Gearbox & clutch question

I want to know if anyone of you already test the impact of the shifting time reduction. I know that a better gearbox allow us to play with the gears ratio and gives stats boost, but my question is really just about the shifting time reduction.

Since you can get about -0.2sec shif time, i assume that I could get that 0.2sec more of acceleration/decceleration compare to someone without it. Does it worth to spend some PI for the shifting time reduction or keep them for upgrading some other aspect of the car? Or I shouldn’t at all look at that stats because the impact in-game is too small?

More often than not stick with the stock gearbox unless the gears aren’t getting you or keeping you within the power range or they are awful for the track…

Clutch: don’t upgrade the clutch at all if you are running manual with clutch as this upgrade really only applies to manual and automatic. Only use clutch upgrade as a last resort for weight reduction or pi capping.

+1

The clutch depends on the PI cost, the shift time improvement, the power curve/gearing, the pi for the gearing upgrades, and how/if that fits into your finished intended pi. 99% is not worth it.

Gearing, It depends on the PI cost, the power curve, cost of cams and PI value of cams and if cams is affordable. Most of my cars run stock and street gearbox.

I agree with every answer posted allready.

I once did some testing driving on manual without clutch, and if so gearbox Stock/Street is always enough unless there is no available street gearbox, and stock just doesn’t work. (Example Honda CRX Mugen most of the time does not work.)

Benefit of upgraded clutch is negligible, but if you can get it in with 1 stage lower driveshaft or 2lbs heavier rims you MIGHT benefit from it, How ever as I tested it on 3 cars, on 3 tracks, with only 7 laps and the benefit was only 0.01 - 0.1 second on 2 out of 3 tracks I’d say it’s just not worth it. Specially as those who actually are bit faster usually drive manual with clutch.

Driving with manual clutch is like dropping “hyper clutch” in to the car. as you can take almost full second off your shift time + (if you are on straight) you get clutch kick effect in to it, when you shift while running on full throttle, which gives you minor speed boost. (or causes wheelspin on low speeds)

Therefore I’d say that clutch upgrade is viable only in PI capping the car, Sport transmission MIGHT have some benefit if it’s very cheap on PI. (0-5 PI)

I’d say only real viable options for gearbox and clutch are when you are building a car where you cant quite fit good enough tires, but it seems to be too powerful for it’s own good.

Thanks all for the answers! Very appreciated.

A friend plays with automatic gearbox, does all this apply too or it just apply to manual?

automatic is so slow that almost nobody uses it. It’s that much of a disadvantage in the majority of classes.

But the benefits of clutch upgrade are greater for automatic according to some testing performed by Don a few years ago. I’d imagine race gearbox with tuned gears would be needed for auto users on cars where the game keeps shifting at poor times.

I absolutely agree with swerve. Automatic does not know when to shift, with some builds are “no go” for drivers who use automatic. (5.7 V8 shifts 1500rpm too early and Rally 1.6 Turbo shifts 1500rpm too late. Therefore if one drives on automatic, he should avoid those engines at all costs. the affect is same on most other engines, although not as drastic.

If one still prefers to drive automatic, Gearbox is just about must have part, and the gears need to be tuned fairly well. and clutch should be avoided because so much PI have been spent on gearbox allready.

I don’t fully agree, Most times are done in auto (just most top times are not in auto).

Also Auto does not, does not know when to shift, it just shifts at red line or a set rev.

Also I would say 5.7 and 1.6 is not a bad choice for auto and depending on the car’s stock gearbox good be very good.

Also for Auto, Clutch would be looking a lot better of a upgrade than manual or manual clutch because of the faster shifting and less of a loss of power (most likely because if shifts the majority of the time (for the next gear and engine) too early. Still not a good choice but I could see it getting used 10 times more at about 10% of the time.

Automatic should be 100% avoided in the 1.6l… 5.7 isn’t such a dramatic speed difference but it still shifts to early. I would still say the 3.7l is the best auto trans motor to drive in the game in my opinion. If an automatic trans has to be used i would personally use clutch before a trans swap just because a transmission can cost a lot of pi. If it works in the pi favor then I would use trans over clutch.
