What game got you serious about Racing games

I was just wondering what game got you serious about Racing games ?
With me it was the first Need For Speed game on the 3DO console. It was the first 3D racer i’d played & it took me a while to master, but it got me hooked on racing games.
The graphics for the day were almost photorealistic compared to anything that came before it & racing in a real life car, though traffic on 1 of 3 stretches of road from a drivers view point inside the car was astonishing.
Back then NFS was sponsored by a car magazine & took a more semi realistic approach to driving than the titles that would come out later on Playstation.

need for speed payback and gta

Road & Track presents: The Need for Speed was the full title.
I’ve played all of the NFS titles, but the one that hit home was Porsche Unleashed (or Porsche 2000 in other places).

3DO?!?! I thought I was the only one with that console. Road Rash was my favorite and was my introduction into the racing genre.

That was the full title, thanks for that. I take it was a US mag as it was just released Need For Speed in the UK but I got the US release from an indie store I used as 3DO was region free .
I remember the Porsche game on Playstation. I really enjoyed it. Good game.

We were few in number us 3DO guys @JDMjuic3box , thats for sure . I had an Atari Jaguar before that , even less numbers than 3DO & terrible for Racing games , but both consoles sell for crazy prices now. Wish id have kept them.
3DO was an excellent console though. Road Rash was great fun on it & looked fantastic.

I missed the Snes era. I started on Atari Jaguar but the racing games on the Jag were terrible apart from this one side on Rally game that was fun & I think was on Snes as well .
I would have loved to have tried the Snes. My first Nintendo console was the N64 .

My earliest memories of playing racing games were Network Q RAC Rally, Need for Speed 2: SE, Carmageddon, NFS3: Hot Pursuit, Midtown Madness, Powerslide, etc. Loved those and put lots of hours in them. I played lots more but cant list or remember them all but these were some of my favorites.

Now mainly playing Forza Horizon 4, 5, FM8 and NFS 2015. Almost done with NFS, then installing NFS Heat!

Some good titles there @LuculentPigeon8 . I have a sweet spot for NFS , only missing 2 titles in the series. I really enjoyed NFS 2015 but found the A.I. & Police to be abit tame, but the game had a great vibe about it & I loved the FMV characters.
I enjoyed Heat but the Police can get real serious in hunting you down during the illegal night races which was fun as you lose your nights winnings if caught. Hope you enjoy it.
NFS Unbound is a fun one. I had enjoyed that game.
I’ve never really played any of the Horizon titles but I ive played all Motorsport games.

Wow ! Thats a classic racer. I hoped that would have been included in the Atari 50 Years disc but it wasnt.

My first games were rally and Need for Speed games.

I think the earliest game I can remember playing was Network Q RAC Rally Championship. I don’t remember the name at all, in fact it might have been sold under a different name entirely here, but it’s the one game that has a Proton Wira and a Skoda Felicia, and I remember that vividly.

I had a few other rally games, I can definitely remember Colin McRae Rally 2.0, and maybe 2005. What’s sure is I never played after it became Dirt.

My first NFS was III Hot Pursuit, then High Stakes. Then I remember the shift from Ferraris to Civics. Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon. I slowly lost interest in the franchise after that, even though I still played ProStreet, Shift, Hot Pursuit 2010, and Most Wanted 2012.

We had TOCA Race Driver, but I can’t remember playing it much, it was far too advanced for my level at the time. I did play Grid and Grid 2. There was also the oddball FlatOut 2, and later WreckFest. Grand Prix Legends too, I think the only actual F1 game I played.

I played Forza 4, which is the only non-PC game in this whole list. Dabbled a bit with Forza 6 Apex, then dived into 7, Horizon 5, and now Motorsport 2023.

Edit: I forgot a bunch.

Firstly, I think I actually played “modern” F1 games, Grand Prix games, not entirely sure which ones between 2, 3 and 4.

Then there’s a bunch more oddballs I definitely played. Midtown Madness 2. 4x4 Evolution. Juiced. Re-Volt, but I think it was just the demo. Also the classic Driver, and the definitely less classic Driver San Francisco. I played The Crew as well, only because Ubisoft gave it for free.

A game I played a lot in high school and I can’t believe I forgot: TrackMania United Forever. We would play it regularly with a few friends, I made a boatload of tracks for it, I made a boatload of paintjobs. Man, I put some hours in that game.

And then recently, BeamNG.drive, that I still play occasionally when a new update pops up.

I love rally games from I tried a side scrolling rally game on Atari Jag, Power Drive Rally maybe ? but Sega Rally on Saturn was my first ‘3D’ rally title.
Id love to have tried that Network Q RAC title as a few people have mentioned it.
Some really great titles there @AdmPatate , i’ve played a most of them as well but never a Horizon title.

Going through the Wikipedia list of racing videogame, I realise I forgot a few.

Easy to do . I’ve played that many Racing titles over the years on consoles that all died early to Playstation that i’ve forgotten some as well as it was mainly race games I went for.
