In Need of a Good Way to Learn about Cars

Hi! So I that many people here know hoards about cars and I’m hoping a few of you might be able to help me.

I want to learn about cars, but I’m not sure where to start.

Most of general internet searching has led to tons of places that deal with how to do specific repairs and how to get into working on a physical engine and the like. But, that’s not what I’m after. I’m looking for a resource that will explain more of what things do and how they interact. Playing Forza games has definitely brought this interest to the surface and it’s the primary place that I’ll actually apply anything I learn. I’ve always wanted to know these things, but I’ve never been sure where to start.

I have some vague general knowledge, but it’s very vague and very general. I’m hoping to find a good resource to build on my general knowledge of how cars work and hopefully explain some of the following things. For example, I’ve got a basic understanding of FWD vs RWD vs AWD. But, I’ve noticed that not all cars of the same drive type have the engine in the same place. What effect does that have on things, if any? Does adding a differential (I hope I got that term right) have a greater impact on one drive type versus another? When changing the aspiration of a car there are multiple options. One seems to always add the most speed and launch and such. So why would I use the other ones? What are lateral G’s and why should I care about them?

I’m looking forward to any help anyone can give!

If you’ve got an account, this is a fantastic resource to use. It’s what we used at college, very detailed, yet easy to understand.

There is a youtube channel called EngineeringExplained. The videos do a good job of explaining how engines, suspension and the big picture come together.

l think the guy who made them started in his bedroom and today he is a semi-professional online car journalist.
