So had the Ultimate edition since day one, and still not managed a single game online.

Is it turn 10 or Microsoft that don’t know what they are doing? How can you have the same problem as you did in previous games?
Those services are on “Automatic” on my system.
You could try both “Manual” and “Automatic” mode, see if that fixes anything.
