Ford Bronco offroad racing - Big Oly

This topic is for voting on the 1969/1970 custom Baja racer built by Parnelli Jones.

Parnelli Jones’s 1969 Ford Bronco ‘Big Oly’ Baja 1000 Truck.

An icon of the Classic Baja and the single most expensive trucks ever sold in a modern Auction going for $1.87 Million in 2021

The Vehicle’s main claim to fame is taking the Overall Wins at the 1971 and 1972 Baja 1000 Races alongside several other Smaller Off-road Events at the time period.

Driven by Successful Race Driver Parnelli Jones who worked with Bronco Specialist Bill Stroppe to build a vehicle dedicated solely for Off-road Performance and Durability in events such as the Baja 1000.

It’s earned its nickname ‘Big Oly’ due to its primary Sponsor being the Olympia Brewing Company and being decorated in its stunning Gold, Black and White Livery.

The Vehicle is especially interesting as it was basically built from the ground-up using an Chrome-Moly Tube Frame with Fibreglass and Aluminium Bodypanels to produce a total weight of only 2620 lbs (1188 kg). For Engine and Drivetrain it was powered by the popular Ford 351 Windsor V8 producing around 390hp and being connected to a modified 3-Speed Ford C6 B&M Hyrdo Transmission.

The Vehicle needed a Roof to account for Rollovers and so the two designers came up with the Giant Wing which became an instant signature of the vehicle alongside providing Downforce.

The Car itself didn’t start off too well when it broke an Axle in the 1970 Baja 1000 causing it to retire prematurely but in 1971 and 72 it began to hit its stride and brought home both events as well as many others such as the Mint 400 and Baja 500.

The Car itself was retired from racing in 1974 and was kept in the personal Garage of Parnelli Jones only being brought out for occasional Shows and Exhibitions before being sold in 2021.
