Yes, and to do most of the other activities as well. I recommend going for the full year of XBOX Live Gold. It’s the best deal in the long run and gives you several free games over the course of a year.

Goto Bing that is Microsoft’s search engine. Sign up for the Bing rewards program. You can redeem the rewards points for Xbox live gold memberships or gift cards or other things. I saved up enough points for free games (this one ), dlc and free live gold member ships. I almost have enough saved up already for my third Live gold yearly membership in a row. So I have saved a ton of money since the rewards program started.

RIGHT ANSWER: NO!!!
You don’t need Xbox live gold for the Auction House. My gold membership expired 1½ year ago and I can use the Auction House.
You need an internet connection but no Gold account. If I’m not wrong, Gold is only required for Multiplayer Leagues & Hoppers
