First impression

I consider myself to be a racing game veteran, having played thousands of hours of all types of racing games, from sim to arcade. Now as a loyal Forza fan I was excited to see Forza 6 on PC. But the beta is just horrible in terms of first impressions.

First of all, it took forever to load and sign in to Xbox LIVE. Second, it is exactly like the Forza 6 demo in that it forces you to watch a cutscene and then puts you in a race where you can’t change the graphics or assists. I like to play with everything off, manual etc. and it’s insulting that the game is basically playing itself and I can’t do anything about it. I mean, you literally can just hold accelerate. No changing gear, not even having to brake since the game does that for you! The first thing I do when starting ANY game on any platform is immediately to visit the Options menu and tweak the settings to my liking. Forza 6 Apex doesn’t allow me to do this and honestly sours my impression of the game. Not to mention how horrible the game looks compared to Forza 5, and I’m running it on a PC more powerful than Xbox One with an SSD. Also there are stutters, freezes and missing textures at points. It also doesn’t run at 60 FPS. Then when you finally get out of the first race you have some guy talking to you as if you’ve never played a game before. PLEASE STOP TALKING AND LET ME INTO THE OPTIONS MENU! And then you find assists aren’t there, have to go to screen before an event. Then the guy starts talking to you as if you are blind and can’t read what the assists are. Then I go all the way to Veteran and find it still has lots of assists still partially on. Honestly, Turn 10, why are you doing this? Forza Horizon 2 had it perfect both for casual and hardcore racing fans and with Forza MOTORSPORT - the “serious” simulation franchise you’re forcing people to play with autobrake and automatic transmission on first race and tell them things they already know without option to skip? Just my thoughts.

My first impressions were slightly more positive than those of the OP

As I run a review channel, here’s what I think in a short video

Yes forcing you to watch the cutscene is painful, but imo it was a very bad idea to put you straight into a race without letting you set the options, graphics and assists properly.

To be fair, I’ve played a little more of it and the game does look a lot better in the rain; though I still get stuttering with dynamic optimisation on. I also like how the scoring, objectives and medals are done compared to the rather dry, repetitive and unimaginative way that previous games did it. Also a pleasant surprise to see the “old” Top Gear crew commentating some of it. It’s got potential and I’m glad it’s on PC, I like the idea of dynamic optimization with framerate targeting but I just hope the full game doesn’t force us into a race and introduce us to things we already know before letting us tweak the settings to our liking. It’s as if the developers think most people playing this game are complete idiots or something.

I’ve played all previous forza games and this is a dream come true. I’ve got a race sim that’s always needed Forza on the PC platform. Wheel support is a must but I know that’s coming. I’ve got to be able to see what my framerate is in-game and be able to adjust video options accordingly. I’ve had some stuttering issues but it looks wonderful. Surround sound options would be nice. The unskippable cut-scene is unforgivable, and you really should be able to set options before that initial race. TRIPLE MONITOR SUPPORT IS A MUST HAVE. VR support is important to me as well. The game looks and sounds amazing!

Dynamic optimisation causes some stutter mee too. So I set manually resolution 1920 x 1200, MSAA only 2, others maxed out. No stutter on RIO, running stable 60 FPS, once hit 58 FPS.

Yep that first racing without turn off assists or tweak graphics is hideous desing. same that annoucer, start 4 race and still voice and not let push buttons. I have played forza since first, SO I DONT NEED XXXX TUTORIAL. Lets us skip these. Why they wonder that some master race players thint that consoles are children, because this hand helding…

One thing I don’t understand is how with dynamic optimization I get below 30 FPS but with everything maxed out at 1080p I get around 50-60 FPS even though I don’t even meet the recommended requirements.

The dynamic processing of the video is obviously carrying quite an overhead. Which kinda defeats it’s purpose. lol. It’s probably just a bug and it will improve. You’d not expect it to run worse with dynamic settings. I’m running everything on Ultra/maximum settings and it’s running beautifully for me when it runs. It has a new habit of crashing but when it does run it runs perfectly. I think Dynamic settings are for those people who have a gaming rig they “Bought” and have no idea how it works. The kind of people who buy consoles but got a PC because it looks nicer not realising they’ll have to do some work. lol

I can only play it on a keyboard, it does not recognize Logitech controller, on a keyboard is this game unplayble as far you turn off assist.I hope they will add wheel & controllers support - outside Microsoft products. Except that, the cars feels more like a drifting challenge, oversteer a lot or understeer, but probably is this (mostly) because of keyboard controll. The graphics is very good.

What Logitech controller do you have? Recent ones can be set to Xinput with the toggle on the bottom, and for older versions you can use tools like x360ce to emulate an Xbox controller.

just get an Xbox One controller and a micro USB cable and you should be fine, imo the Xbox One controller is way better than the Logitech controller

Why I should buy a new controller, my current works fine in all other games. It’s just Microsoft trying to sell their gamepads,… with XInput nonsense. But ok, Microsoft,…what else to expect.

I run the game with an old Siatek P2600.

Most racing games I own (Dirt + Grid autosport) were completely compatible with gamepads. But I had to use the programing software (For Forza) so that my controler takes over the keyboard.
Who knows its still BETA they might make other controllers like wheels compatible… hopefully.

Forza has pretty good rain effects and water reflections. I am comparing this game to GRID autosport.
But I do get 120 FPS in Grid Autosport as it does utilizes 8 cores on my FX8350 (not fully 8 cores but it puts them to some sort of use).
I get crossfire in Grid Autosport as well.

I have to lower 3 settings so that the (Forza) game runs without glitches. Maybe the glitches is an optimization fix for future… (ultra reflections please?, Ultra shadows?, Ultra foilage?)
If we could get crossfire in Forza that would make my day!

I like the photo mode of this game very much, the shutter speed is very useful.

The first race annoyance is very minor in my opinion. It’s the same in the Xbox version. Considering how superior this game looks and runs at 4K with 8x antialiasing and a 60+ framerate (even for replays and vista etc, not just racing) it isn’t a big deal to have to wait for one race to change settings. I personally don’t get how my video card is running at these maxed out settings (I assume because this is the first program actually made to take advantage of a DX12 video card), but it’s hard to look at the Xbox version after this.
