[ANSWERED] Huge control input issues in FH4 demo on PC

I installed and ran the demo today to see if this new instalment ran better on my PC than the previous one, and I was happy to find that it did run very smoothly, so good job on optimization so far in my opinion.
The controls however need some serious work.
When using my controller (DualShock 4 through DS4Windows which translates DS4 inputs into XBox360 controller inputs), it’s like the game decides at random every half second whether stepping on the gas or brakes means I should have no steering input, or whether steering left or right means it should just cancel out my gas or brake input.
Like the game can’t handle multiple inputs at once, and none of the face buttons other than the D-Pad do anything.
So I tried using my keyboard to make sure it wasn’t my controller setup causing the problem, but I had the exact same problem using keyboard controls, except with a little twist.
On the keyboard W as the gas pedal doesn’t seem to be a continuous input like holding down right trigger on my controller is, so every time I had done some sort of steering input with A or D, I would have to release W and press it down again to get any throttle.

I definitely hope this works better once the game actually comes out.

Nice to know i’m not alone. Had to drive through demo with a keyboard, horrible experience. I hope this will be fixed and work just like FH3 or any other Forza because i don’t want to be forced either to play on keyboard or to buy a Xbox controller which is totally uncomfortable for me.

its happening with me on the keyboard too

I sadly couldn’t even play it on keyboard, it was even worse than on my controller.

Not sure my issue is the same but I am also having issues with a USB controller. My game doesnt seem to want to make the controller the primary device for more then 3 seconds at a time. That and while the controls clearly say the left stick is for steering when I use the left stick it turns my view to the left and right. Sometimes when I move the stick down and to the left or right a little it will steer the car but this is not functioning like intended or even usable at this point.

I really wanted to see how the game felt with controller not mouse and keyboard.

Alright, yesterday after playing some Project CARS 2 with my wheel and pedals, I decided to try out the Forza Horizon 4 demo with my trusty old Logitech G25 setup.

While the controls did seem to actually work as intended, as in I could use the gas pedal, brake pedal and turn the wheel all at once and the game didn’t seem to have any inputs override the others, I did notice that the force feedback was much more liberally applied than I remembered it being in Forza Horizon 3 (I would describe FFB in FH3 as practically non-existent).
While I consider this overall stronger force feedback an improvement, it also made it completely clear to me that whoever programmed the force feedback for FH4 has fundamentally misunderstood the entire concept.
I can deal with there not being any road feel in particular, I don’t expect detailed physics mapping of little bumps and cracks in the asphalt on a large open world map.
My main issue is when the force feedback is applied.
When a car in the real world and in actual driving simulators like Project CARS 2, rFactor 2, iRacing or Assetto Corsa, starts sliding or oversteering, the laws of physics will universally push the front wheels (and in turn the steering wheel) towards a counter-steer so that the car self-rights, even if I just let go of the wheel (unless the slide is too great for that alone to be enough).

When any car in the Forza Horizon 4 demo starts sliding or oversteering to even the slightest degree, I suddenly have to struggle AGAINST the force feedback in order to FORCE the wheels to counter-steer, this coupled with the fact that I have to apply counter-steering much more drastically than the initial steering input that caused the oversteer in the first place, makes dirt races pretty much impossible with wheel and pedals.
I’m pretty sure I have to turn the wheel at least 4 times as much to counter-steer as I steered in the opposite direction to turn, just to even have a sliver of a chance to catch a slide, which becomes troublesome when the counter-steering inevitably overcorrects and I then have to struggle against the force feedback again to counter-steer the counter-steer.

In short, your force feedback is a complete mess, and I recommend whoever programs it for you try out some sims where the force feedback is done right and then try the stuff they’ve made to compare.

Only just tried the Demo today, with my G25 the feedback is ok, not sure if demo has had update since you posted.

Only issue I noticed on Demo is that steering in cars only uses 90 degrees left and right, hope full game actually uses more than that.
Also even though I selected the G25 setup, why does game keep telling me to hit button 12 to continue etc, when it is actually button 7, also a button 22 mentioned which is not even present on a G25.

If you try to setup a Custom Wheel, ie input your own control layout, it will not save if you do not assign everything, in which case you cannot do any custom controller that has less than 30 or more buttons.

Controls still don’t work for me on my controller or my keyboard, and the force feedback is just completely wrong, so I’m not exactly happy to have to use my wheel and pedals.
I’d hoped this would be fixed in the demo by now, so I’d feel more confident in buying the Ultimate Edition tomorrow, but alas it is not fixed… it still doesn’t work.
It’s a shame, my DS4 worked perfectly with Forza Horizon 3 through DS4Windows, but for some reason it just doesn’t work with this FH4 demo.

Hi Everyone,

We are currently investigating the PS4 Controller issue. Please check out our support pages for information and updates.

Thank you

Hi guys.

I found a temporary solution. You need to close DS4Windows and disable the NVIDIA In-Game Overlay. Then start DS4Windows and check Hide DS4 Controller. This should fix the problem, as it did for me. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Enzdude

Sadly this didn’t work for me at all, I uninstalled the nVidia GeForce experience completely just to be sure, started up DS4Windows, checked “Hide DS4 Controller” and launched the game.
In this configuration I got no input recognition at all, as in the game didn’t even switch to controller button prompts when I pressed any buttons, the same as when I don’t run DS4Windows at all.

This is ridiculous that they have not solved this yet its not even listed on there known bugs like what a joke

[ANSWERED] but not [SOLVED] unfortunately.

I’m on PC using the Xbox controller and having what feels like engine trouble.
With the throttle full on it cuts in and out usually about half way up the rev range… just like a big flat spot on an engine.

I was using the triggers and thought maybe the trigger was faulty but reconfigured to the right stick instead and exactly the same issue.

I’m glad at least that I’m not the only one with this type of input issue, so I’m hopeful this gets [SOLVED] quickly.

I just blew 200 on a setup and the game and here i am not able to have good game-play. My controller inputs dont work half the time its like the game is trying to keep inputting what i am putting once it makes the game unplayable and is really giving me droughts considering the game has been out for how long and still no fix

I am having the issue with my Xbox One Elite Controller and a normal Xbox One Controller.

The controller worked fine for the first 6 hours I played the game on a fresh install.
Only Forza Horizon 4 is having issues. Other games such as War Thunder and Call of Duty WWII are both working fine.
It wouldn’t be as big of an issue but I just recently purchased an Xbox One Elite Controller and was excited to use it with this game.

It will glitch out every time you go to use the controller (push buttons), like it thinks keyboard and mouse should be used.
It will begin as keyboard icons (either in the menu, or on the onscreen HUD, under the map):

[ENTER] will flicker to (A)
[ESCAPE] will flicker to (B)… and so on.

When you are in the car view, the animation of turning the steering wheel left and right is completely glitched out and unable to fluidly turn left and right.
I am unable to even use the controller at this point.
It will randomly work and I can turn all the way left but then I am unable to turn the controller right.
Reverse is glitching out where it randomly brakes instead of reversing when fully pulling and holding the trigger.

I am confused why only Forza Horizon 4 is unable to tell what input device you want to use, and stick with it. Or, have the option to keep the button animations locked into either controller, or M&K.
I am scratching my head on this one, as I have never encountered a bug of this type.
Either the controller worked, or it wasnt detected and wouldnt even partially register. Or if it did partially register, it was because something wasnt plugged in all the way, low on batteries…

Hello,
im here the same problem, playing on xbox360 wireless controller, hope this will be fixed soon or theres an solution. at this moment the game is unplayable and 50€ are for the garbage:(

Wow, i think i found a fix. I turned of Nvidia overlay, didnt helped. Both my keyboard and my emulated logitech gamepad via xOutput was bugged. Controller as descried by several ppl in this post and my key board was getting outages, delays and every time i turned it also braked(no lights) but was making skidmarks. it was impossible to steer without losing speed significantly. BUt then i turned off my Corsair software and keyboard is working OK !!! my emulated controller is still bugged but at least i can play on keyboard. Hope this helps. Also i turned off steam but none of it helped until i turned off keyboard software.

For me it worked perfectly fine until the first time I restarted the game. I got past the intro and first actual race without an issue, restarted the game to adjust my settings and the keyboard started glitching, I cant press more than one key at a time. turning the settings back and restarting made no difference. Im running a Dell Bigfoot so there isnt any software to turn off. Any ideas on how to fix it? I was really enjoying that.

its also important to kill every other SW that doesnt have to run. for example my VPN also cause it to not work properly. try some wired keyboard, cheap one with no sw. that could work, but thats just my guess. This is my 1st Forza game ever and im really enjoying it, but i cant understand how company like MS can let this unsolved for so long O.o. Coming from games like PUBG and other alfas, they sort such a major bugs like this in few hours, days…maybe 2-3 weeks.
