Design Feedback & Ideas

A while back I started a design for the 57 Chevy, which is among my all-time favorite classic cars in the game. Unfortunately I’ve hit a case of painter’s block with it. I’m actually finding the Bel-Air can be tricky to produce a good design since the car by itself has such a great look.

Here’s a B&W work-in-progress of where I’m at right now:

I’m happy with the chrome on the top, tailfins, and trunk - that’s turned out pretty good so far. And I started with some monochrome flames on the front end of the car … but that’s not going so well. Admittedly, I struggle to paint flames very well and I’m reconsidering going that route with the front end of the design. My original thought was also a black and white style but a color design might work with the chrome tailfins and top.

Any thoughts/alternatives for the front end design are welcome and appreciated. I’m sort of stuck at this point, but this design still has some potential to it, so I don’t want to abandon it.

I’d forget the flames (too fussy) and perhaps echo some of the shape of the tail fins on the front fenders in chrome. Or just keep the front in black.

Or… a set of varying length chrome strips going from the headlight (where you’ve got the flames).

what about a simple fade of chrome to black?
i.e. put gradient around the front, turned so that the fade is facing front- you could also then cover the bare chrome with a black layer with some transparency (to give the chrome a ‘smoked’ look)

There’s that piece of trim that runs the length of the car. That could divide the car into a topside and a lowside. Maybe a gradient fade black-to-chrome on the topside and everything below the trim line would stay black. Transition from black to smoked section to full chrome.
