These were Prototype Vega’s and fitted with the last of several all-aluminum 283 cu in (4.6 L) V8 Engines used in the CERV I Projects (Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicles)
Bored out to 302 cu in (4.9 L), it had high-compression pistons, “097 Duntov” mechanical camshaft, cast-iron four-barrel intake manifold and a Quadrajet carburetor. With stock Turbo Hydramatic, stock Vega rear end and street tires, the car ran a sub-14 second quarter mile.
Chevrolet Staff engineer, designer, and race car driver Zora Arkus-Duntov started development of the CERV I and later CERV II research and development vehicles.
