block covers the red and completes the blue “square” area:

A paint splat following up the triangle helps complete the painted look.

Now I flip to the front of the car, and slap a giant blue block over it:

Mirror those other side components to the other side. Make any necessary adjustments from the mirror process. None were needed on this car, but often you’ll need to move things slightly up or down to get everything to line up.

A couple more paint splats on the hood and we’re done with the blue:

Now on to the white vinyl groups.
Stars!

I usually hop to one of the sides and put as big a star as I can fit, and use that as the base star size:

Then it’s the hood stars:

Finally, the white stripes:

I use the “tear” vinyl shapes for most of the stripes. This one kinda looks like flames, too. Bonus! Make sure they get put under the blue block so they don’t show over the blue star section.

Two more tears. and I flipped the second one both vertically and horizontally to give it a different look:

A skinny paint splat down the center completes the look:

Now for the sides. I go back to that flame tear:

Flip horizontal, flip vertical, and fit it in the top stripe:

Put in another tear, and make sure the spacing is somewhat even between the white and red (adjust width as needed). Then another flip horizontal and vertical to fit in the bottom stripe:

Mirror the stripes over to the other side, and then move them down below the blue layers.

That’s pretty much it!
