Forza Horizon 3 - Game Guide / FAQ

FH3 FAQ: Accessibility Support

Does FH3 support visually impaired (blind, color blind) and physically impaired players?
Video settings can adjust Brightness and subtitles. 13 controller layouts change inputs. “Playground Games and Turn 10 both share the goal of making our games more accessible to more gamers. Playground Games actually has a very close working relationship with SpecialEffect (and in fact has helped them with recent fundraising events, in addition to technical consultations related to accessibility in games).”^ “Altcontroller just works with Forza Horizon 3, “out of the box” so to speak.”^

Can I play FH3 in my country?
Xbox game discs and codes are not region locked but see Xbox.com for the list of countries/regions where the Live service is supported. “Game features that require the Live service are only available in these countries/regions.”

Can I choose the game language regardless of my region?
“Forza Horizon 3 will be fully localized (voice and text) for English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, and German, and Spanish (Mexican). and includes language support (text) for Italian, Polish, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.”^ See discussion thread. Xbox One games use the console setting by default, see Xbox Support. In Windows 10 go to Start > Settings > Time & Language > Region & Language - this control is synced across all devices on your Microsoft Account (see Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings > Language Preferences).

FH3 FAQ: Consoles

Will FH3 look better on the Xbox One S than the regular Xbox One?
The console architecture is the same for the One and One S, but the Xbox One S is enabled for High Dynamic Range (HDR) display. You would need to use a monitor that supports HDR display in order to see the benefit of higher contrast ratio between shadows and bright lights; the game will look the same on a non-HDR display for both the Xbox One and Xbox One S. The One S can also upscale to fill a 4K monitor screen, but does not output gameplay at 4K (dvd/streamed video only). There is no resolution or fps difference between the two consoles. Project Scorpio will have improved architecture and will output at 4K when it is released at the end of 2017. See the related discussion thread.

Will Xbox release a FH3 Edition console like the blue one for FM6?
Unknown. The Xbox One FM6 Limited Edition console was released September 2015. See the related discussion thread.

How much storage do I need for the game? Can I set the install location drive?
The basic pre-load installation size is on console is 46GB^ but add-ons and other files may make this larger over time. See size discussion thread. On Xbox One go to Settings > System> Storage for external devices and My Games & Apps > Games > on FH3, press Menu button on controller and select Manage Game to move to an external storage device. See Xbox Support page about storage.

What is FH3’s framerate and resolution on the Xbox One and Xbox One S?
FH3 on both versions of the Xbox One runs at 30fps 1080p.^ See the discussion thread.

Does FH3 require an always-online connection or can I play offline?
#ForzaHorizon3 does not require a persistent connection to the Internet for playing single-player modes”^

How are Kinect and Cortana used in FH3?
Kinect is not required but can be used for voice-activated GPS (ANNA).^

FH3 FAQ: Overview

I’m new to Forza: How does it differ from other car games?
The Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon series of games overlaps the Sports and Adventure genres. While there are voice actors and named characters, as well as career progression, the driver of the car is not a playable character outside the car. Forza games do not feature police, crime, or weapons. Players will see animals in the game, but don’t expect roadkill features. The focus of the Forza brand is on the enjoyment of driving and love car culture.

How is Forza Horizon 3 different from Forza Motorsport 6 etc?
The Forza Motorsport series of games take place on closed circuit tarmac tracks depicting real world locations (Le Mans, Daytona, etc). Forza Horizon 3 is an open world game where drivers can choose their own route through city streets and go offroad. The world of Forza Horizon 3 takes place in a compressed version of Australia, highlighting the varied terrain as well as depicting known landmarks. Motorsport and Horizon games share the same physics and lighting engine (ForzaTech), with slightly more forgiving handling in Horizon, but not “arcadey.” The theme of Forza Horizon 3 is a fictional music festival where the player is the boss: “That means you’ll be making the big decisions that affect the festival. From choosing when and where to expand the festival sites, all the way down to the music that is played and the events that take place – the decisions are up to you. Your goal is to win fans until your festival is the most popular in the world.”^

Is Forza Horizon 3 suitable for my child?
Forza games are designed to be playable by a range of skill levels, and offer driving assists that allow inexperienced players to point and go or harder difficulty settings to challenge experienced racing game players. FH3 is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB (and PEGI 3 in Europe), for “Mild Lyrics, Mild Violence” due to car collisions.^ The game’s song selections are typical of pop radio, and can be switched off. Xbox’s Code of Conduct prohibits car designs that contain vulgarity. In online multiplayer, players may be exposed to unrestrained audio chat from other players, who can be muted. Most of the game features are accessible within an hour from starting the game; completion of the main elements may take more than a dozen hours, with a full completion time that may take over 100 hours.

What is the minimum I need to play Forza Horizon 3? Do I need a steering wheel?
You do not need to own or have played previous Forza games in order to play FH3. The Standard version of the game costs $60 and is available either for the Xbox One family of consoles or Windows 10 PCs with the necessary performance and storage requirements. FH3 is not available for the Xbox 360 or other brand consoles. Other than a monitor the only other equipment requirement is a compatible controller (“gamepad”), which is included with retail console packages or available separately for PC use. A steering wheel, pedals, and shifter setup is not required. Kinect and a headset are not required but will enhance the playing experience in solo and multiplayer modes. An Xbox Live account is required to sign in on the console and PC. A paid Xbox Live Gold membership is required for multiplayer on the console but not required for multiplayer on the PC. Only one copy of the game on a console with Gold membership is necessary for guests on that console to play the game and have access to downloadable content add-ons. In-app purchases are not required to complete the game. See the Support topic for discussion about physical and visual impairment, and the Hardware section for discussion of technical issues.

FH3 FAQ: Troubleshooting

Why can’t I find/install FH3 in the Windows Store? I just want to buy for PC.
If you are having trouble finding/buying/downloading the game from the Windows Store, the cause may be your Windows version. Your local region may also not be supported by Xbox Live, or your PC may not meet the minimum requirements. You can also try clearing the Windows Store cache by running WSRESET.exe from Cortana. You don’t need to own a console in order to buy Play Anywhere games for PC, which are available from the Xbox App for Windows, Windows Store (Microsoft.com), and as codes from retailers. See this video tutorial about installing Play Anywhere games. Once purchased and installed to PC, the game will be listed under Settings > Apps & Features. See discussion thread.

The Demo doesn’t save progress or allow me to enter the Festival site (or other features).
It’s not supposed to - it’s a demo. The demo restarts from the beginning each time you play it so you can choose different starter cars. Progress will not carry over from the demo to full game. A demo for PC will be available sometime after launch.^ See discussion thread.

Some of my menu items are greyed out; I can’t access the Car Meet or Blizzard Mountain.
Unlocking the full menu requires career gameplay progress. Blizzard Mountain becomes accessible when you select your third Festival Site. (200,000 fans)^

How do I get tech support if I have trouble with installation or running the game?
Forza Horizon 3 Support - Xbox One forum with Known Issues thread
Forza Horizon 3 Support - PC forum with Known Issues thread, Supported Wheels, error codes, online connection troubleshooting etc
See Gaming on Windows and Xbox on Windows 10 under Xbox Support at Xbox.com for install, freezing, uninstall/reinstall, audio/video, sign-in, and gameplay issues with Windows 10 games. See the Windows 10 FAQ to make sure your system is up to date.

Help! Something isn’t working!
First, check the Xbox Live Status to see if there are any current known network issues; if yes then all you can do is wait. Next: Reboot. Rebooting your system solves most issues, especially after you’ve recently installed or updated software, or have had a long uptime. Also look in your Settings > System for a console update or Settings > Update & Security for a PC update - install any available, go through the reboot, then try again. (On PC, have you installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update? You may not have, even if your PC says you have the latest update. Go to Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 update history - Microsoft Support to be sure.) Finally, look for solutions in the topics below and existing forum threads rather than creating new threads. Sometimes even unplugging and then rebooting routers and other connected network devices can make a difference.

FH3 FAQ: Enforcement and Contacts

Code of Conduct, Enforcement, and Game bans
Players may find certain game features (multiplayer, storefront etc) temporarily disabled due to Code of Conduct violations, which include inappropriate user-created content (designs) and griefing. “Deliberate wrecking is no more welcome in Horizon’s online racing than it is in Motorsport. For who think otherwise, fair warning.” (see Rules of Engagement discussion thread). An easy guideline is to remember that this is an E for Everyone game. See Enforcement.xbox.com for how to Mute, Block, Avoid, and File a Complaint about offending players. See also Gaming on Windows 10 Policies & Enforcement. Note that enforcement issues are not allowed as open topics of conversation on the forums.

Will enforcement in a previous Forza game affect my ability to play FH3?
Unknown.

How do I contact Turn 10?
Per the forum Code of Conduct, “constructive criticisms and suggestions are welcome, provided they are directed to Turn 10 Administration via private e-mail, here: forzafb@microsoft.com.” If you are communicating a problem with your game or account, provide as much detail as possible in clear language. You will receive an automated response confirming your message was received, and you may or may not receive a followup response. Some basic information questions may receive a response from the official Twitter account www.twitter.com/Forzamotorsport but enforcement questions should only be directed to the email address. A list of forum Moderators is in the Code of Conduct but moderators are not Turn 10 employees and cannot answer some game account questions.

Click the “Learn more” link to load the support page and then click “Get the Anniversary Update now” to install it.

How much storage do I need for the game? Can I set the install location drive?
The suggested available drive space during Windows Store installation is 60GB. See size discussion thread. To set your PC installation drive, go to Settings > System > Storage > New apps will save to selection (physical drives only). If the option to select a drive is greyed out, update your Windows version (see above Q&A). See discussion thread. See Xbox Support page about storage.

What is FH3’s framerate and resolution? Can it be unlocked on PC?
Framerate will be unlocked on PC and capable of 4k resolution.^ “Forza Horizon 3 players will have a tremendous amount of adjustment options when playing on Windows 10. From basic options like full screen, vertical sync, and resolution, to more advanced adjustments like quality settings for motion blur, mirrors, reflection, static and dynamic geometry, we’re giving Windows 10 players the power to play the way they want. Is TrackIR supported?
Unknown. See discussion thread.

FH3 FAQ: Technology and Apps

What is Forzatech?
“The Forza franchise is built on what we call Forzatech, that’s our engine, our rendering and our physics engine, and both games are built on the same platform, and we evolve that between the two studios over time.”^

DirectX and Universal Windows Platform (UWP)
"Microsoft has employed in-house team Turn 10 Studios to convert its Forza Motorsports engine to the UWP format. “The Forza Tech engine is now DirectX 12 and UWP so Apex is just the start of that,” said Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt. “It was something we had to do for technology reasons, but it was also something we wanted to do to make the platforms better. We wanted to make UWP and DX 10 better for everybody.”^

Photogammetry technology
The Australian skies were captured with a custom 3-camera 12K HD rig, and hi-def landscape photos were turned into game-ready 3D objects using a technique called “photogammetry.”^ See discussion thread.

Will we be able to modify the game on Xbox or PC (like Fallout)?
FH3’s Blueprint feature allows players to create their own custom events based on existing routes and cars in the game. See the discussion thread about Fallout- and PC-style mods.

Is there a companion app for FH3?
“No plans for a companion app as such”^ (for in-game features) but there are the following apps now:

  • Xbox App for Windows: “The Xbox app brings together your friends, games, and accomplishments across Xbox One and Windows 10 devices. Stay connected to the Xbox Live community, see what your friends are playing, share game clips and screenshots, and view achievements across devices. Start party chats, launch into cross-device multiplayer with games like Fable Legends and Gigantic, and stream your favorite games from Xbox One to any Windows 10 PC in your home while using your Xbox One controller.”^
  • The similar Xbox App in the Google Play store and iTunes Apps Store allows access to the Xbox Store, Achievements, Captures, and Messages, and can be used as a remote control for your console menus. It does not support streaming console to device or interact with gameplay. The Xbox Beta App includes the most recent features such as Clubs management/messaging.
  • Forza Hub for Windows (and console) allows you to read News articles and announcements, see alerts for new game events, see your photos and the community Gallery, check some basic game stats and Forza Rewards progress against Friends, and redeem Forza Rewards. Tip: In the absence of this app for Android and iOS you can create a shortcut to these Forzamotorsport.net pages on your device for quick reference.

FH3 FAQ: Pre-Order Bonuses and Methods

FM.net: Pre-Order Announcement.
Xbox Wire: Everything You Need to Know About Xbox Play Anywhere

Is there any price discount benefit for previous game owners or VIPs?
No, there’s no discount for previous game/DLC owners. See the discussion thread.

Do I need to buy two copies in order to play on box Xbox and PC?
No if you buy digital, Yes if you buy disc first. As an Xbox Play Anywhere title, when you buy the game digitally then you own the game for both console and PC. You don’t need to own a console or even have a Windows 10 PC at the time of your purchase to go through this process. Play Anywhere is not available with disc purchases, but you could later buy the digital version and then enjoy the Play Anywhere benefits with your current game save and DLC. See discussion thread and the official Play Anywhere FAQ.

Is FH3 available to purchase from Steam?
No.

How do I purchase FH3 just for PC?
As a Play Anywhere title, purchasing the game digitally buys both the console and PC version together for one price; there is no PC-only link. You don’t need to own a console to obtain the PC benefit. Digital purchase can be made via:

Can I give away my Play Anywhere PC copy or let others use it while I use the Xbox version?
No, the PC version is tied to your account, which can only be logged in one place at one time. See Xbox Support and discussion thread.

Can I buy the game digitally with a gift card instead of a credit card?
Yes. See the Xbox Support page about using Xbox gift cards. This would also be the way to buy the game as a gift for someone else. See the discussion thread. You can confirm your pre-order purchase in your Microsoft Account Order History. Issues with billing and payment should be addressed to Xbox Support, or the retailer who sold the game to you.

I live in [country] - can I buy and play FH3?
“Xbox One may be used in all countries, including the non-launched markets. In addition, Xbox One games are not region locked. Any Xbox One game purchased at retail can be used in any country on any Xbox One. That said, there needs to be a valid payment method corresponding to a supported launch country in order for any transactions to occur over Xbox Live, and some content may not be accessible outside launch markets due to geographic content restrictions imposed by content right holders.”^ See the list of countries/regions where Xbox Live is supported. “Game features that require the Live service are only available in these countries/regions.” See discussion thread.

PRE-ORDER BONUSES

What are the Loyalty Rewards? Will I get cars and credits?
Players can receive up to 12 free cars listed in the Loyalty Rewards announcement. Credits are not included in FH3 Loyalty Rewards (as they were for FM6) - see discussion thread - but gift credits are available from ongoing Forza Rewards. Loyalty Rewards are not related to digital or retailer purchase method, and will be available even if you buy the game after the pre-order period. These car models are not exclusive to Loyalty Rewards; you will be able to obtain the same models through regular gameplay if you haven’t qualified to collect them as gifts.^ Watch the Contest Thread for future opportunities to earn gift cars and credits.

I’ve been playing FH3 - why don’t I have my Loyalty Reward cars?
The Loyalty Reward prompt occurs after some game progression. After you have selected your second Festival Site, return to the Byron Bay festival garage. The prompt is automatic and the cars should be gifted directly to your garage. If you don’t see this prompt after selecting the second festival, try further progression such as entering events and winning Head-to-Head races. If you’re still missing the gift cars, report it in the appropriate Support forum. See discussion thread.

What bonuses are available for pre-ordering from retailers?

  • Digital pre-orders via Xbox include the FH2 Rockstar Energy Car Pack and FM6 Meguiar’s Car Pack.^ See discussion thread.
  • There are six car models with duplicate tuned versions available as bonus DLC from select retailers in the U.S. and elsewhere. See DLC thread for models and retailers and discussion thread for other countries.
  • The Ultimate Edition is available in SteelBook packaging from certain retailers. See discussion thread.
  • Gamestop and its subsidiaries are also including a 1:43 diecast model of the Centenario in FH3 packaging. See discussion thread.
  • EB Games Australia is offering an Australian Tour Edition which includes four of the exclusive pre-order bonus carsplus a Forza-branded t-shirt with the SteelBook Ultimate Edition.
Will I miss out on certain car models if I don’t buy from specific retailers?
No. Preorder cars are tuned versions of cars everyone will have access to as part of regular gameplay.^ See discussion thread.

What’s the best way to get everything?
Buying the Ultimate Edition digitally from the Xbox dashboard or Xbox.com will provide you with the Play Anywhere benefit plus VIP and Car Pass and one pre-order bonus exclusive model. You would have to purchase a copy of the game from each retailer to get a code for each of the pre-order bonus DLC cars along with merchandise additions such as the scale model Centenario and controller sticker. Expansion packs and the Expansion Pass are not included in any version of the game and would need to be purchased separately.

FH3 FAQ: Demo

FM.net: Demo Announcement article - September 12
Store: link

Is there a free downloadable Demo?
The Forza Horizon 3 Demo for Xbox One consoles was announced and released on September 12, 2016. The size is 18GB. “A standalone “Forza Horizon 3” PC demo will be released sometime after launch, so look for more information on that in the future.” ^ See discussion thread.

Included features:
The same opening sequences as the full game, Showcase event, racing events with car options, custom license plate, character/name choice, hire/fire drivatars, Drone Mode, choose festival site (but not travel to it).

Not included:
Progress does not save - the game restarts each time you play it to allow a different car choice. Progress does not carry over to the full game. Access to the Festival Site (Autoshow, Auction House, Livery Editor, customization), Barn Finds, other features.

What about wheel support?
“In addition, we have seen questions regarding wheel support for Forza Horizon 3. Alongside the release of our most recent update for Forza Motorsport 6: Apex, which introduced Windows 10 wheel support, we’ve been working hard to improve steering wheel support and FFB tuning for Forza Horizon 3. Because the game features driving experiences and vehicle types that are not present in the Apex, such as off-road driving in trophy trucks and buggies, this integration work requires additional tuning across the game’s diverse vehicles and terrain. While not found in the Xbox One demo, many of these improvements will be present in the full version of Forza Horizon 3, on PC and Xbox One, when Forza Horizon 3 launches with early access on September 23. In addition, we’ll have support for additional wheels beyond the Apex wheel list that was previously announced. As we’ve said before, wheel support is an ongoing priority for the Forza team and, as we gather your feedback on wheels in both Apex and Forza Horizon 3, we will continue to improve wheel support in future content updates.”^

Store: Treasure Map

Store: VIP Cars & Membership
Store: Car Pass
Store: Expansion Pass

When and how will I receive DLC included with pre-orders?
Retailers may send the pre-order bonus DLC code to you by email or print it on the receipt. Delivery date may be after the game release; ask your retailer directly. For bundles, make sure you don’t have any Ready to Install updates in your Xbox My Games menu.

How do I redeem a DLC code?
With a 25-digit code use https://account.xbox.com/en-US/PaymentAndBilling/RedeemCode If you have a Kinect and a card with a QR code on it, you can say “Hey Cortana, Redeem Code” and hold the pattern in front of the camera to redeem it.

I redeemed a code but the car isn’t in the game?
On your console go to My Games & Apps, press the controller button on the FH3 icon and select Manage Game, then press the controller button on the icon for your DLC item and select Details, and select Install. Pre-order bonus cars may appear in the Autoshow but not your garage, while the Halo Warthog will appear in your garage but not the Autoshow.

If I buy DLC for my Xbox version will I be able to use it with my PC version?
“Yes. Downloadable content that you buy or earn for an Xbox Play Anywhere game that you own will also be playable on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. This includes game add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks.” ^ See discussion thread.

If I purchase DLC for my physical copy, will it be transfer if I later purchase a digital copy?
Yes, per the Play Anywhere benefit referenced above.

What period does the Car Pass cover?
The Car Pass does not include all DLC to ever be released. “The Car Pass brings you six monthly car packs (7 cars each) beginning in October 2016, ending March 2017.”^ The Car Pass cannot be bought a second time for a discount on any DLC after March. There may also be DLC released in coming months that is not included in the Car Pass. See discussion thread.

Will there be expansions like Rally and Storm Island in previous Forza Horizon games?
There will be two expansion packs which can be purchased together in the Expansion Pass for $34.99. “The pass includes two expansions with the first being released this holiday and Ultimate Edition owners will receive a discount of $10 on the Expansion Pass if purchased before the end of 2016. Look for more details on the Expansions coming to Forza Horizon 3 in the future.”^ See discussion thread.

If I purchase the Car Pass after I’ve purchased an included car pack, will I receive a discount?
Unlikely, since Turn 10 has not offered this on previous games and Xbox Live’s purchase terms indicate that sales are final. Unless T10 comments on this, account transactions would be an issue for Xbox Support.

What are the VIP benefits?
“Forza Horizon 3 VIP members receive five exclusive VIP cars, the 2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV, 2016 Koenigsegg Regera, 2015 Ferrari F12tdf, 2015 Ultima Evolution Coupe 1020, and 2015 Ford Falcon GT F 351. VIPs will receive additional benefits, including double Wheelspin earnings, access to exclusive online events, community gifts, and more.”^ The community gifts in the past have been monthly gift cars from the regular game roster with custom liveries. It’s unknown if this is the plan for FH3 and if previously sent gifts would be available to new VIPs at a later date. See discussion thread.

Can the Standard Edition be upgraded after release by purchasing VIP or the Car Pass separately?
Yes. The trade-off to buying separately is a higher overall cost than the bundled edition price. See the discussion thread.

If I buy the VIP or Car Pass or car packs will my friend or family member be able to use it for free?
In previous games the game assets of a DLC pack have been treated differently than the gamesave benefit. On consoles where the DLC owner is a Gold member, other accounts can access cars during their own gameplay without having to pay for the DLC pack. However, other accounts didn’t receive benefits such as the VIP crown icon and access to VIP events and gifts, and pack cars were free to collect for the DLC owner’s gamesave but the other accounts had to pay credits in game to collect the same models. To get full benefits from DLC, other accounts can purchase the DLC via the Xbox.com Store. It’s unclear if DLC sharing works on PCs. See discussion thread.

Will I be able to buy cars from a pack individually?
This is an option that may only be available via the Autoshow. See discussion thread.

Does FH3 have in-app purchases? Are they required to complete the game?
Players can buy a Treasure Map which reveals discovery locations, and a Car Horn Unlock, but these accelerators are not required for full access to those items. Horns can be otherwise unlocked in the Skill Shop through regular gameplay (or Forzathon). Tokens were added on December 17 as a way to buy care or upgrades in lieu of credits; tokens display can be disabled in the Marketplace/Extras menu. Forza games are "built from the beginning, all the way to the end, not to be a microtransaction driven game.”^

Will the pre-order retailer exclusive bonus cars ever be released as a DLC pack for everyone?
Unknown, but unlikely given that this has not happened with the previous Day One and Team Forza edition cars. However these models are duplicates to cars in the regular roster, just with tuning applied, so you won’t miss out on driving those car models if you don’t have the bonus DLC version. See discussion thread.

Can I buy DLC cars from the Auction House?
You will only be able to buy DLC cars from the Auction House if you own the DLC (individually, pack, or if covered by Car Pass). Barn Finds, Horizon Edition, Midnight Battle awards, Loyalty Awards, and Forzathon award cars (Warthog, S14, Ford #17) are not DLC and can be obtained from the Auction House and driven by everyone.

Content updates
In Xbox One Forza games, a mandatory content update has been released on the day of each DLC release to update the game with those models for everyone to see even if they don’t buy the cars. Content updates have also been released intermittently to address game fixes. To check for content updates on PC, open the Windows Store app, click the torso icon in the upper right, click Downloads and Updates, and then Check for Updates. See the Support subforums and DLC and Editions List thread for content update notes.

Is there a companion app for FH3?
There’s no app for accessing in-game features. You can download the following apps now:

FH3 FAQ: Settings - Controller buttons

Can we toggle convertible tops during gameplay?
"No, sorry. Always something we’d like to do with every Forza, including let you open and close convertible tops on demand, but it’s one of those things that hasn’t made the final cut yet … making every single convertible or drop top in the game animate and look right at every level of detail inside and out in all weather conditions - that’s a pretty huge amount of work across a lot of cars. "^

Can we toggle headlights, indicators, wipers, or horn during gameplay?
