Has anyone else tried chopping off their brand new (telemarketing) headset for the Xbox one to attach a male 2.5mm plug to use with their turtle beach headset?
I was getting really annoyed trying to game late at night with my turtle beaches (to not annoy my gf with squeeling tires and the like) and the Xbox one headset around my neck to talk. It was an okay setup but not the most comfortable.
After checking out a few instructables and other tutorials, I went to Canadian tire and bought a $30 soldering iron and got to work. Its as easy as cutting off the headset right near the speaker or disassembling the unit (if you disassemble you get the benefit of having the tiny wires already stripped of the coating) and cutting off 2.5mm male plug right under the mute/volume controls of an Xbox 360 headset (or you can use the turtle beach wire itself but I wanted to keep that) and soldering the wires together. After that I shrink tubed the connections and taped them individually before taping them in one bundle for added protection against the echo some people are getting.
I used the 360 slim headset and it has the added advantage of using the exact same wire colours.
I did have the echo problem at first, when someone talked it would echo and sound choppy, but in upload studio (to test since there aren’t voice messages anymore) my voice sounded crystal clear.
I decided I must have a bad connection so I cut out the speaker connection I made and re-soldered it, now it works just like factory and I can still use the handy mute and volume on the stock Xbox one headset puck (the thing that goes into the controller). Everyone else hears me clearly, I hear them clearly, and my house stays quiet.
Just wanted to post this in case someone else cant wait for the adapter like me.
You can post here or send me a message on xbl if you want help or need to troubleshoot.
Which Turtle Beach Headset did you so this for? I have the Turtle Beach XP510 headset and was wondering about doing the same thing. I use my Bluetooth adaptor for Xbox 360 and I am hoping they come up with the same thing for the Xbox One controller because then I won’t need a wire at all.
I did it on the x12 which is a wired one. There is a tutorial on how to do it with the Bluetooth adapter but it’s a lot more invasive. Are the xp510’s the ones with the input for a wired connection on the bottom of one side of the headset? You could use that for now and that would be a lot easier. I really hope ms makes the adapter soon, I want to get the new x7 (the wireless one?) So I don’t have to have wires running everywhere.
Might be worth a look but here in the u.k we have people on ebay who will take your ms headset and do the rewiring for you (for those who are useless with that kinda stuff like me) for around £18/$25 or you can have one ready made and shipped for around £40/$60 (currency conversion is rough guess not accurate) so the same price for the work plus cost of new ms headset basically…ive been seriously considering this as that basic headset is soo uncomfortable then in theory I can plug the tb into my tv 3.5mm for game audio and in the controller for chat…right?
Yes it does have a wire available and a place for it on the headset. I won’t do anything to the Bluetooth adapter because its good for so many other devices too, but rewiring the cord is something I will consider. I have experience with electronics so it’s not a problem now that I know it can be done.
Exactly, I kept the original chat cable so I could use it with the 360 still.
If you do end up doing rewiring the cord, don’t connect the black wire to anything. Most tutorials mention this but some don’t so I thought I’d mention it.
Just noticed last night that there’s feedback (like a buzzing/humming sound) through the turtle beach when the controller is being charged, minor annoyance.
Just an update; i started to hear an echo of others voices so I tried to redo the mod. I decided to do the more durable version where you solder the the cable directly to the board but my $35 soldering iron wasn’t heating up evenly and I think I got the surrounding pieces on the board too hot, making it stop working entirely.
I knew there was a good chance this would happen but i cant help but be a little bit mad. I wish I had bought a better soldering iron as well, I think it would’ve helped a lot.
I don’t like being totally cut off online so I haven’t played much multiplayer lately but I ordered a set of turtle beach xo fours and they’re supposed to be shipping around the middle of march according to turtle beach. I guess MS finally got the adapter sorted out thank god.
My set of x12’s were getting pretty old anyways so i cant wait to get the xo fours. There are some things about them I don’t quite understand though, like how it says it is “wireless to the Xbox one console” and on their forums a moderator has posted countless times that the headset plays whatever the controller outputs to it.
I’m assuming the headset isn’t powered in any way because you can use it as headphones on a mobile device as well.
I also soldered an adapter I made directly to the controller board, with two contacts coming out; one for the sound and one for the mic. As my current headset also has two contacts this works great, but since I am connected to the controller only I get no game sound. I then made an adapter to merge the sound from the controller and the sound from my stereo into one contact for sound in on my headset. The other was still used as a mic.
This also worked but now the sound is much lower!?! I checked every contact twice but everything looked fine. When I connect either the stereo or the controller to the headset, the sound is loud and clear. Connecting both the sound level sinks after one second? I now have to put my stereo on max to get normal game sound when chatting, and I was hoping some producer of headsets can work around this problem.
Can you get game sound using the Turtles? There are no game sound coming to the controller, is it? So will there be an extra plug to connect to the stereo?
The x12’s, and maybe the wireless ones too but I’m not sure though, can be connected to a TV/stereo with either rca (red/white plugs) or if your TV has a headphone jack you could plug that in.
The rca plugs have an input on one end and an output at the other so I have the rca cables into the TV, then into the turtle beach plugs, and then that into my stereo. At the other end of that adapter is a 3.5mm female headphone jack that you plug the green 3.5mm male on the turtle beach side into. The x12’s also have a pink plug which is the mic cable for if you want to use it on a pc, and a usb plug to power it.
That’s how I had it for the 360 as well so it would output whatever the TV is playing.
I’m not sure but I think you would need to fix your adapter to use the turtle beaches as well (or maybe fix your current setup). You should have a mic, speaker, and ground cable. The ground usually a looks like a bare copper wire with no insulation but usually has a clear coating you should burn off. The turtle beach needs a 2.5mm male end coming off the board to hook into the headset for chat.
