I’m going to keep my opinions to myself around here anymore, but still wanna stay active in the community, and what better way to do that? Here’s a work in progress my wife wanted done! I’ll be happy to transfer the design when done to other cars upon request. Eventually the side will be an entire tink, but for now it’s just the head and as such isn’t available yet. Hopefully soon! My first attempt at a character, so any and all feedback/suggestions welcome!
(I know about the hair, saw it as soon as I uploaded this image to PC, that part is already fixed lol)
I got to work on her some more tonight and got the body mostly done. I’ve got to add some shading/highlighting and make the borders a bit darker as they don’t show as much as I would like on-car. Also the jaggies on the head are driving me insane, any tips from the pros on reducing that? I think it was because I made the head larger (for the roof logo) and reduced it significantly for the full body =/
Hope you guys/gals? enjoy!
BTW this car stock can barely climb the hill in prague, but the kids and wife sure do love to look at and drive it… I could just imagine the looks this would get in a drag lobby though LOL… maybe I need to transfer this to the new stradale? haha
Nice start mate, I can see why the kids like it…its fun! Like Janda said, just keep painting what you like, the challenges will come. As for this design…might I suggest that you thin down the calves/legs a bit as they are a somewhat out of proportion. Maybe in version two you can work on a handmade font for the name…it really adds so much to your overall design. Cheers bud, keep going!!
Thanks dood. I want to thin them down some for sure, but tink’s legs are huge! LOL. I think I can take a touch off the calves without losing the scale too much though, I’ll give it a shot and see how it comes out :). I will definitely plan to do a true “Tink” font at some point. That was a throw together at the last second to get the wife’s approval on overall design after 2 hours working on the last half of the body lol. (I’m still slow at this :P)
Any tips on shading and highlighting for more realism? That’s where I have the most trouble =/
Well Tiger, the shading technique differs from painter to painter and to say there is one way is a misnomer. For me, I like lighter shading…others are more profound. A few tips though…Pick an angle that you feel the light is coming from and shade lighter from that angle. Armpits, chests/breast, cheeks, body parts that are behind or in back are almost always darker. Make the fill color darker then lighten it up with a gradiant circle shape #28 with a transparency of 10 - 30. Work with the image enlarged for ease of application then check your work with the image reduced. The picture below shows the light coming from the upper left, front (she’s looking into it) so the artist shades the tops of the arms, shoulders, front of thighs, centertop of hair and so on…use this as a reference…Oh, and look at her calves
On shading its a trial and error, just experiment and see what you come up with…you have a great start. Just stay with it, try different things, challenge yourself!
This is close to the original image I worked from, lighting is a bit different, but it gets the idea across since I can’t find an online version of the original now, but as you can see on there her calves are almost as large as her thighs when seen from the side. That’s a trait more of the “old” tink vs. the modern tinkerbell. Either way, I do see some room I can trim them down to make her look more appropriately :).
Thanks for the link, I had read over that in the old forums but had been looking for it before taking on this project!
I got some shading done thanks to that thread and the tips here, also got the legs a little bit nicer :). What do you guys think? It made a huge difference to me, and my wife was shocked lol. I’ve still got to do a special “tink” font but this will do for now It will be up under share-front tomorrow under K1 : Cartoon K2: Character
haha, finally got this up on the share-front after fixing an issue I noticed from my post, (where all the eagle eyes at!?) Her left arm now goes through the bend above her elbow on the right as it should.
Enjoy it if you download it (so far none, but hey, the kids and wife love it, and that was what really mattered )
Aside from a custom tink font is there anything anybody else would like to see in a 2nd version of this paint? I’m thinking maybe some pixie dust strewn about instead of the almost firework artwork there now, maybe even a pixie hollow background? O_O
