FEEDBACK WANTED: Paint Space

I would really like an option to change the transpancy off a layer-group, too!

Henlo and good day from your boi to @Soy.
I’ve got a few ideas that I hope could add a little inspiration.

New Features
Paintable Race Spoiler aerofoil
Forza Race Spoiler aerofoil to be paintable in decal editor. To avoid mirroring onto the bottom, the texture would be curved in a U shape, encompassing the model starting from top to bottom. The FD RX7 allows this although only on the upper surface.

Aspect ratio adjustment of vinyl groups
About 3 title updates ago there was a bug where if you flip the vinyl group, adjusting the scale would affect the aspect ratio. Upon flipping back, the scaler would return to its normal operation. Since it was patched, I’ve come to miss that certain functionality.

Separate wheel rim and wheel center paint
On some cars while using the stock paint scheme, the stock two-tone wheel paint scheme would transfer over to almost all the aftermarket wheels. Since this is a possibility, it would be great to have that functionality included. It would also be a new to forza feature that would surely be well appreciated.

Legacy Features
Brake Caliper paint option

Legacy era metallic paint option
The old metallic paint option in the 360 era allowed quick and easy metallic paint selection. In Forza 5 and 6, it was replaced by the metal flake paint which further improved its aesthetic quality. However in Forza 7, the metal flake paint lacks the penetration and vibrance from the prior titles thus it lends itself to be of little use. Colors such as metallic sunburst orange are impossible to recreate in Forza 7, for example.

My list:

  1. Everything that’s paintable on the racecars should be paintable by the player, this includes windows and headlight covers, but also certain carbon fiber parts and windshield banners.

  2. All road cars should have paintable windows, with the ability to map vinyls on them. Carbon fiber and plastic accents also need to be paintable. Actually, painting grilles, chromed parts, etc. is a very popular mod in the real world, so it’d be nice to have in Forza.

  3. The paint booth needs a mode where we can paint in ambient light, like in Forza Horizon 4 and older Forza Motorsport games, as the current background is way too dark.

  4. Polished carbon fiber does not tint no matter where you place the sliders, this is a bug and needs to be fixed.

  5. Vinyl mapping for the player on some cars like Porsche 962 needs to be fixed as well.

  6. On cars like 458 Speciale and Gallardo Superleggera, let’s say I pick the default color with the stripes, if I paint wheels, spoiler, mirrors or tint windows the stripes are gonna disappear. This shouldn’t happen.

  7. A FILE MANAGER FOR ALL DESIGNS, TUNES AND SAVED RACES IN THE GAME! Doesn’t even have to be “in” the game, you could use Forza Hub for that. But we need this. Badly.

A snap function so that aligning vinyls from top of car and side of car is easier and quicker.

Window sections should be paintable for more realistic race liveries. The fact that this needs to be mentioned for Forza 8 is surprising.

I would LOVE to :

  • Paint on windows
  • Paint Front and Rear wheel rims separatly
  • Paint brakes calipers
  • Paint Headlights
  • Paint cars in a plain studio with neutral lighting and/or an outdoor painting space
  • Use different layer materials (gloss, metallic, chrome, matte etc…)

Add more layers and fixes car glitches like blank spaces or distortion vinyls.

Can you automaticaly managed designs for the car choosen and not for every cars at the same time ?

cheers

Hello,

the following additions to paint mode would be nice:
•Design as a car independet template (i know designs would not fit directly to each different car shape, but so we can eventually adept a design to a different car without much work)
•Design with generated/added zones for sponsors and number badges. (for example you can define the upper part of the windscreen as zone and the user then select a sponsor and it autofits to this Zone.
•Painting all parts of the car (windscreen/sidewindows/tires/rims/maybe cockpit )
•cutting with shapes (subtract second shape from first shape) (like some posts before mine, with the star example)
•free paint mode to the car like the pencil in ms paint. •paint mode with lines, circles, … where we click to the start point and then move controller/mouse to get to endposition or define the radius of a circle.
•get the car base texture flat to the screen (like the raw textures, so we can paint to this)
•export/import as dxf/png or another alpha capable pic format to edit with external Tools
for the last points, maybe we can get a pc standalone paint editor for xbox users without the need to install full FM7 to PC. (so we can paint even with an older pc)

Maybe, some wishes would find the way to a debate.

This is going to be a long post XD

  1. We should be able to paint brake calipers or even put decals on them.
  2. Being able to paint rims different colors front and rear.
  3. Being able to paint different parts of the rim, such as spokes, lip, hub caps, lug nuts etc.
  4. Being able to put vinyls on windows, headlights, wing mirrors, front splitters, wings, carbon fiber, grills, plastic and chrome.
  5. Choosing a finish for the vinyl would be nice, like chrome, matte, carbon etc.
  6. A cutter, as mentioned above where you can cut shapes out of a vinyl could be cool, so would be proper text / lettering mechanic instead of having to copy past 1 letter 15 times and then change them individually.
  7. There’s a lot of paint glitches. For example, carbon fiber can’t be tinted even though it says it can. If you put bronze finish or copper finish on rims, they reset when moving stationary. For example they’ll be bronze when stationary but when the car is moving they’ll be silver. Some parts of cars are not paintable or are just awkward like the 2017 Ford GT.
  8. I would love a freehand sketch tool where you can make any shape you want. For example, press and holding A and moving the joystick around to make whatever you want.
  9. Tire lettering or the ability to put vinyls on tire walls.
  10. Maybe a headlight and taillight tint mechanic similar to the “tint window” mechanic.
  11. As mentioned above, vinyls can be distorted on curved surfaces.
  12. There’s a lot of inconsistencies to what surfaces you can apply vinyls to. Take the McLaren 720s for example, that car has a lot more paintable surface are than most others.

Everyone has presented many great ideas especially one I’ve wanted for the longest time.
A text-lettering typing tool.

I would be very pleased to have cut-out tools too.

Just a few ideas from my perspective:

  • The “My Designs” section needs an overhaul, or at least the ability to filter by the current car. It takes too long to go through all of my designs to find one I was working on and/or delete an old design when I want to change one I’ve saved to a vehicle. Part of the reason this is a problem is because of the design limit.

  • A few more customization options - ability paint calipers, tint headlights/taillights, black out chrome window/grill trim, etc.

  • Ability to color stripes on cars like the old 60s/70s muscle cars without having to re-trace them. Right now, those stripes disappear when I try to do a custom color combination.

  • A way to paint over the ugly black plastic trim pieces. There are too many beautiful liveries that are ruined by a large black stripe down the middle (think of the 80’s BMWs)

  • More text fonts - of the available fonts, only one or two of them actually look good on a car IMO.

  • Add a few more default ‘manufacturer’ logos, and the ability to change their colors. It is impossible to make a good looking racing livery today without creating every logo.

  • The OPTION for painters to choose to share unlocked logos/layer groups with the painter getting some sort of reward every time it is downloaded, used on a design that is shared, every time that design is downloaded, etc.

I’m hoping for the following features to be implemented in the Forza paint space:

  • The ability to paint everything on the cars that the cars arrive with.
Clarification: Some race cars’ default paint schemes have decals on their front and rear banners, as well as B-posts, side windows and mirrors. Some of these areas can’t be painted once entered into the paint booth. Example: the NASCAR stock cars.

  • Improved lighting with a choice of several different sources in different locations.
Clarification: Currently, it feels like we’re working in the shade in a badly lit garage. I’d love to see the option of different light sources, like natural outdoors light, indoors light sources of various kinds (spotlights, light strips, etc).

Quite a simple one for me.

It would be good if in the paint body section we could have the following as additional new items:

Front Bumper
Rear bumper
Side Skirts
Roof

This would save time in so far that it would reduce the amount if masking needed.

Also and the biggest one for me, as we can no longer gift design’s it is now impossible to do true collaborations, I know the old system was not perfect (stolen designs etc.) but IMO it was better than no system at all. I have several friend I would like to colab with and we can’t.

Thanks

Change the save options so “save to current car” just saves to current car. I like to just change the colour and put my number plate on most of my cars, I don’t want to have to trawl through all these files to find actual designs.

YES!

We can already do this with tunes. Why not with paints as well?

It’s really annoying to buy a car and have new colors take design slots. What we make by ourselves should not take up space unless we have to share it.

THIS!! Just repainting your cars once leaves you with a long list of "forza livery"s. Some sort of filter function would be great too.
Lighting in the paintshop and vinylshop are terrible. Your car can look three different colours depending on whether you are in either workspace or on the track. Even in your homespace there is plenty of natural light coming through the roof, but none of it is on the car.
By the way, thank you for giving us our .1s back.

That’s a nice long list of improvements. It would be great if some of these are implemented. One thing that really irks me is the Renault RS17, Not being able to put vinyls on the rear wing is a huge disappointment for me, and placing vinyls on the left or right of the car to find that you also have to place the vinyl on top view too as half of the vinyl is missing makes the whole process very tedious and rather ugly at times. Thanks for asking us painters what we think…it is much appreciated

All of these need to be implemented. A few more:

  1. Why can’t we paint or put vinyls on the black portions (hood, side skirts, rear wing) of the 2014 #3 C7.R Corvette?
  2. The NASCAR Fords need to have the wheels fixed. The #22 Duralast Fusion will keep the green logo and stripe when the wheel is painted a different color.
  3. All NASCAR manufacturer cars need to have the lug nuts colored yellow.
  4. You can’t paint ANY of the spoilers or “B” pillers on ANY of the NASCAR Ford Fusions.
  5. You can’t paint ANY of the spoilers or “B” pillers on ANY of the NASCAR Chevy Super Sports
  6. You can’t paint ANY of the spoilers or “B” pillers on ANY of the NASCAR Toyota Camrys
  7. Many, many, many cars with spoilers or add-on wings can not be painted or lettered.
  8. Let us use the SAME templates as the TURN 10 developers use. The templates we use in game are all non-cemetrical and have the most insane locations for splits.
It is impossible to place vinyls on the lower front fenders of any car due to template splits and have it not distorted to the point it looks like a 3 year old did it with a crayon, or the vinyls
have to be shrunken down so that they are impossible to see and look nothing like what we see on the actual car. Placing vinyls on the front and rear wheel flares of the race cars distort
so bad it again looks like a 3 year old did it with a crayon.
  9. Let us be able to organize our vinyl groups. I get tired of having to sift through 2000 groups to find the 1 group I want.

First, thanks for starting thread!
I agree with others here on all mentioned short comings with paint booth and creator section.
My biggest concern is lighting. I have all but stopped making liveries in F7 due to lighting problem. I have to work on left side of cars first as left side is lighter and easier to see. And it is so bad, I paint white or dark base colors to make placing logos easier… then repaint base to desired color.
Another grip for me is when I’m doing simular club liveries for others, the file system goes crazy when saving several identical liveries with only differences being car numbers and driver names! And after sharing to individual drivers, I can’t unshare after they grab their design… Great example, I do wife’s liveries for our club cars. Usually same base design I’m running, but with different base color, and car number etc. After sharing and she gets design on her car I unshare design. But designs are still out there being down loaded.

Just hope all you guys who grabbed her designs are happy in Barbie Pink and Passion Purple cars with ‘Rosie’ plastered on doors! lol…

I would like to see some major changes made to the livery editor.

  • I find the Livery editor to be a bit clunky on Windows 10. I feel it needs an overhaul that promotes some efficiency when using a Keyboard and Mouse. As it is now, I have to use the menus to do simple things like switching from moving a vinyl shape, to changing it’s scale. Those options should also have a key binded to them. So if I wanted to move a shape, I’d press “M”. Or of I wanted to skew the shape, I’d press “K” or something. This should also apply to switching between vinyl types. Perhaps a 2 or 3 letter short cut command would work best. I use to use AutoCAD and key commands were the lifeblood of efficient use.

  • Also I don’t like having to navigate screen after screen to find things like letters. I would like a tool pallet that shows everything, or at least categories, and once I select the category I want, then show me everything in that category. Also have the tool pallet arranged vertically. It takes up way too much space on a PC monitor. Maybe this would mean that controller users have a layout similar to what is in Forza at the moment, and KB+Mouse users could opt for a layout better suited to KB+Mouse use.

  • Use of the Forza Hub app for an away from game Decal editor. It can be light weight for Mobile use, but uses the same tools found in the Forza games. And once Forza is running, Forza Hub’s editor would plug into the game on PC and add higher level functions to the Decal Editor, like text wraping, Spell check. Image transparency (for tracing decals or what have you). Image importing… ect.

  • Decal condensing. Turn the decal into an image, so it then will take up only 1 layer space.

  • Tablet/stylus editing. Simple drawing tools for decal creation.

  • Project a center line onto car in editor.

  • Simple Vector tools, for quick lines and AutoCAD like Spline tools.

  • Fill above/Below/Between tool. Similar to how the Fill tool works in MS Paint.

  • Layout template. Design your livery on a simplistic layout of your car, and the finish design would wrap onto the car. Have a skew and transform tool to fix any weirdness due to the car’s geometry.

  • Coordinate between faces/side of the car. Helps to wrap a shape/decal from one side of the car to the adjacent side.

  • Apply to similar functionality. The player can make a design for a car, and if it has a sister car, then that design could be applied to it as well. For example a design made for a Nissan 370Z that can be applied to a Nissan Nismo 370Z, but then the problem areas can be addressed by the player.

  • User Editable decals/text. Say a player creates a number plate for a racing series. That player can share the number plate with everyone in the racing series, and everyone who uses that decal can change their entry number. This is a simple example, because this wouldn’t be limited to just decal text, but car colors and player names on cars. Let the person who creates the editable decals set the parameters. They should have the ability to restrict colors, or what can be changed, or even set character limits for names.

  • Edit Driver suits… If I drive for a made up racing team, I want that made up racing team’s colors and patches on my driver’s suit.

Being able to paint windows (Maybe have a similar system to painting the sides of the car, like different tabs for painting the front windshield, rear window, left & right window)
Paint using the special colors (Carbon Fiber, Chrome, Wood, Zinc, Flake, etc.)
Even lighting all around the car. I always have to paint on one side first because the other side is darker.

Other things that would be cool but I can live without:

Tintable Lights
Being able to paint different parts of the rims (I think we can do that already, but only on certain cars by changing the color of the car itself. Think Ford F-100, some cars from Mercedes, BMW 507.)
Painting Brake Calipers (Can just be basic colors, nothing too fancy like decals)
Ability to paint on mirror covers (Probably in its own tabs, Left Mirror & Right Mirror), forza aero (Splitters in the Top tab, Wing in the Spoiler Tab)

This will mostly pertain to the F1 cars for better representation of replicas. The default livery for the Renault R.S. 17 has decals on the places I am goin to mention which are currently unavailable for paint.

ability to apply paint and layers to the entirety of the front and rear wings
ability to apply layers to mirror covers
ability to apply specialty paint to layers and not only base paint
not sure if this is a paint issue or car model issue but there is a horrible warping effect on certain panels of the car when applying layers
