I’ve read enough about FM8 to know that my PC won’t be able to run it well, so I’ve now got $100 to spend on another racing game. I’ve been thinking about buying FH5. Should I go for it? Is the game worth owning, particularly if I enjoyed FH3 and FH4?
yes, it’s pretty close to the full game it should have been at launch, now is actually the best time to buy it
Why not try both with a $1 Xbox Ultimate Gamepass Trial for 14 days?
Although I did played previous FH games, I didn’t really get into series until FH4 which I loved, so much so, I pre-ordered FH5 for the early access (I don’t buy new games often and wish I hadn’t this time)
At that time (and to some extent even now 2 years in) there were bugs. In my experiance not enough to ruin the game enjoyment but enough to be irritating (if that make sense) and this “irritating” trend, from what i’ve read so far, has continued over to FM8 hence I won’t be getting it for at least the first year.(but I digress)
Is FH5 worth getting now ? IMO I’d say yes, is it as engaging as FH4 - probably not but still enjoyable.
As @geistwriter has said above, it’s now more like the game it should of been at release.
However, the first thing you’ll notice even now when first playing is the emptiness of the map. In FH4 when looking at the map there would be player dots everywhere, here however, player dots only show when near you which make you feel like your the only one playing a lot of the time.
Sure there are stll some minor bugs and the rivals leader boards still and probably always will have cheated times posted but for some, it’s not a massive part of the game so they probably won’t or can’t implement a fix for this.
You still get the wall riders and rammers in races but thats the same whatever racing game you play and even the AI cars for the most part race like it a demolition derby.
The expansion packs are better than in FH4 and offer a good selection of tracks and terrain to race through, even the hotwheels pack is ok which I was sceptical about after the lego pack in FH4.
Car packs are good with some new cars including various electric cars which perform better than I expected.
Bottom line:
Is it worth the money now: I’d say yes. Are you a bit late to the party, possibly. (I should imagine there will be more people leaving than coming to FH5 with the release of things like FM8 and The Crew)
Yes this game has a ton of entertainment value still imo and well worth the admission price. I log in and play every day not because I have to rather because I want to play a video game for the fun and some of the challenges along the way. In fact this was my first FH (title) series playing full on because of as kids we had other than xbox consoles but got snippets while at friends houses. Then as an adult irl sometimes gets in the way too. I enjoy this title so much i picked up FH 4 on sale a few months back to check that out too, That alone should say something.
If you like to race online then i should pass on it and find something else. Online is 60% rammers (kids?) 30% meta cars so unless you use a meta car also you prob wont win. 9% cheaters and 1% serious racers but if you like to drive around and tune and upgrade cars then sure it’s worth it.
Thank you gentlemen, much appreciated. I will certainly keep your comments in mind. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but I’ll see how I feel in a few days.
Right now I’m enjoying plenty of older arcade racers from mainly Sega and Namco from the 90’s. The following are among the best in my opinion…
Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6(my current fav)
OutRun 2 SP DX
Daytona USA
Daytona USA 2
Scud Race
Sega Rally Championship
Sega Rally 2
Sega Rally 3
F-Zero AX
Ridge Racer
Ridge Racer 2
Rave Racer
Initial D Arcade Stage 0
…the above are some of my favorite racing games of all time. Easy to get into but hard to master is the name of the game and I love them all to death. Sometimes I honestly have to ask myself, do I really need any more arcade racers in my in library, when I have the aforementioned games to play, and they’re still so good? I guess we’ll see
FH3 is worth buying in 2023.
Let’s just say that GamePass is worth buying in 2023 so you are not locked into just FH5 out of the series.
