I looked up and follow all the steps, but just can’t seem to get the split screen working. I went to free play, and it does say press menu button for player 2 to join. But when I do, it does not do anything. The second controller just acts as player 1.

The second controller is working properly from what you’re saying. Using the first controller to set up the race how you want and pick your car, then select a car for the second person with the second controller. Then hit start. That’s all you have to do man.
