Challenger Nitpick

A tiny, relatively insignificant detail on the 2015 Dodge Challenger bugs me. Between 2008 and 2010, the door handles on the Dodge Challenger looked like this, however they were changed in 2011 to this. Despite the change, the 2015 Dodge Challenger in the Fast and Furious Car Pack continues to use the old door handles. The same is said for the 2015 Challenger Hellcat in Forza 6. As you can see from this image of the real 2015 Hellcat, it should have the new door handles. Like I said, it’s not a super important detail, but it just seems like these kinds of details should be recognized, especially if they want to advertise how detailed their in-game cars are.

One of my favorite cars. I’m so happy to be getting the Hell Cat because the back looks so much better than the 2012 model.

I totally agree with you, however it’s not a huge problem and one than 99 times out of 100, I’ll never notice.

The door handles aren’t super important for a virtual car. I am very certain not very many people will notice.

Aren’t the cars meant to be laser scanned or something?

They are. That also means if certain parts are different on that exact car, those differences will be reflected in-game.

The fast and furious cars are all hand fabricated and chopped meaning the shop universal studios used may have used older parts

The Furious 7 Challenger has the updated handles. See here.

Maybe they copied and paste a door who knows lol

If they are going to talk about how the cars are laser scanned, then I expect to have the correct parts on cars. I don’t think any Hellcat has those old handles so I’m confused at why they’re not correct.

Car are not laser scanned, since when?

What T10 has done is re-used the basic 2009 Challenger 3D model that debuted in FM3, and updated it with 2015 front and rear styling. The door handles got lost in the shuffle. There are other clues that it’s the same old model, such as the huge gas tank under the rear bumper that all previous Forza Challengers have, but doesn’t exist in real life.

only a handful of cars were laser scanned.

Bugatti Veyron is about the most accurate car model you will find in Forza, simply because it WAS laser scanned. I would doubt that any other Off-One like the SS has been laser scanned, but instead a modified version of the Veyron.

If it were a simple process like, driving the car into a car wash, and the 3d Model was made in minutes, I would expect ALL the cars to be laser scanned, and have the interiors be the main concern for hand modeling.

At this point, there seems to be no existing car laser scanner, though there is a business model that would support one. Anything smaller than a car could then be laser scanned as well.

The kinect raises this point, as it has been used to create 3d models, though they are extremely crude, the technology and software needed to render a TRUE 3D model, are a few high quality infrared cameras, and some sort of reference software to find the distance from the camera to plot the information accurately.

Topography systems have been used to “LASER SCAN” the tracks, mainly due to their size. This technology has been around for nearly 15 years. I used it on construction sites to accurately map elevations, and scale for the developers. I simply drove a quad back and forth across the job site for hours… it logged everything, and we dump the info back into a mapping software.

I did something similar in a independent study to map fire ponds on Lakehurst Naval base, though back then we used a pen and paper, along with a long tape measure, and an elevation stick, and waders.

The ability to laser scan all cars does exist, but at the current time, the cost and timeliness of it, is not in the cards for a video game.

Now if only the Veyron was actually quad-turbo in game instead of twin-turbo… Or did they fix that in FM5 or FH2?

Even if all the cars were laser scanned (which may or may not be the case, but it’s possible for sure, as if you want accuracy it’s actually often cheaper than taking 3000 photos), you don’t use the actual laser scan as a final model. You use the point cloud as a very accurate building reference for when you build the model. The same goes for face scans in games such as RYSE or CoD. You cannot really use the laser scan mesh directly as it’s full of mistakes and bad use of polygon density.

And to your point about the Veyron:

Sure it was scanned, but it was also an A piece of content, marketed hard with the game (just like the M5, the R8 etc.). Not all cars will get similar TLC. Depending on the importance it will be built either at T10 or at an outsourcing content creation company. So the importance of the asset has more to do with the quality of the Veyron - not that it was scanned. this on the mulsanne?

I mentioned this in another thread lol but unfortunately theres inaccuracies with so many cars which are unlikely to be fixed.

There was this video explaining how they got the exterior base models for the game. Forza Motorsport 6 - How they Add Cars to the Game - YouTube

God, I would hate to have their job… What sucks is that they do put a heck of a lot of effort into this stuff, but the cars still aren’t perfect. They’re 99% perfect, but there’s still that pesky 1%…

I think discrepancies such as this one aren’t so easily altered as it surely is time consuming to model the cars, so it’s unlikely to be fixed
