So, I’m looking for a bit of inspiration here.
I’ve been bit by the drifting bug. Really, really hard. Up at four in the morning, yadda yadda. Problem is, that I’m looking for any and all sections I can practice on - I’m even considering starting runs through the whole of Nurburgring for the sake of making a replacement for the now-missing Fujimi Kaido. That aside, I’m also looking for advice regarding things such as dealing with Turbo Lag in certain cars (RX-7, RB engines in general, and an MR2 to name a few). I’m aware that keeping the RPM out of range of the lag will somewhat do the job, but I’d like some outside input.
In short, lookin’ for information regarding the following:
- Drift vehicle builds, styles regarding using setups with certain aspirations (Turbo, Supercharger, and the actual noticeable differences aside from Turbo lag for mostly “typical” japanese cars)
- Sections that I can practice on to improve myself on aside from Long Beach, Lime Rock, Nurburgring GP, Silverstone National, Nurburgring Nordschleife, Circuit de Catalunya, Rio de Janeiro Mini, Road Atlanta, Circuit of the Americas, so on, so forth.
- Drifting techniques. While this is a little vague, I’m moreso talking about things like using the e-brake in lieu of clutch kicking for initiation, tips for how to properly manage the differential locking (i’ve recently starting tuning my rear differential to 100% for all cars to imitate a welded diff) and other things that I’ll probably think of later.
- Tuning, such as the actual relation to toe-in/toe-out to camber, caster, and how a stiffer suspension will interact with the cars behaviour while starting a drift as well as holding it, in comparison to a softer set.
There’s probably more to add to this list, and I’ll probably add onto it later. But any and all input would be great - just trying to increase my knowledge as much as possible. Thanks!
Oh Cody, Cody, Cody…
I’m sure me and Jedge can hook you up with some sections… We’ve got a list as long as our arm on sections to run, and continuously looking for more. We’ll get in a lobby at some point this week and just do track after track looking for new sections, i’m sure we’ll come up with some dope sections. Did we show you the secret one yet?
As for the turbo lag issue, you can try shortening your gears so you spend more time at the top of your revs, dropping some smaller cams into the car and fitting smaller turbos so there isn’t a gap in the boost or going N/A.
I don’t think you have to worry too much about tuning/drifting styles. You’re a sick drifter and you know it. If you want to hone your skills though, you can change each part by a medium-large amount to see how differently it behaves. Small incremants are only really useful if you know the ball-park figure you’re used to but that particular car requires it to be slightly different. Bigger alterations are more noticeable so you can find that ball-park easier. Just try as many different ‘styles’ of tuning and see which ones feel easier to drift. I usually have quite soft suspension and low camber/toe numbers, but i have one car that drifts much better stiff and higher camber/toe numbers.
Sections for nurburg there is a few, add me and ill get in a game and show you any i can think of.
As for keeping cars out of the lag zone, run low pressure turbos ie stock or street turbo, and have a final drive biased towards acceleration.
You know where i am if you need any other help.
In the search bar of this forum, look up the keyword “drift” with my name and read what I wrote to other people asking the same questions. Most of your questions will be answered.
Practice on Lime Rock, Catalunya, Indianapolis (the third track), any Bernese Alps track, and Mazda Raceway. You will learn a lot on these tracks, seriously. I build most of my tunes on these tracks.
Good Luck!
Brands Hatch is one of my personal favorite tracks. Use the Indy circuit.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be too concerned with drifting dedicated sections. Just drift tracks, get car control down (or at least decent car control) then worry about that.
