The Original Skoda Fabia WRC Car, wasn’t the most successful but it pretty much carried Skoda into the WRC
You would think that since VW owns Skoda, that PG could just go to them and ask them for licensing to use Skoda cars in the Forza Horizon games.
If it was that easy then Skoda would be significantly more popular in racing games in general.
The only games that feature real Skoda models are the official WRC games, Gran Turismo 7 features the Skoda VGT concept but that isn’t a real car.
VW doesn’t want to licence out Skoda it seems (same with SEAT), most likely because they want the majority of the marketing attention for your average consumer car (i.e cars below Audi) on VW models as opposed to their “lesser” brands.
That makes sense from a marketing standpoint, but where does that leave Cupra? Considering we already got three of those, but never got any more.
I believe we have Cupra since VW was heavily pushing them as a new brand and they’re expected to carry the sporty hybrid/EV moniker in the coming years.
Since they’re officially separate from normal SEAT the VW executives probably decided they needed some extra marketing to bring attention to the brand.
Especially since the models we got were the Urban Rebel EV concept and two SUVs which the other VW brands didn’t really cover.
For example the only SUV from the Volkswagen group we had at that point was the Lamborghini Urus which is a completely different price group, we’ve since gotten the ID.4 but that was a long time afterwards.
The fact that we haven’t gotten any more Cupras but have gotten a few cars from the other VW brands means that I think the executives decided that pushing them wasn’t worth it for the time being compared to their other brands (despite the obvious interest here in models like the Cupra Leon).
Fair enough, but that sounds more like VW has taken the wrong approach in selecting cars for licensing. Horizon is very diverse, but going for something like the ID4 is a long shot by miles.
If I was in the position of VW I’d rather gauge interest in what kind of vehicles would actually be popular among the kind of people that play Forza and what kind of vehicles they use. Like the Seat/Cupra Leon or fun Skodas, because these kind of cars actually have a fanbase and will attract people to their showrooms or parts sales through games.
But alas, we can’t decide for car companies what they should do, for worse or for better. All we can do is hope they would be kind enough to hand out licenses for these games one day.
Yea VW is one of the weirdest when it comes to licensing in general.
Some brands they’re super free with and you see so many of their models everywhere (like Lamborghini) but with others they clutch them as tight as humanly possible and never let anyone see them.
GT7 having a VGT Skoda is probably a sign that Skoda’s attitude to racing games outside of rally games has changed and they’ve probably seen the representation Cupra has in FH5, so it’s possibly a sign of change
Hopefully
Skoda would be a welcome addition to the series wherever it’s the rally cars or the regular cars like the Octavia vRS
