Gran Turismo 7 features “Invitational” cars, which can be obtained through Daily Roulette rewards (basically wheelspins) and it gives you the option to buy a previously unobtainable car. This would apply to expensive, limited-production cars. Not to mention it’s a real thing manufacturers do, which I’m always up for PGG adding certain “realistic” features that don’t compromise the arcade gameplay.
However, I do think with some tweaking, this feature would work really well in a Forza Horizon title:
Instead of randomly getting invitations out of wheelspins, you must do long-term challenges in the manufacturer’s cars to unlock the option to buy an invitational car, and they never expire. Forza Horizon is way too easy and this would add some much needed progression.
For example, instead of being able to purchase a LaFerrari out from the get-go, you must:
Drive a collective 2,500 miles in Ferrari vehicles
Win 10 races in Ferrari vehicles
Accumulate 200,000 skill score in any Ferrari
Once these requirements are met, you are free to purchase your LaFerrari.

I agree, some sort of “invitation challenge” would fit nicely in fh5, it would improve the overall experience, add progression, and it could be met wiht some new and good features, just imagine, some horizon story chapters driven type of challenge: in order to get an important/exclusive and memorable car from a manufacturer, youd need to do some challenges as you said, but more story driven, you do 3 different challenges with 3 different cars from the same manufacturer, representing their story or their most important events.
Or, you do the events that you mentioned, but while you are doing them, the devs could add a description of the story of the manufacturer, that way, gamers would connect with the brand and knowing some fun facts, just like forza horizon 3 did with the forza vista.
(but I gotta admit, this feels too complicated)
Another thing that could be met with this invitation feature is to get access (through these invitations) to exclusive cars from previous updates (seasonal rewards), that way, it would delete the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) but also keep that “exclusivity” and “work” put into a festival reward car, so for example, this next update has the SF90 Stradale, and only for this month (it will come up on some updates in the future, but that still has FOMO), but if you include the Invitation system, you could obtain this car after the update doing these challenges, so, as a visualization, you’d select Ferrari, and there, you’d have the option to select different invitations, for each exclusive Ferrari, you select it, and then the challenges will show up and be tagged (just like a player can with the accolades).
