Training for Newbs again

This is the Forza where I really got into cockpit view. I’m not saying I don’t appreciate the chase view, I agree with Eduardo. Sometimes at the beginning of a race or in parts where it’s tight with lots of cars around me I will switch to chase so I can see better and avoid colliding.

Some people dont half make up some rubbish excuses…its easy you select the options you yourself feel comfortable with and drive…after all practice makes perfect…
Theres far too many people who think they are better than they actually are…Noobs for examlpe is just exploiting someone who is just starting out, but everyone has to start somewhere otherwise how would we ever learn…
Its just a fact of life everyone is different and only in a perfect world would Forza work well…thats why you choose your freinds and fows alike.
It doesnot matter how many tutorials you have the majority are still going too exploit the games weak points to which Forza 5 has many.

drive (play) with experienced people online, they will give you tips about driving and so on. people won’t bite you, they will be glad to help you! (not all, but the most of them)
everyone is (was) starting with less experience… it is like in real life…

there are enough games out now most of the trolls will have moved on to other games. most wrecks now are the result of poor driving and people wanting to win, trained by single player to try to force their way from last to 1st in two laps. their goal is to be faster, finish higher. wrecks slow both cars down and lets every other car on the track get farther ahead or catch back up. if you could teach them how to do it without wrecking most would. you would be giving them a more successful way of reaching the goal. there are planes with two pedals, a stick and a throttle. most people would still wreck them. they wouldn’t be trying to wreck/die, they just dont know how not to other than dont fly. thats why people take pilots lessons. lessons work. they help people master skills much faster than trial and error. it takes much less time to do it right the 1st time than the hundredth time.

ask lou. yes he was improving on his own, but he improved faster when people helped him out and explained things to him, pointed out mistakes he didn’t see and how to lower lap times by slowing down at the proper place. racing relaxed is a big part of performance, and you cant be relaxed with trial and error. its too stressful.

All true. I only just a few weeks ago started to run some races in public lobbies. (I’ve only raced in private leagues since FM4) I expected a ton of crashers in the public lobby. There were some, but I may have only seen a handful that seemed to crash on purpose. I only reported 2 out of the hundreds I raced with. The rest of the crashes seemed to be caused by people making dumb mistakes - clearly from a lack of practice.

(I was somewhat surprised by the will to win though by almost everyone! I expected the slower drivers to be more cautions and try not to piss off the fast guys but instead I was shocked to see so many slower drivers cut every corner on Yas Marina! - and even more surprised that it worked! I had heard it was a bad track for cutting corners but nobody I race would would cut corners like that on purpose so somehow I didn’t expect to see this… very naive I suppose.)

At this point, I generally leave the lobby if Yas comes up. The only people who seem to like Yas are the cheaters who know they can cut the corners. Combine that with the fact that it is not a fun track to drive (in my opinion), it’s pretty much on my personal MP ban list.

IMO part of the problem is these “Noobs” just jumping straight into MP hoppers. I’ve been in many hoppers since the xbox one went to $399 that were all lower ranked people, even just last night out of 15 people there was 3 level 1’s and only 2 people above level 50(those 2 being my buddy and I at 900+). And I know some of you are going to say that driver level does not = skill and I agree with that but it lets you gauge how many hours they have put into the game. You should not be able to race online til you are at a certain driver level, maybe 75-100.

Also I feel these forums are partly the cause of some of the bad/poor driving going on in MP hoppers(not including crashers). Some noob gets smoked the whole night in hoppers, so the next day they look up on the forums how to be faster. Most common answer is turn off the assists, use man trans, no trac blah blah blah. So now this noob driver gets even worse sliding all over the track and paying more attention to shifting than the race line. I have many top 200-500 times and I use everything except auto brake and assisted steering and all those are set in MP hoppers. Here is a prime example, - YouTube , you can see him starting to learn the track somewhat by the last 2 laps but he does not need to be trying to learn the tracks and man trans at the same time in a MP hopper.

I wouldn’t say level 75 - 100. That’s a bit too high. Imagine all the people who have played other racing games or other Forza games and want to get into multiplayer. I think, since you know the game can see your Forza history at least, it could look at your past history and make a determination. In the end, turn 10 does not want to alienate players simply for being new to their franchise because that is bad business.

Yes, this whole paragraph is true. What is the issue though is that common sense seems to be lacking more so now than it has in the past. If you don’t know the track, can’t drive with all assists on and stay on the track, you don’t turn all the assists off to go faster. You start by staying on the track and doing some freeplay slowly. Do you think the pros go out and blast PRs on their first lap??? When learning, the first thing you do is drive the track slowly to learn the track, then you do some lead and follow to learn the best racing line, and then you slowly start adding speed to learn what your limits are. THEN you turn off traction control, stability control, and lastly, ABS.

What OP is saying, isn’t going to happen in the game, probably ever. What can be done, is that we can make a thread that can hopefully be stickied, that outlines the important things he wants the tutorials to teach.

I am beginning to believe there is no good and simple way to add a tutorial. However, there needs to be a way to train new drivers. It has to be completely optional. Let me describe my experience with Forza Motorsport.

The first version I played was Forza Motorsport 5 on the Xbox One. I can’t describe how bad I was. I then bought Forza Motorsport 4 for the Xbox 360. I didn’t have much better of an experience. A clerk at GameStop recommended I try Forza Motorsport 2. I bought it and tried it out. I tried some of the arcade races. You had to start on simple tracks using D cars before unlocking more tracks. I started to get a feel for the game. I then started the career races. I started on the proving grounds with D cars. Again, I was horrible. I could win but I wasn’t driving well. I won enough money to buy a C car and race it against the D cars on the proving grounds. In Forza Motorsport 2 some races allowed you to race any car you wanted even if the opponents were all D cars. Once I got the C car and was racing against D cars on the proving I started to understand the game. I learned how to keep that C car on the track. The races were short. I would guess 2 minutes but I was learning and earning money. I applied what I learned to Forza Motorsport 5. I had become a much better driver. There is nothing like the proving grounds in version 5. I have picked up copies of Forza Motorsport, Forza Motorsport 3 and Forza Horizon. I have to say I like the career mode in versions 1 and 2 the best. The career mode in versions 3 and 4 are good. The career mode in version 5 is poor compared to the other versions.

The message from all of this is: I learned how to drive in Forza Motorsport 5 by playing the earlier versions, especially version 2.

How can version 6 improve on version 5 to allow new users to learn quicker? Here is my latest idea. Have 4 modes of play, Proving Grounds, Career, Time Trials, Free Play, and Rivals.

Free Play would be the same as it is in version 5. You can race any car you want on any track you want. If you don’t own the car, you can rent it.

Rivals would be the same as version 5.

Career mode would be a career mode similar to versions 3 and 4. I know I said I liked the career mode in versions 1 and 2 better but the Proving Grounds mode would take care of this.

Proving Grounds would be a series of short races on progressive harder courses and progressive better cars. All of these races could probably be run on the Top Gear test track. You could race any car you owned on them. Your starting position would be based on the PI of your car. If you were racing a A class car against D class cars, you would start in the pole position. You would earn small amounts of money for these races.

Time Trials would be similar to the arcade mode in earlier versions. You would be given a car to drive with predetermined updates. You could tune the car but that is all. You would then do laps on a predetermined course and try to beat a group of set times. The slowest time to beat should be beatable with all assists on. The times to beat would get harder to beat requiring assists to be turn off.

I think implementing something wouldn’t be too hard for Turn 10 to do. Again, I would appreciate any feedback.

Jim, you’re chronicling your tuning experience. Perhaps you can put something together to help out these people you speak of and post it here. If it gets stickied, everyone will see it.

I found this in my wardrobe. After removing the cobwebs…

Contents:

  1. Outside-Inside-Outside Cornering
  2. Late and early Apexing
  3. Finding the line to maximize speed
  4. Setting up the pass
  5. Blocking the pass

Part 1 of FM even included Drivatar Lessons showing you the correct path to navigate the turns correctly. Instruction Manual pages 18-19.

I found it all very helpful at the time. Maybe FM6 could do a copy paste of FM1 to help out new players.
