Audi 100 / 200 / 5000 (C2) 1976-1983
This 2nd generation Audi 100 was launched in 1976, initially as conventional four door saloon only before it was joined a few months later in 1977 by Audi’s first Avant model (which, at that time, was not a traditional estate car but a five door hatchback saloon to compete with similar premium rival fastbacks such as the four door Citroen CX and Lancia Gamma and especially the five door Renault 20/30, Rover SD1 and Saab 900). This C2 generation not only replaced the previous C1 Audi 100 but also the NSU Ro80: it also gave birth to the posher Audi 200 which was Audi’s first serious attempt at being recognised as a premium car maker, helped also by the introduction of their first 5 cylinder engine (the only 5 cylinder petrol engine used in passenger cars at the time of introduction). This generation was marketed as Audi 5000 in the US where it was offered with 5 cylinder engines only.
In addition to the versions I posted above Audi also built a small number of two door saloons for select markets, this is now included in the poll above (facelifted version shown below)
