Historic Road Racing Homologation Hot Lap Challenge & Tuning Comp at Road Atlanta (Results In)

sk15kev, 69 Chevrolet Camaro SS = 1:37.198
I really liked this one. Did what I wanted when I wanted. A nit would be a little wiggle on entry while trail braking where it danced between being loose and tight that required compensation. Take away the Firebirds (lots and lots of laps) and Moss’s Cuda (lots of previous experience and preference for his tunes, in that car, on this track) and this is the fastest I have run. What else can I say? Excellent tune.

Crash

Thank you Crash
Thank you Snowman too for giving it a go. Appreciate that it is not an easy drive.

I posted build and tune on the tuners thread.
Camaro SS build and tune

Finally the Javelins

Crucian4, 71 AMC Javelin = 1:37.321
Thank you for taking my challenge to bring a no aero Javelin. I am going to enjoy driving past everyone in the lobbies with this one. The bet part is that it really isn’t that slow in the corners either. It has more but I kept changing my shifting pattern each lap and never really settled in on one. It turned in 3rd but you had to be perfect and occasionally I struggled with on slow corners with the tail sliding around on me. Another great tune.

AOT Gemini, 71 AMC Javelin = 1:38.000
That’s 1:38 flatT! Another head scratcher because it felt really good. There may have been a little mid corner push but honestly I think I was just on a Sunday drive and suck in muscle memory from Crucian4’s lower grip tune. My Javelin is a no aero LeMon build with stock brakes so it is possible that I was just slowing down too much for the corners.

MARsSPEED, 70 Cougar = 1:37.684
Rerun - still loosing time with a little too much enthusiasm in the right foot. I knew that time was off.

Hey everybody,

More feedback and times from me:

'69 T/A:

The Zerone - 1:37.948 This SHOULD have been a new PB for me, but I botched my braking a little at the end! My best with the '67 Vette was 1:37.940! Man, this car is AWESOME! Light, quick, does anything you ask it to, and never puts a foot wrong. Man, seriously excellent! LOVE THIS CAR!!!

'70 Cuda:

HLR Moss - 1:38.580 Maybe the best Cuda I’ve ever driven. For such a large, heavy car, it is remarkably composed and easy to drive. It actually drives like it is much lighter than it is. The diff is spot on, the brakes are excellent. Of course it has that Hemi scream…what’s not to love with that? LOVE this car! I will definitely use this car as a Cuda benchmark! Great job, Moss! (But then, I expect this of you. )

Mercury Cougar:

MARsSPEED - 1:39.498 Man, this car is deceptively quick! It doesn’t feel like it is working hard, but with patient driving, this car is very fast. Just don’t try to muscle it, and you’ll be rewarded. I’ve driven MARs’ cars before and we’ve had some friendly battles in the Ghost Leagues, so I know how good his cars are. Excellent job!

OdinThe1337 - 1:39.899 Another excellent Cougar! Another very fun drive, also deceptively quick. For some reason, I had a little trouble getting the last corner right onto the long back straight, but that is probably just my driving! Great job, Odin!

AMX:

Crucian4 - 1:38.869 Wow! This is a speed burner!!! This car, for me, had the highest top speed on the long back straight. I touched 150 a couple of times and routinely hit over 148! Geez, this thing will kill people on other tracks! Awesome sound, too! It is a little hairy to stop, though! After that 150, it is “Whoa, Nelly!” I’m looking for the parachute deploy lever! LOL!

'70 Camaro:

Moto - 1:39.211 Very balanced car, excellent turn in. Feels light and responsive. I think I need to find better shift points for the 4-speed cars. I didn’t do this one justice. Excellent job, Moto!

AMC Rebel:

iHoBo xx: 1:38.181 Man, where has this car been all my life!!! LOL! Amazing car and tune! I can find no faults with this. Balance, accel, turn-in, brakes…everything is just spot on. And the SOUND!!! I think this car has the best sound of any musclecar. It just flat-out screams! This will decimate lobbies!!!

I think that will be it for me for driving in this comp. I would have loved to try Holty’s Falcon, but for some reason, it is locked and I can’t find it to even buy! :frowning:

This has been an awesome comp! Much thanks to Crash for putting this on, and to everyone who tuned and drove! I now have a bunch more guys to watch, tuning and driving-wise. AND, I’ve gotten a little better driving at one of my favorite (and most challenging) tracks.

Much regards to all,

Snowman

I’d like to thank all drivers that have taken the time to report back with times. Currently I have four cars with only two times. I really need at least three for each car to have a meaningful Golden Wrench competition. Request drivers willing to continue running cars up to the deadline prioritize the following four cars:

CXR ELITE UCCIO
l Holty l
HLR Mick
Dartz IRL

Thanks,
Crash

Hey Crash,

Okay, here are some more times:

'77 Torana A9x

CXR Elite Uccio - 1:38.266 Excellent, very quick car! Nice balance, no bad habits, nice accel. Great growl! It is nice to see a great tune on the Torana. I always thought it was a sleeper. You proved it, Uccio! Nice job! I really enjoy this car.

'73 XB Falcon

Dartz IRL - 1:39.547 Super smooth tune, excellent handling! You can place this exactly where you want it! It takes the esses section fantastic! Very fun drive, but it is down on power. This would be a nice, fun challenge for a great driver to beat others in higher powered cars. Really fun car. Nice job!

'65 Mustang

HLR Mick - 1:38.982 Excellent balanced tune. Great fun through the final turn. You can take that full on with confidence. It is very nice through the esses section onto the shorter straight. I wish it pulled a little harder though.

HLR PRKid - New PB! 1:37.618 Very fast car and a little loose. It feels a little soft, but it is so fast, I don’t know if I’d try to fix it. I believe the diff accel setting is a little high, though. I think it would be more consistent and a little easier to drive taking a couple of points off the accel. But great job PRKid!!!

I don’t know why I can’t see or buy Holty’s car. I would have loved to try it! Is it some sort of award car or something? Man, I don’t like the way FM7 doles out the cars…very disappointing.

In the end though, all these cars are really good. I think it is just about driving what you are most familiar with and most comfortable. As I said before, awesome group of cars, tuners, and drivers!

Anyway Crash, that’s all I got! Let the chips fall where they may! I love Road Atlanta, but time for a break!

Cheers,
Snowman

I’m probably in the wrong thread, but I been inspired by it to start tuning again. I have a 70 Vette tune file name hrz and if someone could give it a spin and provide feedback that would be great. It does understeer a little into fast corners but it is intended as it suits my trail breaking style of driving. I have aero on it but I’m wondering if it would be faster without. I’ll make a version without called hrz2 if anyone feels inclined to take it for a spin. Thanks.

Update: yup, no aero much quicker.

Holty 1.35.748
I am a very aggressive driver and I drive lots of awd cars so I can handle understeer in the right settings. Oversteer is not my cup if tea and I struggled with the fish-taily rear end of this car. I tried to be “slow in fast out” (less aggressive) but I just couldn’t keep the rear from swinging here and there. It is simply down to preference on this one…

AOT Gemini 1.35.832
We can talk about it later bud.

OdinThe1337 1.37.064
I don’t know where to start here. It drove nice, rotated well and held good lines, but every lap I was surprised how slow my time was.

CoastKey 1.37.371
The car handled fine but I had a problem with decel understeer and sometimes it would go into a flat spin… which is, sort of, two opposite effects. I also wonder what brake pressure you are using, 80%? As I had to brake much earlier than anticipated.

HLR Mick 1.37.392
Man this thing drove well but was under powered for this track. At a grip track I bet this thing would shine. Only minor problem for me was some throttle oversteer, mainly at top of 1st hill and exiting down back straight.

Dartz IRL 1.37.933
The car was good, stable & predictable, but low hp and the roll cage really slowed down the car resulting in a poor lap time.

KnuckleTune 1.38.243
The diff seems really low on this car as I could barely turn the wheels without the inside tire slipping. The inside rear tire also practically lifted of the ground accentuating the low diff and the car also suffers from a lack of body roll. I am guessing the roll bars are set really high?

Thanks for running the car. First real tune I did for FM7, goal to make it smooth, safe, consistent and drive well with the wheel. Lap after lap, no drama, no crashes, no spins.
So quite happy with the feedback. I already have a variant with the brake pressure dropped down drastically that counters the locking of the brakes when driving without ABS. Allowed me to improve my best time with the car.
I could try a version with a build that has more power, while keeping the same driving characteristics.

Times up the track is closed! We have a WINNER!

WINNER = The Zerone who took both the fastest driver and fastest tuner title. In true over achieving style he was the only other driver besides myself to run every car in the competition. Well Done!

A shout out also goes to both iHoBo for tuning the fastest car not run by its creator and again to The Zerone for posting the fastest lap in a car created by someone else.

Now drum roll please…. The coveted accolades

Golden Wheel = RPM Swerve with a standard deviation of only 0.522 seconds across multiple cars.

Golden Wrench = HLR Mick with a standard deviation of only 0.764 seconds across multiple drivers.

A shout out also goes to gtFOOTw for giving HLR Mick a run for his money. His tune was the only other one within striking distance of Mick’s and depending how you manipulated the data it could have gone either way. The deciding factor was when only the times of the four drivers that ran Mick’s car were looked at, Mick clearly was the winner.

DISCLAMER – Times submitted by drivers who drove less than 3 cars were excluded from consideration in the Golden Wheel/Wrench competition.

I would like to thank all the tuners that provided a complete field of superb quality. I would also like to thank all the drivers that toiled for many laps to provide all the time data and critical feedback.

After hours times and reviews are always welcome. A full list of all the times will be posted once I figure out how,
Crash

Thanks again for all your hard work, Crash!

You DA MAN!!!

Woohoo!

Truth be told I meant to run all cars but got sidetracked in career. Got burnt out and was itching to further my progress in career.

I’d still like to finish what I started.

Well… As much as I want to run all these cars I need more cash to do so and apparently I only have 3 days left to pick up a certain Pagani. I am not liking to have to choose as I want to do both but, I don’t know if or when the Pagani will be available again. Not liking the specialty dealer vibe at all.

Well done Micke, Zerone and Swerve.
Thanks Crash for the first comp for FM7 and very fine one too!

Well It seems I have something to improve upon… once again…
On the flipside, I think I know where I got lost in this one, and hearing comments about other cars give be pretty good base upon where I have gone wrong, and how to improve even in completely different class of cars.

Congratulations for winners.
And thank you.
