Jim Sterling review

So, would a child be allowed to walk into a casino and plonk their pocket money down onto the roulette table and place a bet on black?

No, they wouldn’t. They’d be turned away immediately by the door staff. Yet games are allowed to fling these gambling-like elements at them with no regulation, and no restriction. “Look at this, if you give us just $2 you might be able to get the character you want!”

“Oh, you didn’t get the one you wanted? Give us another $2 and you might be able to get it this time!”

That’s a rather moralistically driven comparison to make, that wasn’t entirely thought out. Lets start with the fact that by that by Microsoft terms of service you have to be of a certain age to make financial purchases. Though that age may be 13 years old, most 13 year old children don’t have debit or credit cards and have to go through their parents for these purchases. Thus, putting the responsibility onto the shoulders of parents where it rightfully belongs.

**Actually, I don’t even think it’s legal for a credit card to be issued to anyone under the age of 18 years old.

Then there is the flawed comparison in which you’re comparing a lootbox where you’re guaranteed something in exchange for your money, making it technically a randomized purchase; all the while being done from the safe and comfy environment of the family home. As compared to a casino where alcohol is served, sometimes in excess; likely to be filled with less than conservatively dressed women; sometimes men too. Not to mention betting everything on black could result in loosing everything… Hmmm…

Well, there goes your gambling comparison…

Try being more reasonable, and less hyperbolic.

===============

I mean seriously, if someone’s not old enough to legally have a credit card in their name. I mean the question really isn’t why he’s making the purchase, but who gave him the credit/debit card to do so unsupervised?

Wow. You’re so blinded by trying to defend this practice that you’ve completely missed out two things.

  1. I said “gambling-like elements” not “gambling”

  2. I never said anything about credit cards. I mentioned pocket money. Are you conveniently forgetting that pre-paid Xbox cards are a thing?

Gambling elements is the best way to describe the loot box practice, since at its core, gambling is based on a randomised outcome, with some being the outcome you want, and others being the one you don’t want. That’s not too dissimilar to loot boxes, is it?

Yes, that’s exactly why people under 21 aren’t allowed into casinos! Great argument! Nothing to do with the gambling itself, and the addictiveness of it. There’s a reason it’s regulated in such a way as to restrict people under a certain age from partaking in it. It allows them to be educated over a number of years the effects of gambling addiction, and how to avoid it. The young mind is highly susceptible to a lot of things. One of those things is addiction. That’s why some of the most addictive things out there that can cause harm are restricted to those old enough to make a rational decision about it. Those things include alcohol, cigarettes, and you guessed it, gambling.

By your logic here, it would be perfectly fine for a child to partake in online casinos.

That’s a rather high horse stance you’ve taken, without thinking your argument out very clearly.

Try being more reasonable.

Its not gambling, with gambling you are not sure you are going to win anything, with the loot crates, you are sure you are getting something, you just don’t know what but you DO get something.

I don’t recall this much whining about mod packs in Forza 6, or the perk that let you literally buy wheel spins in Horizon 3

I’m not a fan of what Turn 10 is doing with the crates in FM7. I didn’t mind the mod packs in FM6. The mods weren’t an integral part of the game. In other words, I didn’t buy FM6 for access to the mods, I bought it for the cars.

It appears that the only way to get some cars in FM7 is by buying crates. I’m not a fan of this. If I want a car in the game I should be able to buy it with in game credits or real world cash. Would anyone go to a car dealership and spend $50,000 for a car not knowing if they would get a Yugo or a Ferrari? Would you do this if it was the only way to buy a Ferrari? Obviously, this would not happen in real life but it is what is happening in the game.

I don’t mind crates having gear and cars. I just don’t like it being the only way to get the gear and cars.

I’m also trying to figure out the badges. Why are they in the crates? They should be symbols of what you’ve accomplished like in the boy/girl scouts.

I watched about a minute of this video and had to turn it off as it was way too try hard and I didn’t want to get ear cancer. How on earth does this guy have so many subscribers. A lot of little kids on YouTube I guess.

I didn’t appreciate him either. What a fool.

All he was doing was ad-libbing others sentiments to make himself more popular, theres a concept that works…lol.

He reminded me of a candidate for the monster raving lunny party.

I only watched to the end because i thought he’d sing ‘rocket man’. So dissapointed, not even candle in the wind.

[Mod Edit - Hieronymus (Profanity and its poster removed)]

That was an impressive first and only post. Unfortunately, the record for instances of profanity in one’s first ever post exceeds your, still respectable, 18, so unfortunately we’ve got to let you go.

Have a nice day.

I skipped Jim Sterling’s rant (for sure that wasn’t review) because I know exactly what I would find there. He is very passionate with his crusade but sometimes seems to overlook some important details. It may work for some other devs but in my opinion Turn10 doesn’t deserve it because they actually listen to us. Rolling starts and longer career races are just an example.

I said it before and I’ll repeat it in here - nothing changed since at least Forza 4 (that’s how long I play) in regard to cars you can’t “just buy”. I’m still missing barn find in FH3 because I’ve chosen to take a break at the wrong time. There is no way to get that car now. The only thing that changed in F7 is actual list of all cars you may be missing with padlock and brief descriptions along the lines of “available in events, forzathon, LOOT CRATES and so on”. So now there is outrage that “YOU HAVE TO SPEND TON OF MONEY TO GET EVERY CAR!!!11111oneoneONE”.
First there is no indication whatsoever that EVERY such car can be found in loot crate just like not everyone of them can be found in events. I can see it as just a chance that I can get the car I missed otherwise. Even if it won’t drop for my maybe it will drop as duplicate to someone else and I can buy it on AH. Again - the only change is that you can see all those cars in one place (wasn’t that also asked for? i.e. to see what car are available as HE/FE?)

Also credits are plenty. Even without buying the cheapest mod packs credits flow generously and with those mods rewards at least cover price of the pack (if you are unlucky) but setting race length to long I get twice the price in one race and many mods are multiple use.

I think this thread has run its course.

We’ve found out that Forza 7 is a glorified slot machine with an E rating.

And much like Jim says in his video, in Forza 8, you can guarantee that the car mods will be hidden behind loot boxes.

Get over it!!!

Very helpful!!!

You see, its not that simple.

If T10 remain true to intent and do add monetization, they are going to have to reveal the loot box drop rates.

Its an issue in multiple countries.

EDIT: should point out, like anything there is loopholes around this.

Selling currency = not gambling. The product you bought is known and not a random chance.

I get what you are saying,we will just have to see what happens Dust.

It is what it is,by now you know millions of posts won’t do any good,no bad intentions meant,i’ve just moved on,less stress!

You evidently haven’t moved on if you’re still poking your head into the thread and yelling “Get over it!!!” to people.
