What do the numbers mean by the class letters?
By the way, does anyone else notice that the driveatars like to brake check you at high speeds so you then ram the back of them almost without warning?

That is the Performance Index and determine which class the car is in. It is a way to determine how cars compare to each other.
Yes they do - be careful tailing them. At least they do it in generally the same spots.
the numbers are your performance index, like the guy above me said.
yes, drivatars will occasionally brake at places where you don’t need to brake (several sweepers, eau rouge, etc.) never follow directly behind them. just remember, if there is a sweeper coming up, move to the side and the drivatar will take care of the pass for you.
Maybe the driver of that drivatar uses assisted braking?
Brake check is when the driver touches the brake pedal for the purpose of surprising the following driver, forcing him/her to take evasive action.
Drivatars DO NOT CARE if you are following them or not. What they do, however, is ENSURE that they do NOT exceed the traction limit. From my experience, Drivatars and former AIs behave similarly when they encounter tire slip; they brake to STABILIZE the car.
I also do this sometimes to balance the car going through chicanes such as Road Atlanta Turns 2/3. I am not trying to catch the driver off-guard; I’m balancing my car. On highspeed corners where AI typically brakes for stability, I choose to manage the car stability through fine steering corrections and throttle modulations instead of braking. And this is exactly what Drivatars are missing and the reason that they will NEVER be as fast as human drivers; Drivatars cannot manage/tolerate high tire slip angles.
If one has driven enough behind AI, their pattern is noticeable & also very predictable. For eg. Turn 3 (right sweeper) at Yas Marina. AI will almost always try to balance their car in the middle of the corner. So, don’t EVER follow a drivatar up close through this corner. Take a wide line on the outside and you can pass drivatars with ease instead of blaming them for brake checking.
Racing in all about anticipation. Anticipate Drivatars’ behaviour then react accordingly for more successful (less stressful) outcome.
Letters simply designate which number range the car falls into. Therefore PI of 400 is a D class car or D400. PI of 401 is a C class car or C401. You can enter C401 into a C class race but it will not be very competitive since C401 is at the bottom of the scale. The car would be more competitive if it was upgraded to higher number, usually maxed to C500.
D = 0~400
C = 401~500
B = 501~600
A = 601~700
S =701~800
R =801~998
X =999+
