So I’m doing the Retro tour and just started the 60s Grand Prix event with the Lotus Type 35.
I noticed there’s a lovely disc brake glow on the inside of the tire in cockpit but it disappears literally within a second as if somebody turned on a lantern and blew it out.
Isn’t the glow supposed to linger around for a while and gradually go back to normal and not “snap” back to normal?
Did a quick cruise through YouTube to see how it is IRL
(This one doesn’t have many shots where it’s easy to have a look at the rotors for long after they’ve let off the brakes, but there’s a couple)
(Skip to 1:38 for some good brake disc glow… Or not, the first minute and a half is pretty cool to watch
)
My observations after watching these videos:
- There’s something deliciously satisfying about watching the brakes do their thing
- The amount of time the glow sticks around likely depends on how hot they’ve gotten and how fast the vehicle is travelling soon after the application of the brakes (which would cool off the brakes)
- At least compared to Forza, the glow stays a long time after being heated up. Meanwhile in Forza the glow goes away pretty quickly
As a separate note, I remember thinking FH5 and maybe FM23 (I’d have to check) handling the brake glow differently than previous Forzas. It’s much easier to get the brakes to get really hot braking in a heavier car than a lighter car, but I think in older Forzas they would glow at the same rate regardless of the weight of the car. I could be wrong and maybe I only just noticed it in FH5 though. It just makes me think “What if Forza ever simulated brake fade”…

Ah that makes me miss the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta such a gorgeous car.

Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 4 had the realistic brake disc glow.
They changed it in Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Motorsport 2023. Most likely because they thought nobody will notice and that it was unnecessary computing time.
But that is some detail that annoys me, like using the 2D rims at a certain rotation speed. It breaks the immersion. And I don’t think that modern PCs or game consoles need these kind of “cheating” to provide a certain amount of frames per second.

This seems to permeate a lot of modern gaming, sure we get crisper graphics and frame rates or whatever but I feel like often time so many little details, labors of love, that a bunch of add up to a very immersive gaming experience, and are removed or downgraded as we’ve gotten newer games.
Edit: things like the rear defuser flaps were active with the spoiler on the LaFerrari in FH3 but then removed in newer games.
The F12berlinetta actually had the front opening brake cooling flaps modeled/moving, also lost.

And then they add Ray Tracing for the fps hit
Look at my bug report. You’ll see that. There’s your answer.
I’m surprised that T10 didn’t add the affect of the small sparks that sometimes come of the pads under extreme braking or as they start to go off
How good would it be if the upgrade option for Ceramic Brakes would glow a different color
