I wonder why for the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, all the Maxis entered had a welded up hatch, with the bottom half opening like a normal boot. Presumably to make the shell more rigid, but if so, why not just use the Austin 1800 (aka Landcrab) that did so well in the 1968 London to Sydney rally? 1800s are known for their shell’s strength. I’m guessing it was a marketing decision, with the Maxi being a newer product, but I’ve not found anything that mentions this.
