Here’s some really interesting tech information for the great GTHO lovers out there. This is about the various colours, and even though Turn 10 have only listed 12 I think, ??
They even got some details about the Holden really wrong with its production date, hope the same doesn’t happen with other various vehicles… Anyhow…
There in in fact 16 and came in very small numbers. There was only ONE Black GTHO Phase III ever build by Ford Australia. There were some very interesting colours that would probably NEVERTHELESS been seen in mags or anywhere, as the list will explain.
The GTHO and GTs came with 3-5 different coloured striping packages as standard, explained later in the post. Plus an alloy badge on the front gaurd just behind the front wheel arch and on the rear of the bootlid. GT High Performace 351. The Phase III. (and its siblings from the XR, XT, XW), which were actual GTs, as there were TWO. Versions. The GT, and the Special Order GTHO Phase III.
The stripes were:-
Black
Orange
Silver
White
Red
But please note, due to the very VERY scarse nature of some of the GTHOs, the well known stripes are the most common naturally. So some will say there’s just one, some say three, while some know that due to the 15 colours, more than 3 coloured stripes were needed, obviously.
The Phase IIIs were an optional package and were known as “Shakers”, due to the fact that the air cleaner had a very smooth finned black air intake extending out the bonnet due to the semi high rise manifold compared the the GTs lower intake manifold. On idle, it literally shook like crazy as the Cam on the Phase III was quite lumpy.
There were only 500 real Phase IIIs built from the factory, while the GTs had a little over 1200 odd made during their limited production run.
There were in fact, 16 factory colours for the GTHO Phase III, plus the the GTs of the same year. The GTHO stood for GT with the high Horsepower Option. As they were VERY similar actually.
Colours listed below include their actual Dulux Paint Factory Paint codes and are marked as ‘S’ which denotes Solid Paint, and are listed first.
The next list have ‘M’ which denotes Metalic Paint. Additionally, some went by some more commonly known names. Which over the years has caused much confusion with owners, novices, or those with enough pennies to rebuild theirs from a wreck. But those wouldn’t be “Originals” as there were only as little as ONE car made in certain colours.
The VERY last number indicates the ACTUAL number of cars made by Ford.

I trust this helps ppl know more about one of our iconic high performance vehicles. The GTHO Phase III was ranked as THE most powerful production motor vehicle ever produced. Even the last Ford X XR8 GT, also only a run of 500 were made, has similar ponies, but the current iteration runs the power torque curve much longer. While the Phase III was just a brute power horse.
Anyhow, enjoy, and use the info to paint replicas of the real cars please.
It’s what I’ll be doing with my Phase III.
Enjoy… OZ
