This Game Has some of the worst AI imaginable

to be fair it took me well over 200 starts in multiplayer on bathurst before i had a race that got thru the 1st turn without a pile up. its not just drivatars. there are alot of people who try to win the race in the 1st turn because the races are so short its hard to go from last place to 1st in so few laps without contact.

we all wanted more cars on the track, we just wanted them on the track behind us. it didn’t work out that way. we didn’t fully think thru what we were asking for. imo the fix is longer races or fewer cars so people aren’t pressured to make up 15 spots in 2 laps on cold tires. it would get the same results in real life if cars repairs were free and there was no chance of injury with even pro drivers. yellow flags cause more yellow flags, and 2-3 laps is like a yellow flag restart.

Seriously, this 15 positions 3 lap race thing is ridiculous, especially on really tight circuits. I’m a clean racer, but when all the AI crash and bunch up in the first turn while 1st place is cruising along scott free is nuts. They should at least have a qualifying session to determine place before a race. Didn’t Forza 2 have that? I haven’t played it in so long I forgot.

There are 2 problems with the drivatars I see. Problem 1: The cars are built by the game, not by how you’re friends and others built them, they’re all horsepower and very little handling, which is why they walk away from you in the straights but crawl through the corners. Same way AI cars were built in previous Forzas and how the game will build your car if you let it. Problem 2: They have very little spacial awareness. I’ll be beside a car all the way down the straight, but we get to the corner and it tries to take the apex like I’m not even there. Or a car will go off track and will try to come right back to the racing line regardless of other traffic. My favorite though is when on the straight a car is so set on getting on the racing line it will literally shove my car off the track.

You hit all the points perfectly with what is wrong with some of the attributes of the drivatar. I have been t-boned from a car coming back on the track after leaving it. I also find that the AI cars are not affected much going off the track completely. They honestly should be programmed to allow the cars that are going to pass, pass like in a real race. You are also right on every car being built for power. They have all the information they need so I don’t know why drivatars are not 1 to 1 with your friends garage. I also feel like I do get pushed off the track when exiting the turn as the AI needs a huge radius to turn due to the way they are upgraded.

I sometimes will start a race after many restarts and have a car turn right into my car on a straight due to some glitch. There seems to be a glitch on Road America after excessive restarts where the AI will start driving half off the track in the grass. Anyway I really like the concept of the drivatar. It does beat cars driving mostly in a straight line, because cars in this game are anything but doing that, but I feel they were only half way done. They need to be more like the people they represent. Maybe I might be seeing problems with people who don’t have a 100% synced drivatar? Is the 100% sync mean they have a car they can use in every class for every track? I don’t know, but that’s what I would guess.

What about the players who do specific things?

My friend who has been the pain of all drivatars only does drift racing. But yet he shows up in all the races I’ve run, AND he gives me a run for my money. Whenever the two of us acutally race, he gets burnt like toast in a jammed toaster by me. I think the drivatars should be more specific. If a driver only does Autocross, then thats where you would see them. If they only run drift races, same thing. If they don’t own a specific type of car, they should not be in those races.

Definitely agree with those 2. I’ve also had AI cars in the grass out accelerate me coming out of a turn while still in the grass, this is/was on unbeatable difficulty, but physics is physics. Maybe their running studded tires? Drivatar behavior is probably “unfixable” at this point. But what should be fixable is starting position. Yes drivatar behavior sucks but why do i have to always start in 14th? Let me start in 2nd or third, or let me qualify first to see where I start.

Just be glad M Rossi is gone he was the bane of our existance for years.

Lmao. You have no idea how true that is.

Rossi was so bad even The Onion did an article referencing him. When The Onion calls you out, you know it’s something. Lol

I just got through playing GTA IV and the AI drivers in that game pay more attention then the drivers in Forza. They stop before hitting you and try to dodge if they can.

The only trend I have seen is if I choose a Leader Board car, and I drive well, (no skid marks i.e. overdriving the tires–ever) the AI stay out of the way. Mostly. Show up with a bad tune/slow car, or lock up the brakes, and I will be punished. Have had the same experience since FM2. On FM3,4 I did not see a way to choose driver level in career. Whew!!

ive only had a problem with the drivarats on the nurburgring GP track, on the rest they aren’t too bad. although on a couple of occasions I have had one just shoot right past me on a straight and be unable to catch up to. but thankfully you don’t need to come in first to get a gold medal heh.

ehh, I like the forza 2 and 3 AI’s, if you knock them they literately try to take you out; you would need the rewind a lot in those games . don’t know about the drivatar experience but it seams bad, also about the making profiles on people driving.

I’ve seen some of the same things: Mainly Drivatars braking on straight aways, for no reason. This was a bug commonly found in Activision/Eutechnix’s NASCAR Series

I’ve all seen:

  1. Drivatar’s who are your friends are overly aggressive and do not drive like the actual person

  2. Drivatar’s under performing and lurking in the back

  3. Drivatar’s Causing major wrecks and holding up the bottom half of the field.

They need an option to turn off or block specific drivatars from your single player races. and to fix the racing AI.

I actually think the AI in FM5 is superb and generally a leap forward for racing game AI.

I agree based on the drivatars I race against but there are plenty of other people who come up against drivatars that seem to misbehave a lot more.

I have the solution! Two of them, actually:

Option 1: Add a one-lap qualifying race where collisions are turned off and all cars star from the pole position. The final race’s grid order is determined by these lap times.
Option Two: Add a difficulty option to allow players to choose where they start, rewarding handicapped starting position with a credit bonus.

I’d go for Option 1, myself. I think the rationale used for the current system was if they didn’t do it that way, career wouldn’t be much different from rivals. Racers would start from the pole and it would just turn into another hotlapping session. That’s a valid point. Unfortunately, I think the cure is worse than the disease. There really is no way to get a gold medal in most career races starting from 16th in a two-lap race without bashing and smashing your way to the front. It creates a lot of bad habits that must then be unlearned when going into MP. And, as we have all seen, a lot of folks don’t bother unlearning those bad habits.

The other option is making the career races longer, which I think would result in a mixed reaction from the players, at best. Better races, slower overall progression.

This is where better tuned difficulties should come into play rather than forcing everyone to do qualifying.

Clean golds and first places are definitely possible in every career race. The problem is the difficulty settings do not adjust the speed of the AI enough to cater for all players.

Don Ente had a few replays in Forza TV that showed some clean golds. I think I may have one up there too.

I am currently “tidying up” my career for the golds that the last update took away and have found very little difficulty even when I accidentally started with an untuned Limited Edition car.

It is clear that there are plenty of people not happy with career as it is but I sincerely hope they do not change it in Forza 6 in a way that potentially makes it incredibly boring for those not struggling now.

what, no.

The problem is 2 - 3 lap races… Not the difficulty.

Um no. Let me rephrase my previous post. My opinion regarding how career mode can be improved for my enjoyment is to make the AI quicker on unbeatable difficulty with no other changes. This is opinion not something that is right or wrong.

In my career mode I do not want or need longer races and I do not want qualifying. If other people want them so be it.

EDIT: I also can not see how a wider range of difficulties ie AI speeds can be a bad thing.
