Budget tuning challenge

After reading up on the rules for races like 24 hours of lemons with strict limits on how much the overall cost of the vehicle can be, I was inspired to attempt something roughly along the same lines in Forza.

The challenge is to build the fastest car where the autoshow cost plus all tuning parts is below a credit limit. That’s the only restrictions.

For now, I’m limiting this challenge to road races with a credit limit of 50,000. I’m choosing 50,000 since it’s a nice number that gives acces to a reasonable number of vehicles, and allows for enough budget room to potentially do an engine swap/widebody kit on cheaper vehicles.

Vehicles will be judged by best lap time on the Astmoor Heritage circuit.

To enter, simply list which vehicle was used, it’s cost breakdown (autoshow value + parts) and a share code for the tune being entered.

Looking forwards to seeing which tunes come out of this and any feedback on how to make this challenge better is welcome.

Basically idea is great, but IMO there is no way for this to work. If you do this with your friends and than join one session and race each other - like youtuber Failrace do - it would be ok, but here it will be hard to compare(?) results. Nonethless I would like to try it

Do we have only one entry? → I would say one event, one car, one go
How many laps can we do? → my vote goes for 5 laps max

Car: Honda CRX '91 (20k in autoshow)
Tune (30k in parts):
Race manifold+fuel+ignition+exhaust+engine block
Street brakes, sport suspension, race ARB F/R, race weight reduction
Sport gearbox, race LSD
Sport tires, 215 F/195 B
Tune share code: 178 471 700
Time: 1:07:359 - did 5 laps in rivals A class

First try:
Vauxhall VX220 Turbo '04 - 20.000 cr
Parts 29.950 cr
Tune 418 085 005 - S1 class
Time 1:02:965

@ziperrPL Feel free to submit multiple entries if you want, although only your best one will be counted.

Anyways, here’s my entry for now (unfortunately not quite as fast as the vauxhall)

1997 Mitsubishi GTO - 20K credits
Parts - 30K
Tune - 125 873 155
Time - 1:03:765

Thanks for a fun idea!

My first entry is the 2005 Vauxhall Monaro

Car: $25k
Parts: $25k
Astmoor Lap: 59:7

Share Code: 316 043 587

Why I didn’t think about it that car with higher starting PI will be faster.
Do we have any PI restriction? I think we should have one. Not by class, but e.g. PI764. Not this time, but in next event.

And I still think that best way to compare what we have built would be multiplayer race.
Gamer1000K - on which continent You live?

For what it’s worth, and I’m not at all looking to change up your event, I’ve been a part of many tuning comps from FM4 through to now. The way we used to run them, and it’s been a while since anyone has held one, is to have either a dedicated driver/host of said comp. They drive a set number of laps on a set course with each entered car. Best average time wins. Usually along with a little feedback about the tune.

Or there would be a couple, agreed upon, impartial drivers that would again, run a set of laps with each car, best average wins. It very much becomes important that everyone agreed to the drivers, rules, all those things at the beginning to avoid drama. We had a really good group! Later today, I could throw a link or 2 on here for some of the old comps for an example.

I love the tuning comps because I am not all that fast at driving but I’ve done really well in the past with these comps, (other folks doing my driving, lol).

Anyway, that’s how we did it back in the day instead of having to get everybody in a multiplayer lobby which is uber tricky. That’s would end up being alot more about driving skill than tuning. Same driver using all the cars gives a much better view of the “tune”.

Gave it a try:

Vauxhall Monaro 25k
Upgrades 25k
Lap time 58.859
Code 167 522 404

Could be a fun challenge with a little more clear settings.
Zepp’s idea also sounds neat.

Thanks to everyone for the entries and feedback. This is the first time I’ve tried to put up a tuning challenge and I’m open to changing things to make a better overall challenge structure.

So in the interest of improving things, I have a few questions for you guys:

  1. Are you happy with the 50k credit limit? Does it need to be increased/reduced?
  2. Should some tunable parts (suspension, diffs, roll bars, etc) be exempted from the budget to increase the number of viable cars?
  3. What test track(s) should be used?
  4. Does anyone want to volunteer to help test tunes? I like the idea of removing driver skill by using the same driver for all tunes, but I’m not sure I have the time myself to keep up with all the entries.
  5. Do we want to have multiple categories (dirt, drag, different budgets, etc)?

Thanks!

Wait, so it is more tuning, than driving challenge? Then I’m in wrong part of the town :stuck_out_tongue:

However, I can/could be on testing team and since I’m on keyboard we can check universality of tunes (e.g. Rayne’s tunes always feel to understeery for my liking, but are very good).

My suggestion for this would be only, as I mentioned it earlier, to set random max PI.

I’m a fan of picking a class to be the #1 factor. Then after that, start narrowing it down for what you are looking for. Like have an “A class Rods and Customs, RWD only, such and such a track”. 50k budget, no engine swaps, basically whatever you want. The more specific, the less drama or folk looking to push the rules. It happens unfortunately.

There always seemed to be 1 or 2 cars that were way over powered. In those cases we usually excluded that car. That was part of the prep work. Which is another aspect of a good tuning comp.

A good tuning comp will take a long time to complete. Usually a week or so for sign ups, another 2 weeks for building and tuning, then the actual test driving each car takes a good chunk of time. So you’re realistically looking at a month at least per comp. Seems like alot but it flies by. Especially for people that only have a little bit of time here and there.

I absolutely love the tuning comps. I also really enjoy the HLCs but those get repetitive and I’m not very good at it, lol! Tuning comos are where I learned the most about tuning. I lucked out and was with a great group like I said, most of the HLR guys that are running their Forza staple Hot Lap Challenges. This is another great group, it would be really cool to get these going again.

I’m not fast enough to really be much of a test driver, but depending on what you guys come up with maybe I can paint some cars for prizes or something. I don’t know, but down for whatever.

I know what I’m thinking of would be pretty much all about tuning however… drivers, impartial, competitive drivers. Stigs basically. Drive every car as hard as they can be pushed, get the most out of each tune are a huge part of it.

Here is a hypothetical. This isn’t official, I don’t have the time to run a comp, but here’s a scenario,

A Class Classic Muscle
on
Edinburgh City Sprint

  • No Dodge Dart, (usually very OP)
  • No drivetrain swap
  • You could throw down an arbitrary PI index, but it doesn’t change a whole lot to just max out the class. Again, personal preference.

Open to first 10, 15 or whatever tuners. Entries closed once full or at deadline, tunes due a week later.

Test driver or drivers get to work, drive each car a set number of laps or heats, picks winner. Give feedback if ya want.

A huge aspect to keep in mind is wheel.vs controller. Maybe have a wheel driver AND a controller driver.

Again, I’m not trying to say how to do whatever you all want to do. That’s just how we did it in the good ol’ days, always seemed to work well.

The only other “tuning” type thing I’ve seen, and enjoyed, was Greek Sniper had a thread where folks would post a tune, any car, any class, and he would take it through the paces on Bathurst then give a comprehensive review of the car. He was an incredible driver!! He ran that for a long time on FM6.

Well I sure as heck wasn’t trying to kill this thread. Only trying to share my experiences with hosting and participating in tuning challenges.

Like you guys have seemed to run into on the other thread with rivals, it starts to become really hard to find tracks, cars, rules, anything just doing rivals. For me, the tuning comps make each car much more personal, tweaking and adjusting every little thing. Makes it feel alot more like you’re building a car for an actual race weekend. Rivals is starting g to become too plug and play. Cars I don’t care for that all kinda feel stale. Nothing personal to it. Maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, it would be awesome to start getting some of these going again. Granted I dont think a whole lot you guys where around for much of them in the past.

Again, didn’t want to stop momentum of this thread, I was getting excited!!

Alrighty then.

@xDeaDxZeppLiNx you didn’t kill the thread, my work schedule did (essential industry that won’t be shut down by the pandemic). Feel free to keep the momentum going, I’m sure with lots of people at home there could be plenty of interest.
