FH3 Car Wish List Thread Analysis and Tracking

Earlier this year I posted an analysis of the FM6 Car Wish List thread to see which car models were most commonly requested by the community. I have now done the same for the Forza Horizon 3 Car Wish List thread. I’ve gone through each post and counted how many times each car model was mentioned, and have totaled them up in a spreadsheet. In this thread I’ll list the most requested cars and charts, and update it as cars are revealed before and after FH3 is released in September.

Going through post after post gives some interesting insight and speculation into the interests of the community. The setting for the game naturally affects which cars users have requested. In contrast to the FM6 thread, which understandably included many race car models, the requests in the FH3 thread have been overwhelmingly for production models and off-road vehicles. Surprisingly the FH3 count to date has named far more models than the FM6 thread despite only a fifth the number of posts counted so far. And as cars are revealed in the weekly Forza Garage announcements, future wishlists will no doubt shift as wished-for cars are checked off and maybe new real-world models are announced.

A summary of the numbers as of early August:

  • 550 user posts counted with lists ranging from 1 to over 800 cars, averaging ~15 per user
  • 8,500 named vehicles representing 3,175 make/models
  • Most requested model: BMW i8 mentioned in 1 out of every 13 user lists (7.6% of users, 0.5% of all cars)
  • 485 models represent half of the total car requests
  • The top 200 most requested models, listed in this thread, represent 30% of all cars listed

Methodology and Practical Considerations

Data Collection and Presentation Format

  • ‘All’ cars counted: In the FM6 project I started counting long after the full roster was known and DLC was released. To save time I did not count the cars in wishlists that I knew to exist in the game. In this thread I am including all cars posted, so some will already be checked off because as of this posting about two thirds of the car roster has been revealed. About 5 to 10% of posts in the thread were not valid for counting because they appeared to be comments on someone else’s list rather than posting their own, or suspected spam/repeats, or wishlists that were about body kits more than car models.
  • “Models”: As I learned with the FM6 analysis project, deciding how to present the data and designing an efficient way to reach that goal were the most challenging aspects of this effort. Users can be very specific about the models they’d like to have (“pre-facelift” and specific engine codes) and they can be very vague (“1990’s JDM”). Simply copying and pasting all requests would not have created much of stand-out pattern in the results; even discounting various trim levels, the thousands of models named mean that any one model represents less than one per cent of the field. But condensing cars together can mask some important differences that matter to car fans. In the end, I decided to go by model generation using Wikipedia as a general guide. In the case of commonly requested updated models (the Aventador SV and Huayra BC), I counted them separately from the earlier models, while for less-requested models I condensed variations into one (Ford Bronco).
  • Limited familiarity: This project is educational because I look up every model on Wikipedia and have encountered many cars I never knew existed. But I’m still biased in favor of the cars I like and lack knowledge about other types, such as pickup trucks. I find the naming structure for Australian cars confusing. So if I listed any wrongly in the eyes of their fans, know that there was no insult intended. Feel free to educate me on vehicle differences and I’ll adjust the list appropriately. Keep in mind though that every time a car is split out, it falls that much further in its most requested rank. I encourage users to delve into the long model list and investigate cars they don’t know well; some of the performance options on even commuter models can be surprising (I’m thinking of the Honda City Turbo II).

Wish Fulfillment
When I published the FM6 results, Brian Ekberg commented in the Week in Review: “Having this list doesn’t always mean we’ll always be able to tackle the cars in order of community priority. What it does mean is that we now have a fantastic lens on exactly which cars the community is asking for.” The developers have to overcome a variety of obstacles to add cars to the game:

  • Manufacturers have the last word on whether their cars can be added to the game, and licensing isn’t free and it’s renegotiated for every game even if a car has been in a previous Forza game.
  • Cars are not simply ported from a previous Forza game to the next: the updated ForzaTech engine and new features mean that sound, physics, balance-of-power adjustments, and testing need to be redone for every game.
  • Assuming that T10 is able to get its hands on a good quality vehicle, and the car isn’t so rare that the owner will allow the A/V team to risk it, It takes six months to develop a car for the game. It’s unrealistic to expect a quick ask-and-receive turnaround for any car.
  • Game developers have their own vision for which cars fit their game. Imagine how music artists would feel if fans insisted on selecting the songs for their albums or concert set lists.
  • Even if the developers and manufacturers left it entirely up to player choice, many players insist that their car is the answer to making the game great, not recognizing that there are far more players with other competing ideas insisting the same thing.
  • Some users post wish lists with more cars than have ever appeared in any game. As of August 2016 there have only been just over 1,300 models that have appeared in Forza games over the last ten years (see the FH3 spreadsheet linked at my website ManteoMax.com which has all previous Forza cars listed for comparison). The enthusiasm is understandable - it’s not hard to come up with a list of hundreds of cars. But if users are expecting to influence the count, they should consider that the longer the list, the more it is like saying “I want one of everything.” The longer the list, the less significant each car becomes.
  • With all that in mind, users should keep in mind that the Wish List thread is not a vending machine; don’t be surprised if your requests never materialize. Insisting that one’s own list get special attention because it’s being seemingly ignored is also counter productive. We combine these lists to keep individual threads from pushing other topics of discussion off the forum front page, and also because combining them in one thread helps track user interest.

These are the top 200 most requested cars in the FH3 Car Wishlist as of August 8 (prior to the Week 4 reveal), with the number of users who included them in their lists. See the Confirmed Car List thread and the Forza Garage reveals in the News section for the list of cars known to be in the game. I’ll update the list as more wishlist posts are made and cars are revealed over the coming weeks and months.

I though 599XX/EVO is track only XX series and pretty different from road going car 599 GTO. like FXX and Enzo, FXX-K and Laferrari

If you don’t mind, I took the liberty of filling out a “new” top 20 as of 2/7/17 (or 7/2/17 if you prefer). I removed cars that were added in either in the base game or via DLC.

The cars from the initial top 20 that were removed were: 2015+ Nissan GTR, 2012+ Chevy Camaro, Nissan Skyline R33, Nissan Silvia S14 (only counted Zenki), and the McLaren 570S. While it didn’t make the top 20 at first, I did have to remove the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V as well to get the top 20 before DLC.

Which means that 25% (5/20) of the most requested cars in the wish list were added in at launch, along with the CTS-V (see above).

Removed cars were the: BMW i8, Aston Martin Vulcan, 2016 Acura NSX, 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, 2015 Honda Civic Type-R, Mazda RX-7 FC, Pagani Huayra BC, Ford Crown Victoria, BMW M2, and the Aston Martin DB11. In order to completely finish the current top 20, however, I also had to remove the Koenigsegg Regera, Bentley Bentayga, and the MK3 Toyota Supra DLC cars, as well as the confirmed to be at launch cars Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, Honda EK Civic, 2017 Ford Focus RS, 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, and the 1957 Chevy Bel Air.

Which means that 50% - yes, half, 10/20 - of the most requested cars in the game after launch came as DLC. I did also have to remove nine additional cars to get to a new top 20.

Doing some simple math, with five monthly packs so far at 7 cars each (35 total) and the VIP pack with 5 cars, 13 out of 40 DLC cars would be considered part of the most requested cars in the game. With these 13 cars divided amongst 6 packs, each pack had approximately 2 highly requested cars in it.

Given that we did get:

That is roughly 2 per pack. I’m not counting Blizzard Mountain or the Motorsport All-Stars Car Pack, however I am counting VIP as said.

This is all subject to change of course as we’ve still at least one monthly DLC pack and an expansion to go. Putting it in perspective, if a certain brand from Stuttgart were to be the second expansion, you’d have to remove two more cars from the top 20 list; taking their place would be the '02-'08 Dodge Ram and the 2017 Ferrari GTC4 Lusso. Removing two cars from that list (any two, doesn’t matter) going with the 2 cars per pack theme, you’d be adding in the Mitsubishi Starion and the Chevy B-Body Impala SS to that list, having to remove the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, Nissan R32 Skyline, and BMW E46 M3 from the launch cars and the Porsche 918 from the expansion to get there. Also subject to change because while the list I’ve made is up-to-date, my source material (ManteoMax’s initial list) hasn’t been updated with new tallies in a while.
