Online races - destruction derby

I played online FH2 and 3 for years and for me it was always about online racing. The solo campaign was ok for a week maybe two. In FH4 it seems someone made the decision to remove any incentives for clean racing or for aiming to achieve the best times. At the same time there is a strong incentive for ‘team wins’. Unsurprisingly players have adapted to the new rules and now the races online seem like a destruction derby, with couple of people in every lobby taking it on themselves to take out players from the opposing team. In turn it causes the people who would otherwise race clean to get even and the whole thing turns into joyful ramming fest. While in previous forzas you always had rammers and wall riders, in FH4 due to game design this kind of play is actually encouraged.
I understand this may be a strategic decision to distinguish horizon series even more from the motorsport series, but I think it will transform FH4 into one big playground game, with no room for anyone who would like a relatively clean race once in a while.

I understand that these are early days, people don’t know tracks, etc, but my impression is that it will not get any better simply due to the way how the rewards in the game are set up. If it sounds like a rant, it kind of is, as I feel like a muppet for forking out 80 quid for a game I will most likely not want to play in few days and since it’s a digital download I can’t sell. Hope enough people will stay in FH3.

I have also noticed this deliberate taking out of the opposing team. I am guessing at some point changes will be made to multiplayer to account for it, whether that is through some sort of “kick” mechanic, no-collision mode, or something else.

I do prefer the “Finish as high as possible” approach over the “Combine finish and experience” approach that FH3 had, but the team nature of multiplayer has resulted in some unintended consequences. I don’t think they’re quite “demolition derby” level, at least not any more than FH3 was, but certainly a system to remove players who deliberately ram opposing team members into a barrier would be welcomed.

really you’ve been playing since at least forza 4 where we were in the same club.

i cant see how you can be happy with what the game is now and say oh they’ll introduce a kick or ghost mode soon,

the game takes a huge step backwards in terms of online,

Everyone knows what online racing is like in Forza including the Devs, so who’s bright idea is it to remove ghost mode from the game, remove options like dirt racing only or tarmac racing only, not being able to stick with a certain class.

to have all that in forza horizon 3, and then to remove that seems ludicrous to me.

the Devs dont listen or do not play the game,

Kick functions have been asked for by people since they binned it and oh look its never made a appearance again despite the request for it as well as various other modes that have gone down paths which are clearly wrong

Being happy with a game and acknowledging its flaws are not mutually exclusive. The game has many high points. It also has flaws, which are constantly being discussed. That doesn’t mean I have to despise the game and never play it again.

Them making decisions that you do not agree with does not mean they are not listening. And saying they “do not play the game” is simply false.

ive not said i despise the game, just that it has taken a huge step backwards with regards to online, i enjoy the game.

buts it Flaws out way the good right now.

and i can say that based on the online for this game.

if they truly played the game they would know what is an isn’t a good idea straight away.

they play the game for an hour or two in their little bubble and stream it live.

which noway correlates to what the game is actually like to play.

you could ask anyone who’s played Forza for a while if getting ride of ghost only races is a good idea and everyone would say NO.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree there, then. I’ve already played something like 30+ hours.

They made the game. They will have more in-depth knowledge and playtime then any of us will ever have. I’m sure they had all sorts of people in-house playtesting the game, etc. Saying they didn’t, or don’t, play the game is simply ludicrous.

After few more races my observation of the online games is that ranked games tend to involve more dirty play, than the quick adventures.
The ranked games seem to be on average attracting more skilled players, so sometimes it’s just not possible to pull away from the mosh pit. While races in FH3 were not clean by any standard, it was not like this and normally you could spot consistently dirty racers by their poor XP results. I know that XP is sometimes abused in FH3 and every now and then you get a player who just drifts in the back, but overall I think the XP/position combination determining your overall result was a really good solution.

I do hope it is not a fully deliberate decision to make FH4 less of a racing game and more of a arcadey, playground entertainment, possibly aimed at younger audience and that some adjustments to online play are still possible.

I wish people would stop trying to turn this game into froza motorsport. It’s not a serious racer.can you save your driver etiquette moaning for motorsport 7 forums?

It also isnt destruction derby, a little proper racing from people wouldnt go amiss. Its supposed to be a racing game not a crashing game.

Well, this is my whole point. I don’t want to have the rigidness and driver etiquette as in motorsport, but in my opinion in FH3 the balance between racing and smash’em up was just right. Now we are moving more towards bumper cars, mainly due to the way game incentives have been set up.

I think you’ve made a fair point. I was aiming my post at the people who are trying to bring that rigidness to the game. I ended up only playing ghost leagues on motorsport due greifers and whiners. I enjoy the racing on this as it’s far more relaxed and fun.

this horizon is no racing game. it’s a dress-up and dance contest!

I sometimes crash into others but not on purpose its due to lost control or simply my blinds as i just focus eyes front

If you want to crash into and wreck people get OnRush. Obviously accidents happen but don’t overreact. Wreck all you want, that’s the idea in that game. Not the case with H4 even though it is an arcade title. Being courteous an respectful of others while racing is never bad. You will make more friends too. This isn’t a Burnout style game where taking others out is part of it. Earn a first place the right way otherwise it’s an empty victory.

The new race mode is horrible, i love this game, but the FREE ROAM RUSH (i dont know how is called in english) is horrible, its not fun at all, i can only use a handfull of cars in this mode, ffs guys, what is happening here.

Team Adventure and setting up an online race is different.
Team Adventure is about making your team win, and as Forza states in the intro to Team Adventure: race fast or use tactics to make your team win. So people do.

And freeroam rush is super fun. I’ve won with everything from Mclaren to trophy trucks. It’s all about throttle control when going across the fields. If you lose its because you lack the abilities to win. Simple.

Why on earth would you guys think it is smart to not turn off collision in ranked? The whole race turns into who can slam a guy in a corner and take his place… It is ridiculous, there isn’t any competition, the winner never wins because of better driving, is this not being investigated? As well as the “Freeroam Rush” events, no skill involved in that, just ignore roads and avoid trees… I wish in this day in age people could learn to play the proper way, but this takes the fun out of matches when its a destruction derby.

It’s a complaint as old as time itself. I’ve never seen a racing game that didn’t have complaints about multiplayer crashes.

But FH3 had it turned off, why turn it on in FH4?

It’s Forza Horizon. Don’t expect excellence.

It’s a much more serious issue in Forza Motorsport.
