Forza 5 - Show your body kit in the design viewer

Hi everyone!

Having trouble showing your aftermarket body kits when you share a design? Here is a write up that might help you.

Intro: (I know, I know… It’s long and boring but I have to put you in context.)
Firstly, I am in no way affiliated with Forza or its team member. I am simply sharing my own experience and therefore making assumptions based on the tests I’ve made. The designs I usually create are matched to the specific vehicle and also for specific body panels’ kits. I always wondered why in the “Recommended Designs” viewer, some designs could have different bumper kits and rims, when the ones I’ve saved and shared stayed stock. For the purpose of this thread, I will assume that within the car design, there are aftermarket body modifications (Ie. Bumpers, Skirts, Hood, Spoiler…)

To see whether your design can be seen or not by the Forza community: (Confirming your doubts)
The only way I was able to see my design correctly, was with different Xbox account. I’ve tried everything possible to be able to see the design in my account, without having any success. Therefore I logged in my brother’s Xbox account, went to buy a car, selected the same car as the one I’ve created the design for and at the “recommended designs” viewer, I’ve searched for my design (Generally you will have to use the search tool). If you find the car stock with your design applied on it, it means everyone will see it that way. If the design appears correctly, everyone will be able to see it correctly. I’ve tried with a second Xbox account (Other than mine) and the same result showed up.

I’ve then realized that you can’t see your own design correctly, you always see them stock. Also, it can only be seen in the “Recommended Design” viewer, not in the “My Design” page. So try using your sibling’s, parent’s, friend’s, boyfriend/girlfriend’s Xbox account or even create yourself a second account since you don’t need Xbox live gold to upload designs from the community.

Showing the design correctly - Starting from scratch (The easiest way)
The first way I’ve been able to continuously show the design correctly (Viewing it from another Xbox profile, as always) was to start fresh with a new car. The first step is to buy and install all the performance items you want (The only one that matters is the one that will modify the appearance of the car: Brakes, Suspension, Rims, Tires, Bumper, Skirt, Hood, Wing…). Once this is done, move to the design part and apply all the decals that you want for the design. Finalize the correct colors and save it. Then move on to paint the car the color you want. Once again, save your progress. Go to “My Designs” and share the work you’ve done!

That way, I was always able to see my design correctly when I used another Xbox account than the account I used to create the design.

Showing the design correctly - From an Inaccurate Design (The patch up)
Assuming that you have your final design, which all parts are installed but they don’t show up. There is another solution. Make sure that all the aftermarket parts that you want to show in your final design are installed and then move to the vinyl/decal editor to edit your design. Modify anything; you can change a decal’s emplacement, its color, you can add some decals, delete some… Anything you want but you need to make a change. When you press back, it will ask you these choices:
-Apply to car
-Save as new design
-Don’t save
-Cancel
Select the “apply to car” option. Go back in the decal editor but now, undo the change you’ve just made. Press back once again and they will ask you the same option as above. Once again, choose “Apply to car”. Once this is done, you can now share your design and confirm that everything is showing correctly with another Xbox account!

***Note: I haven’t tried if making a paint color change would do the same as the decals.

Changing A Design’s Color Under a New Design (The quick mod)
Now, let’s say you want to share the same design you’ve just did, but in a different color. Assuming now that the design was showing correctly on another Xbox live account, paint your car in any color. Press back and then the same list as above appears. Select “save as new design” (As it will use a new design slot). Since it didn’t save on the car, go to “my design” and load the design you’ve just created. Now is the time to change paint color, decals color and any other colors there could be. When you will press back, select “Apply to car”. The only thing left to do is to Share your design and verify that everything is in order!

My theory - How the software seems to think (The sum up)
Finally, to summarize everything up, here are the “rules” in order to see your design correctly:
-Design with bumper kits are only viewable in the “recommended design” section, never in the “my designs” section.
-Designs can only be viewed by other Xbox profiles than the one created it.
-In order to show up correctly, decals has to be the last thing you save before sharing.
-The last save before you want to share HAS TO BE “apply to car” in order to show the body mods.

I hope this write up helped!

If something in this write up is wrong, or its missing information, please let me know and I will add it to my post.

Thank you,
Fred

Thanks this helps a lot ,some designs need all the extras to work.

is my conclusion correct, that you always upload from the "my designs"and never directly from inside the “paint or"äpply vinyl” ?

Good info, but much more complicated than necessary. I’ve always been able to do it in just three steps:

  1. First, upgrade your car with the parts you want and save the setup (you do not need to share the setup.)
  2. Paint your car and save it/share it as normal
  3. To check if your car is showing correctly, simply go to buy the car you just painted from the “Buy Cars” menu and search your keywords used when you shared it, and/or your own gamertag in the “Creator” space. You do not need to use a different account to see it, you just have to make sure to search your own.

before being pointed to this thread I could not figure out how to get the design to show up with upgrades, ie rims, wing, bumper, etc. I did step 3 before seeing this thread with no luck. I then went through the long process of creating a new email, running through the seven tutorial races so I could get to the part where you can purchase a car only to discover you need gold to see community designs. Luckily, I had a one month card from a 360 repair and just used that. Finally got to the car, found my design and no parts showing. Stumped at this point I deleted the designs and started over. Still no luck in either account. Then it hit me, maybe I should save the tuned setup.

Your step 1 that I somehow skipped, I think is the key to making the picture accurate to the design. I don’t know for sure if that’s what did it, but once I shared the design(also shared the setup) it showed up correctly in the picture when I went to purchase the car from the same account that created it. Of course when you buy it, the parts don’t come with it. They really should add an option to purchase the setup at the same. Add with or without.

My theory, you must save your setup, the rest is straightforward as you state.

freakinout1969,
You’re welcome! I’m glad it helped!

BlueReaper,
To upload the design to the community, I’ve never tried anything else but to upload it from the “My Design” tab. The trick I’ve found is to have all the modification “applied to the car” rather than “saving it as a new Design”. The problem I’ve found is that by saving it as a new design, it doesn’t seam to take the body modifiers with it. It seams to think that only the liveries are the design. Therefore I’ve only found successful results by applying it to the car and then upload it from the “my design” tab afterwards.

You could try doing some test though, it might work out for you. It’s possible that my theory is not 100% accurate.

TheFishE77,
I didn’t knew that you could use your own account to see the designs (In the “Buy car” area). To be honest with you, I didn’t tried it since I took for granted that since it wasn’t showing in the “My Design”, it wouldn’t show anywhere else withing my account. It is good to know though…

Fred

Good info here…thanks to all!

outkast6 ACTUAL,

Just a little heads up. This thread is rather old and due to issues stemming from a game update glitch from about a month or so ago … pretty sure that this info doesn’t apply to the current build of the game. Since that update, to my knowledge, no one’s been able to share designs that include either cosmetic body kit parts or rim sizes/styles in the thumbnail preview images. This issue has been reported multiple times by multiple users and I’ve still not seen any response from T10 that they’re working on it or have any kind of fix coming. Just wanted to let you know about this so that you wouldn’t be frustrated trying to go through these steps over and over with no good results.

Good to know. Feels like I spent an hour trying to get a car to show up with the body kits installed before looking for this thread again. Bummer if they broke it. Wish they would fix this or make it easier to see it working. Not sure they will since the game is almost a year old at this point.

wouldn’t the designs be displayed on the car as that car that you have or are going to buy?? with the body kit you have selected…???

I was wondering why my designs always showed up stock, god I wish we had a marketplace, what in the hell was wrong with it?
