I am fairly new to the design editor, did one or two symbols in FH3 but never made a complete livery out of it. To share, discuss and getting critical feedback, I’ll post what I made so far and will continue to do so. I have some experience in making Logos with simple layered symbols from the game All Points Bulletin that came out in 2011, but it is quite different, because we can use like 50 times the layers in FH4 compared to APB. That is 2 sided thing because you have far more opportunities with more or less endless layers, but you also have to put a lot more detail into it instead of optimizing it. Still learning a lot but I think I am slowly getting it. Hope you like it. Feedback and helpful hints appreciated.
Better Version with more contrast through the second color: “Foxtrott GTI BLU”
Livery: “918 Goliath B&W”
Car: Porsche 918 Spyder
Livery: “Wasteland Runner”
Car: Shelby GT 500
Next thing in line will be a drft livery, but maybe I’ll save it for later because I’m in fear of all the layers and complexity for that kind of stuff. ^^
PS: This forum is really hard to use when you can’t answer because you are moderated and have to wait hours to see the actual post you made. For how many weeks more do I have to live with that?
The moderation thing, well it’s no set time as far as I know. More about what you post and how you conduct yourself. So as long as you post in a way that contributes positively to the community, avoid bad language and don’t behave in a way that will set off alarm bells for the moderation team - you should be good in no time.
As for your designs, very nice stuff in here! The Fox graphic on the side of the VW is very nicely done indeed, I dig the layout of the Porsche decals and the GT500 nails the look your going for. Great job giving it the weathered look, I like 'em all so far but that one is especially good. Keep up the good work! Hope to see more out of you.
Thanks for the nice words guys. Have been browsing through all the stuff here in the last days and I am kinda overwhelmed what people do in this game. I won’t compete with that but still want to put some nice colors on my cars. I plan on making a drift car, which is a challenge for me because drift cars are often very colorful and something to show off. I didn’t want to do all the stickers and company logos other people have done hundreds of times, so I came up with another idea that leaves me in my fantasy genre and doesn’t make me compete with all the photorealistic stuff you people do. First of all, I came up with a name and a theme for my driftcar and because I am working still so slow in the editor, these stickers did cost me 3 evenings, but I’m getting faster. Next thing in line is the actual character that is shown on the sides of the car, the “Driftin Droid”. Some nerds probably can spot the theme on the company logos I made for the car. Some were “existent” and I reproduced them by eye while saving layers, some don’t have official logos and I created them myself.
My current progress on company stickers and similar. Critics appreciated.
Idea behind this thing was: What would happen when the Star Wars Universe had to build a car to take part in Formula Drift?
I love that in Bold I think every body does that in some way or another. I imagine office workers rebuilding a second hand race car and taking it to the track, or someone who moved halfway around the world and still wants to drive a car from their homecountry.
But a StarWars drift droid is very out of the box, looking forward to this.
Dang, I’m really digging your designs. And that question, is a tough one the one in your last post on the bottom, I wouldn’t know how to answer it. And by the way, if you are spending that much time in the editor you’re doing something right! So keep up the excellent work.
Outlining of the Droid finished. Took me 2 evenings. I eyeballed a bb-8 concept art from the movie droid and spotted one with a “tire”. Copied that by eye and added a handbrake lever and a discbrake for drifting performance. ^^ Had to do several parts multiple times, missing the experience which shapes can be bent and stretched the right way. Will look better when shaded, I hope. Lots of lessions learned anyway.
Your wip looks very good so far & im sure it will really come to life as you fill it in. What I really like is how you’ve gone about the process of not only creating your own logos but also researching an image & then adding to it - that’s really creative and will ensure you will have an original design in the end. On the logos I’d say the custom fonts you’ve used for “inc”, “Bespin” & “Drive Yards” don’t work with what you have, I often use DaFont when I need to find something that will compliment a specific design… can’t hurt to give it a look?
Hey man, that Fox is amazing! Awesome design and colours. I am not normally the one that says recommends making your own logos, and I do see your latest WIP logo set…but that Fox is so damn nice its screaming for a fitting set of logos and you clearly have the skills and eye!
There is a classic Forza paint that I know the guys above ^^^ will remember too, I don’t remember the garage but it was of a Wolf with a very similar layout to your Fox but on a 22B. This is one of my all time favourite Forza paints and was one of the rare LE I would actually bid on in the auction house back in the day. Thats how good I think your paint is.
None the less, I have downloaded both colour variants and applied them to a pair of my own GTIs I had built up and just haven’t gotten to.
As to the Mustang, lol I had a file name I made as Wasteland as well for the same car going for the same look. I need not go any further than your hub instead. GG
That looks awesome! Pure and simple, the droid outline looks amazing, I can’t wait to see the shading. Don’t say you can’t compete my dude, your liveries are awesome and that Fox is out of this world. I wish more people had your attitude than the reverse, normally people are all too eager to claim how great they are and produce stuff that is meh at best. You are too humble. Awesome work.
As for the idea, I have got to be honest with you my man. What you are doing is actually HARDER than what I do. At least in my opinion. I am essentially like an artist who repaints others paintings to make them for the masses, you are like an original artist! The creativity it takes to make enough fictional brands to fill up a Formula D car is just insane! Really awesome stuff and I can’t wait to see how this project shapes up. Don’t sell yourself short Bot. Your an artist!
Thank you very much for your nice words. I reworked most sponsor stickers, shaded the droid (a bit sloppy but that whole car took more of my time last week than my job. ^^) and have chosen a car. Layout is finished, I went for a two tone and it’s close to the end. Some details will get a rework, I recognized some details while running a goliath lap for not-so-snowy-photos, the scar on the rear bumper is still a placeholder and I’m unsure if I should go and try to do some of the awesome fake-intake-things for the hood, like Jfiler or Ace did to their cars. Maybe that is too much? Not “drifty” enough? Opinions and hints appreciated.
Added a shot of the remade and new Vinyl groups for better criticism. The p from the Swoop-logo is already recognized as mistake and will be a better fitting “p” soon. Special thanks for the “DaFonts” link, helped me finding 1 -2 quadratic fonts which can be relatively easy recreated with the help of a frame shape, like the one I used for the Repulsor sticker. Helps turning a random word into a brand. Invested some time to redo the stickers. because even fantasy corporations put some effort in their sponsor stickers. Still didn’t use custom letters for everything because lazyness and too much effort for something you won’t see on the car. Not sure how many logos should go on a Driftcar, if you think it should be more, I have some in reserve which didn’t get a place yet.
Sounds like someone who’s really got the paint bug! Honestly, “sloppy” wasn’t my first thought when I saw the Droid - it looks good to me.
No probs, DaFont’s great isn’t it? Been using it since FM2 days but quickly learned to make a note of ‘possibles’ when searching because I wasted a lot of time looking back for something I’d seen earlier, LoL! Logo wise, what you’ve got now looks much better - you don’t necessarily need to use custom fonts for everything, the stock fonts you’ve chosen suit just fine. I’m no expert on Drift designs but I think it’s cool because it’s original.
Excellent work on all you’re pieces. I’m especially liking you’re Drift Droid logo really out of the box with that one! Keep it up Bot. As everyone has stated your pieces are amazing! And certainly ‘Drifty enough’ lol.
Awesome job Bot! That S14 is looking killer. Great job with the base too, the layering of the greens is very well done and adds some nice contrast. Keep up the good work, that is a killer livery!
Experimented with vents and intakes for a while but decided to let the hood straight and clean. Will make a serious attempt for another project and don’t want to overload this one. Thank you all for the input and the help finishing this one. I’ve put it in the weekly livery contest to see if devs like it too. Was a funny project. Let’s see what’s next. But for now, I’ll enjoy the winter rally season.
Fixed P and the “Drifters stitch” on the shot below. Will touch it one more time the day the two-tone rims are out.
My next project will be a BMW E36 Widebody Livery. I started this project to learn how to do some of the Fake3D Objects and some more realistic things to be able to combine all techniques one day in the future. Also I learned from another thread here in the paint booth, that you can take off plates to do your own.
My first attempt on a German number plate (German car) and the first hood vent I didn’t delete after I finished. ^^ Plate will get a frame too, just stuck it on to see. Eurostars do vanish in parts, will try to make them 1 px larger. Also, Number 1010 is for laziness and I also didn’t to waste too many layers on a license plate. But is maybe a thing I’ll change in the future. The Upper badge on the plate is more or less accurate, the lower one is an 8 layer fake that shows usually a federate sign, but it is very tiny, may change too.
If things don’t look right for you, I appreciate every critic or hint from the pro painters in here. The work with gradients is harder than with solid objects.
Livery itself is just the start of a sketch, don’t look at it.
