Disappointing Career Mode, Again

I was super excited for this to come out as the idea of a Builders Cup was phenomanol. Finally something more like a true career.

In the end I feel like this is the same thing its always been. Just of bunch of 5 race mini cups that force you into certain car type. My excitement came from the marketing saying you’ll master 3 or 4 cars. But I already own half a dozen and I’ve barely scratched the surface. So much for mastering a handful of cars.

This “Builders Cup” is legacy FM with two changes.

  1. You don’t get a random super car for finishing a race with a Miate
  2. You can’t use your money to upgrade cars you buy as soon as you get them

Number 1 is a great change. I got tired of having quarter million dollar cars awarded for zero effort.
Number 2 is great, in theory, but it turns the game into a grind because you aren’t leveling up your three or four cars. You’re leveling up every single car just to get through each mini cup. In short, false advertising. Gran Turismo fooled us this year too with their ‘return to the basics’ stuff with the license system that was nothing like the original GT’s.

I miss and WANT so badly to do a real career mode. Let me buy a car, race in a class, earn points and money and move up to the next class over the course of 10, 12, heck, 20 races. If I don’t make it in the top three at the end of that so I do it again. Maybe I need a better setup, or a different car for my driving style.

This is more of the same with a spit polish to ‘change’ it ultimately ending in something nobody wanted from what I can see. And most certainly not what I wanted or expected from the marketing. Great job Turn10 and Xbox for fooling us. Glad to know our developers are lying to us as much as the politicians these days.

Agreed, and i’d like to add alow LONGER races! I mean, pit crews matter to a race, i never have to pit in this game. Imagine not only upgrading your car, but also your pit crew in a career… Right now, there is absolutely no career in “career mode.”

I didn’t even think about pit crews. Definitely add a fun dynamic.

There is so much that is missing, that should be included in a real attempt at career mode. Things both of us probably haven’t thought about, that other gamers would have.

my biggest issue with career mode is the progression.

what i imagined when they first announced it was you would start with a low class junker, then over time unlock the ability to select better and better cars until eventually you get into race cars and everything they stand for.

instead we start with junkers, get to class A, then go back to junkers again way too many times. It just feels random with no sense of planning or purpose behind it.

once i finished the 5 tours i ignore it, now i just do free play or rivals.

Thank you. My thoughts exactly. They made such a fuss about the “new” career ahead of the launch that I was really looking forward to it. I have to say though, I became skeptical months ago when they introduced the career mode (I think that was in a Forza Monthly or even an Extra Showcase). It looked (too) familiar for a “new” career mode. But the final product disappointed me even more than I thought. And for the reasons you mentioned. On top of that, there are no events for race cars in the career at all.

they clearly didn’t have time to make a career mode. All of the marketing talking points about career were lies because they hacked this career mode together in the last couple of weeks before release build.

Literally it’s the laziest excuse for a single player career I’ve ever seen and that’s a year where COD sank to a new low of laziness and cash-grabbery.

I’ve played about 50 hours, only career mode. I have the Premium Edition. You want to know how many cars I have?

47!

Usually I had much more by now. And I have to buy everything myself! What the heck happened with FM8 single player mode??

A proper Endurance Cup has been missing for years, it was one of my favourite parts of the early FMs. I still remember, nay have nightmares about the FM1 '66 Le Mans challenge at Laguna Seca where you had to beat M.Rossi in their Ferrari P3 with your lead-sled GT40 (without Rewind too) just to unlock it.

All what the new FM(23) did is wrong. Why? My only reasonable solution is that all the devs are interns :man_shrugging:

The last “big” career was in FM4. A huge event calendar with hundreds of races. This was so amazing…
Also why does every developer try to reinvent the wheel?
Why the heck you need to level up every car? It absolute senseless because every part you unlock is at the exact same point on each car. What sense has this?
Why they dont use the old and only good solution with the PLAYER level? If you reach a higher PLAYER level you unlock better cars and tracks/races. Is that this hard?

Maybe a car level system but for unlocking car brand discounts for new cars and upgrades like in FM4. There was everything so clear and easy…

Im at a point where i hope that this FM(23) was such a big incision into Turn 10 reputation that they this Forza Motorsport was the last one from this series. It is already the same like with need for speed. It gets even more down the hill without any comeback. Its a shame but I have absolutely no pity for this!

And yes. GT7 looks beside this game here like a diamond also if it has not much singleplayer career content.
