Why Turn 10 still use 2d wheel models?

Ok I’m nitpicking (a lot), but it’s ridiculous how turn 10 dares to use this “feature” for no reason in broad 2014

The game runs fine without changing the full modeled wheels to those low res sprites (the 3d models are there when the car is at very low speeds), Instead of using motion blur effects on the wheels they prefer to switch (abruptly) to those sprites that are solid like a dish, it even don’t cast shadows nor reflections

For those that don’t know what I’m blabbering about, here are some pics:

Not convinced? here, there’s an uglier 2d model:

Is this some kind of joke?? Unfortunately it isn’t (you can try it yourself, there are wheels worse than others)

Games back in 2000 used this to save memory (cpu process, buffer memory, Ram, whatever) , which it is completely useless, because the wheels can be rendered without effort when the car is at low speeds.

We are in 2014 guys!! this is not necessary anymore, it really ruins the graphics, it’s my second time creating a thread complaining about it, the other time was with FM4, and I thought that turn 10 would fix it in the new generation, Well, I was wrong.

That’s what I have to say, I hope you guys from Turn 10 read this complaints and do something about it. ( if necessary, I can post a video)

Thanks for the attention, and sorry for my bad english

They have likely done this to save frames. Rendering the detail of the 3D wheels at different speeds, with different lighting effects and reflections, would probably eat up some processing power; thus, lower frames. In case you were unaware, Turn 10 Studios is very serious about holding Forza Motorsport titles to 60 FPS.

In my opinion, it is a smart decision. Who is looking at wheel detail while racing? Besides you, of course. Heh. Just giving you a hard time.

Shouldn’t you be watching the cars in front of you instead of admiring their rims at 100mph?

I agree with everyone else, this seems like a very good way to save resources to help render high res textures (at 60 fps) on more important items. They are going to have to find more corners to cut on FM6 if the are going to add dynamic weather and/or lighting. I would not expect this to change on the next Forza either since nobody is looking at wheels while racing (in any view) This is really only impacting replays and most will never notice. At least I didn’t. But if I did, I can’t say I even care.

Not necessarily. They’ll just have to get better at coding assets and managing resources. Look at how much graphical improvement there is between Forza Motorsport 2 and 4. It’s just a matter of getting more familiar and efficient with the new hardware.

Were kind of saying the same thing. You just have a more positive way of saying it. (coding assets and managing resources = cutting corners). The resources & processing power on the 360 didn’t improve from FM2 to FM4, but through time Turn 10 found areas where they could save or re-capture system resources and put those resources to use elsewhere to improve physics and graphics. Using lower res wheels is certainly one of the tricks they use. Dan G even said about FM5 - that dynamic day / night is possible but it would require more time than they had since they’d have to figure out where the required resources could be pulled from.

so thats why theres so many bad drivitards out there!?

because the drivers are busy looking at the wheels of the cars along side them instead of the cars infront of them!?

now it makes sense :stuck_out_tongue:

No offence but I agree. We are supposed to be on next gen and yet still there are little things that havent been improved from previous gen. This is a nxt gen sim right? So why do wheels look like fm2 when you drive. Why does your designs look blurred in game? Why do seats look like pixelated cardboard in some cars? Why do all v8s sound the same when they dont in realife hence musclecar vs c63 amg. Biggest of all why does the r35 gtr handle worst then a tuned honda civic afterall the gtr is one of the best handling roadcars ever…? There are lots more I can think of but some of the community frustrate me with there carefree attitude. You all want new cars and tracks and graze on t10 when you get them yet there are dashboarding problems, gamers losin cars and downloadin issues that needsfixing amongst other stuff. Also why bring another game out fh2 when they havent even fixed this game yet. It makes no sense. T10 are money making on our expense and dont listen to us. And this wheel 2d thing does matter when you have got your mates round and your trying to show how beautiful forza on nxt gen xbox looks only to see a zr1 vette slide into a corner on 2d wheels. Its looks ugly. And before people post a comment sayin why by the game… im a long time forza that was led by others into thinkin this is the best forza ever. How wrong hey… sorry for the rant guys but its needs addressing

I still don’t see how the rims being 2D while the car is driving at 100mph+ is an issue…I didn’t even notice the 2D rims till this thread appeared and now I know, I still don’t care

APU…

I don’t know why there are people defending Turn10, this technique sucks, it will not save memory to the point of doing miracles on physics or wathever

when racing, sometimes i like to rotate the camera around my car, to admire the graphics, and guess what??

Not funny at all

Nobody is defending Turn 10. You asked for a reason why the wheel modeling is like this and a few of us have provided the probable answer. If you really have an issue with it, as suggested: contact Turn 10 directly at forzafb@microsoft.com.

If they are using it is because its needed, simple logic.

As a painter I do like watching replays very much. The 2d wheel thing is annoying for me. Any car modifier/customiser will tell you the biggest single change you can make to a cars looks are the wheels. FM does seem to be talented at providing multicolour bin lids…

Yep. The graphics have been completely ruined because of this. I can’t even look at the game - its so ugly. Unbelievable. Get your act together T10, it’s absolutely disgusting how you even dare do this to us.

In fact - I think I might even write a strongly worded email of complaint to forzafb@microsoft.com. THEN something shall be done about this mess.

Whole game. Ruined.
