What makes a car "common", "rare", "epic" or "legendary"?

just looking at the Chevy K10 '72 (no reason for that other than it prompted the thought), which has appeared once, I think, but is a “common” car

the “legendary” Ferrari 599XX E is in the shop

one of the “common” shop cars might be considered properly legendary (if you ask me), the Willys Jeep, but there I’m thinking more generally than might be the case in “car culture”

okay, that sort of oddity is fairly well-known but what (other than “that’s where PGT10 put it”) is the reasoning?

I guess the tags on a car are for how often they appear in the real world. You would probably see a Chevy K10 more likely than a Ferrari 599XX E.

Could be - but are there a lot of Willys Jeeps around? Very rare to see one here these days, seen more McLarens than those.

I don’t think there’s any singular set parameter, value is one possible definition for a car being Legendary as everything from the Enzo at 2.8M onwards is one.

I think the answer really is as boring as PG decides it, I mean I’d love to live wherever in the world the Schuppan is common for instance, even the skill trees don’t match the rarity tier in the game.

I’m sure if I remember rightly some cars rarities were changed fairly early on in the game as well, so I think logic plays maybe 30% of the part (mainly value + sometimes history) but PG still hold the majority of the say.

I think it meant a bit more in FH4 as the skill trees were much more consistent for what rarity a car was but it’s a daft system that doesn’t really need to be in a racing game.

Very true. I saw a Lamborghini Huracan driving around my town. Never seen a Willy’s Jeep, though!! The fh5 car rarity tags don’t make any sense.

You’ve excluded my answer.

A dart board, pictures of the cars on the dartboard, a blindfold, darts, a member of PG staff.

I don’t know. Ask the developers of Fortnite who PG blindly copied.

Probably something like the cool wall from old Top Gear went down in the offices at PGG. And honestly, I’m totally ok with that.

It might also have something to do with the skills available on the car, though I don’t think so remembering cars off the top of my head.

Even the Cool Wall had it’s flaws. I don’t recall where it ranks in the game but the the Jaguar E-type is without question of Legendary status.

The Willys is Legendary simply because of it’s status in history.

Should the status be based on car culture? Car value? Car history? Or just plain done away with and value of cars based on typical market values?

I think rarities only matter for autoshow and wheelspin cars.

The cool wall was entirely flawed, and that’s what made it great.

Extremely biased, played up for entertainment, self-indulgent fun. Ultimately meaningless too.

I feel the same way about the car rarity rating in game.

The Willys is common because someone at PGG lost a bet… or wasn’t tall enough.

Well, your cool wall analogy could easily apply to the old top gear as a whole. But then, the same thing is what makes me great as well so it’s easy to understand. :+1::call_me_hand::rofl:

One weird thing is that you’ll pay 20 million for a “common” playlist car, but you’ll pay nothing for a “legendary” barn find car.

I believe the Cool Wall was based on what Clarkson thought would suit having Kristin Scott Thomas sitting in the passenger seat. She however when a Star In A Reasonably-Priced Car, said she drove a G Wiz electric car, and liked the uncool ones on the list.

As to rare sightings, living in England I don’t think I’ve seen many K10s. Going past the McLaren factory for work, I’d see at least one of them a day on a shakedown run, or fuelling up at the Shell/Honda garage.

I feel the same way. I don’t see the need for PGG to arbitrarily decide the rarity of cars.
These rarity ranks don’t seem to contribute to the enjoyment of the game. PGG should spend their time developing the game instead of wasting time thinking about car rarities.

If I could vote, I would like it!

I always thought it was determined by PG as to the overall availability of a vehicle, by way of wheel spins, playlist awards, etc. But I am probably wrong.

Let me give you an example. The 2005 Honda NSX-R (late model) and the 2005 Honda NSX-R GT are both epics. The NSX-R (late model) is a mass-produced car with 140 units sold. The NSX-R GT was announced with a limit of five units, but only one was confirmed for sale. If it were me, I would set the NSX-R GT as Legendary.

As you can see, there are many things for which the rarity ranking is inappropriate. And the fact that the existence of rarity does not contribute to the fun of the game is another reason why rarity should be removed from FH.

P.S. : Article covering the NSX-R GT that was actually sold

It’s probably arbitrary.

well, it’s a bit odd; there are definitely general trends there but some oddities, too

AM DB5 should definitely be legendary, it’s THE Bond car
Jaguar E-Type should really be legendary
LR Series III is only common - how?
MINI '65 is rare - that’s mad, it really, REALLY is a legend of a car, as is
Willys Jeep - how is that common not legendary?
