So I’m installing the demo rn, it said it was 28gb when starting the download. Now its downloaded 40gb and it just keeps going.
What the heck?

Same here, currently at 50Gb downloaded!
It’s a bug with the horrible windows store. Happened to me with sea of thieves and I said forget it and gave up.
You can try reinstalling the windows store. Be really careful with powershell if you go that route.
General Store troubleshooting
It may not be just one thing. There are multiple causes. There are lots of windows troubleshooting websites out there. You get tons of hits if you google these kinds of issues. It’s hard to find the answer through all that and can take some perseverance. There is every chance what I posted will not work for you at all.
It is unfortunate that the Windows Store is so prone to issues. It’s a mess.

I just stopped the installation and after a minute or two Play button showed up and game works fine.

Now that’s a riot!
This is a known issue with the Microsoft Store. Please try pausing the download or typing WSRESET in the start menu and running that.

I have the same problem. I’ve tried use WSREST.exe. Stopping the download, restarting it…
It shouldn’t be this difficult to download a demo. Please help I was going to buy this game but as it is now I won’t be. I’ve also tried resetting my windows and doing a fresh install.

This problem has existed since Horizon 3 release when they first started putting Forza games in the MS Store (ignoring Apex). So good luck with that

Installing it on my B: drive but it’s currently at 50gb of 62.
I also get the feeling that it’s slowly filling up my C: drive. I used to have 80gb of free space, now barely 60.

I recently had the same issue, and I looked for hours in google, youtube and everywhere to find an answer to that issue and then i found this website: https://windowsreport.com/fix-windows-store-app-download-stuck/
In this website there are 7 methods on how to fix this issue for me personally the last method worked and he it is:
Solution 7 – Restart Windows update services
Finally, if none of the previously recommended solutions got you going, there’s still one final solution. This is a usual workaround used in Windows Update issues. Since this problem might as well be closely related to updating features, it should help you address the downloading problem, too.
Follow the instructions below and you should be able to resolve your problem:
Type services.msc in the Search Bar and open Services.
Navigate to the Windows Update service, right-click on it and click Stop.windows store app download stuck
Now, navigate to C:Windows and locate SoftwareDistribution folder.
Right-click on it and rename it to SoftwareDistributionOLD or any other name.
Now, get back to Services and start the Windows Update service again.
Get back to the Store and look for changes.

This method has unstuck mine for the moment. It was all the way up to almost 300 gb. I had to restart the app twice after renaming the folder and it finally snapped back to 64.10 gb. Thanks. Crossing my fingers.

- and now download blocked.
