Wheel vs Controller

Been using a wheel for some time now, and have come to the conclusion the controller can make any car perform impossible maneuvers the wheel can’t. On the strait away at LeMans, I see vehicles going sideways and on 2wheels at 200Mph. That can not be done with a wheel, or a real car, for that matter. There are some other tricks I’ve observed which are impossible too, and they’re using a controller. Either way, I’ll never go back to the controller. The thrustmaster wheel is awesome and so real.

Cool story!

but the wheel is still faster, its a lot harder to be smooth with a controller.

Proof?

This topic has been done to death. There are controller users with #1 times and if you watch them you would think they were using a wheel as it looks smooth. Other times you can tell its a controller.

There is no evidence that I am aware of that suggests the top end of the leaderboard is dominated by wheel users. Even if it was it could just be that the people who spend most time with the game and are therefore good also spend the most money on their input device.

But as far as I know there is not a large number of wheel users at the top end of the leaderboards.

@ OP - when you say you see cars on two wheels do you mean online? If so it could be lag. Or do you mean in replays ?

It definitely has been beat to death and unfortunately, there are no professional drivers (or not enough) who are actually so good at racing with a wheel, that they get paid for it, who are also running LB times or even playing a video game. That being said, the number of people who use a wheel are not comparable to those who use the controller. Those who use the wheel may have been doing it for several years, but it’s just easier to pick up a controller. Plus, not everyone can afford a wheel setup to play a video game. So there may be some wheel racing savants out there who don’t have the opportunity to become a LB time setter, or professional race car driver.

Racing with a wheel takes a far different amount of ability than a controller, yet both of them can take a long time to master. But it is just plain easier with a controller to get going that fast.

I don’t have a way to prove it atm, but when you are fighting for that extra tenth, hundredth, or thousandth of a second, smoother inputs make all the difference. The thumbstick isn’t the ideal control for steering.

Some people have excellent thumb agility. Therefore the controller could be and likely is ideal to some.

I used the wheel on FM4 and most of my times were in the 1500 - 500 ranking on leaderboard, and on FM5 I’m using the pad and I’m getting the same results. It just takes time to adjust to what you’re using. If you know the lines then it doesnt matter what you’re using after you adjust.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I’m still seeing cars in the multiplayer lounges on different tracks making maneuvers impossible with a wheel are any real car for that matter. So be it. The controller users still have the ability to make their cars do incredible things. But I’ll stick to my wheel and have fun.

You can add me too! I love racing with other people with a wheel!!

I prefer to game laying down and the controller is perfect for that. I used a wheel for a little while, but it turned play into work for me. My times didn’t vary much with either device.

whats the best wheel to get

A wheel is faster IMO. Why? The inputs are much smoother which can take off multiple tenths. Both the Controller and Wheel, to me, are equally as hard to use, it’s just personal preference.
And yes, the reason why you don’t see many people No. #1 with a wheel is due to the cost of a wheel set. The chances, from what I’ve found, between coming across a driver who is using a wheel, you’ll probably find 1 driver out of 100 who are using a wheel.
If you go back to FM3, the wheel was VERY good. With AWD being the best option, it didn’t require skill in terms of throttle control. It came down to who was getting the cleanest and smoothest line, hence why the wheel was very good.
But we all are free to choose what we want, wheel or not, as long as your having fun (Without making others annoyed) choose what you want… but we would all love a wheel tbh!

I guess what it comes down to is that you need to run well handling cars with a wheel. I can run the ERS Celica on a controller no problem. With a wheel I might as well be driving on oil. I love the wheel
(thrustmaster tx) but I can’t expect to get below 500 on a board.

im faster with a pad. i drive aggressive and I cannot correct over steer as quickly with a wheel.
