Engine Sounds [see post #27]

Supposedly they’re reluctant to make any of these big changes ( window stickers, caliper painting, sound updates ) because the size of the download is gonna be huge and they don’t want to force metered connection users to have to do it. Seems like a weak excuse to me, but I guess I get it.

I’m pretty sure that most of the cars use the same sound, so at least they could improve that 1 sound that they all use, and that would be a small download.

They said in Forza monthly Motorsport is building an entirely new sound engine for FM8, with the goal being noticeable changes to engine noise for whatever way you modify it. Given that the development of both games is intertwined they might be conceding a sound overhaul to whatever the next game is with the new sound engine.

When did they say this? Interested in watching the video. I cant find them saying that anywhere. Cheers.

Sorry mate but I don’t know off the top of my head, it was with the Q&A with Chris Esaki, I think Sept or Oct Forza Monthly where they said Forza Motorsport 8 wanted to take a “built not bought” mentality to how the cars are represented in game. They stated-
-New sound engine so you can hear actual changes to engine noise when you upgrade
-Looking at new customization and updates to Forza aero because they know people want their cars to look cool (my question I submitted)
-They didn’t add new tracks because the track creator was incredibly outdated so the track team spent the FM7 lifecycle building a track creator that would allow them to build tracks much quicker and have more dynamic environments (hopefully this means night/weather for all tracks)
-Massive updates to the physics engine

That’s the jist of it, honestly I’m grateful they are taking a year off, it’ll benefit both Horizon and Motorsport to have all that extra dev time to build a better, more comprehensive game instead of just dumping stuff onto more stuff.

I got faith in T10. Have you heard the last big sound update they did to FM7? They did a great job on all of those. I just wish they’d stop separating Horizon from Motorsport so much in that regard. Why make the 2 sound totally different? Makes no sense. It kinda happened in FH4, but they missed the mark considerably when it comes to stereo imaging and dynamic range. FM7 is tolerable, but FH4 most definitely is not in most cases.

I play primarily in cockpit view btw so I’m judging that. Couldn’t possibly care less about chase cams.

First, let me just quickly add to what the guy you quoted said; yes, I think it is an excuse. A few GBs more to improve car sounds is something everyone can enjoy. The ones with a slower connection will simply have to wait a little longer - not the end of the world.

Now, over to you! I don’t have much faith in their sound engine because they progressively made things worse going from FM5 to 6 to 7. Same with FH2 to 3 to 4. There were minor improvements here and there, but the overall sound engine always seemed to suffer and take steps back in terms of quality and realism.

You can bet they will use the new console’s hardware to milk out more graphics and effects - and once again, we’ll be seeing never ending threads on physics and sound discussions. They could have improved the sounds dramatically going from X360 Forza to X-One Forza - the improvement was somewhat desirable, going from FM4 to 5, but only in small increments.

I wish racing game developers would smell the coffee and realize that sound is a HUGE component of the overall experience, especially as more and more people are now upgrading to amps and speakers for the best experience. The One-X is fully capable of reproducing real life-like car sound in a racing game on a 1:1 basis, complete with many variations in wind noise and road noise effects, reverb, changes after upgrades and mods - all that stuff. But we’re still waiting to see that in a Forza game.

In my humble opinion, T10 like to hype up their products a lot, make tall claims, but in the end it falls short. They could prove me wrong though, and I hope they do. But I’m just not expecting to see any major improvements in car sounds, especially with the way they have handled all car sound related issues in FM7 and FH4.

I still appreciated the April 2019 update for Forza 7 though - those cars sound much better and closer to their real-life versions than what they did previously. Unfortunately, they didn’t do much to address any of the other car sound issues which I don’t really care to get into, as they are well-documented on the forum.

Edit - Well, lookie here, look what I found:

This is how passionate the team used to be about nailing varied and accurate sounds for each car.

The entirety of the new Renaults all sound exactly the same. Blatant display of sound copy pasta. Same sound that the Mercedes A45 has. Same that several 4 banger cars have. Gross.

Can you fixed the Megane RS 2018 Sound please? You did an awful Job with it, none from the famous Sound parts are included on the Car in Forza

I hope they don’t make the same mistakes this time around - i.e. dumping most of the console’s power into graphics, graphics and more graphics or a ridiculous amount of content that no one asks for or even has any intention of using.

I think the sound and physics really need to be on par with the game’s beautiful visuals.

And the driving experience… the core of a driving game.

Casual gamers and non-car people wont care and dont care about car sounds, and they are the buyer majority, allowing PG to lazy out on the sounds, FH5 will be no better as long as those people will keep buying it, with each game the franchise got more popular and with each game the quality goes down because casual gamers and normies probably never even touched an engine and dont care about the important things about car games

How?..

People who’d be interested in stuff like the Eliminator, for instance.

Doesn’t make much sense as even in the Eliminator it’s still about cars…

It is but its not what real car guys wanted, eliminator was made purely to include a trendy gamemode that would attract people clueless about cars, its evident that PG lack actual car people (hencs the sounds) while Turn10 are which us evident how more “adult” motorsport feels (not talking about physics) and that they actually made effort in fixing sounds, i love the FM7s ice charger and FF8 hot rods sounds, especially inside its AMAZING and i love to drive them, thats how V8s should sound in FH4

After trying a few rounds of The Eliminator I’m completely clueless on what this mode was about… I failed to understand the core mechanism of the game mode, I mean: what makes people want to play it?

Even if such things did somehow attract people to play, if they lack of the passion for cars… they’ll eventually quit as there’s nothing else to see.

Is flying some strange objects bashing against each other what the major audience of the game really want?.. That won’t explain the bad reception of the Lego Expansion.

The Eliminator has been under-rated in old posts, but the new posts are showing signs that it is addictive once you play it a few times. I can play 10 games in a row easily, and currently I’m still trying to win without challenging anybody which is hard.

It has addictive qualities like…

1/ Finding cars above 4 rank.
2/ Winning challenges with lower ranked cars.
3/ Hiding, and dodging
4/ Tactics
5/ The Final round Elimination

But what’s the essence of all those?.. I mean: what experience do you expect?

For some reason the cars in Forza Motorsport have always felt much more raw than in Horizon. It doesn’t help that in Horizon the car sounds are muffled by the radio music most of the time.

In FH4 it’s worse since turning off radio does not completely shut down the game’s music as it should. So it’s pointless to turn the radio off.

It also seems to me that cars using the new granular synth method are a fair bit louder than the others, which I like, but also creates inconsistencies.
