One of the fastest road cars of the 1950s, the 450S Coupe Fantuzzi was actually a racing car underneath. The 450S had taken Maserati to two victories in the World Sportscar Championship in 1957. The single coupe had almost won the season/opening race in Argentina, but retired to a clutch failure and was converted to the stunning coupe seen above. The 4,5-liter V8 developed 400 PS, more than anything Ferrari was turning out at the time. A similarly rare beast, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe was the only car that could have challenged it at the time, but even its Grand PRix-winning I8 engine fell short of the Maserati’s V8.
