The Silver Dawn was Rolls-Royce’s first car that could be ordered ‘complete’ from factory = including a body shell. Previous Rolls-Royce were built as chassis including technical components, then sent to coachbuilders (e.g. Park Ward, Hooper, Mulliner, James Young etc) who put a body onto the chassis as specified by the customer, this caused immense variety in styling of the commissioned cars even though the factory chassis was the same. The Silver Dawn was the first car of the brand which could be ordered with a ‘Standard Steel’ body, here is an official photo of what this finished factory-delivered car looked like:
Some customers did of course continue ordering their cars the old fashioned way, commissioning a coachbuilder to equip their new Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn chassis in their preferred shape, the below version built by Hooper is just one of dozens they could choose from.
