That awesome feeling of getting better

This is kind of a ‘toot my own horn’ post, but I don’t care. I’m happy.

After playing this game seriously for nearly a week, buying a wheel (still haven’t heard the end of that from the fiancee), and tuning from trial and error, I’ve absolutely noticed an improvement.

I tuned a Mercedes Benz 190E for the Bernese Alps Stadtplatz. Before learning about tuning and the wheel, my time was a 1:42.xxx. I did three laps, improving my time by 1+ second each time. My best time on that track now is 1:36.xxx. I’ve honestly never felt more accomplished in a game in my life. I’m still at least 5 seconds out from a top 250 time, but at least I know I’m improving.

So, when did you get that feeling of “wow I’ve actually improved”? How did it feel to you?

It is a great feeling! I remember thinking I was quick in FM1 and that was offline. Missed FM2 as I had my little one then but came into FM3 with the same opinion that I was fast in racing games. Oh how wrong was I. 1st championship I entered I was lapped by lap 10 around Silverstone out of a 30 lap race. That was when I knew I had to learn and improve. Have played more or less everyday over the past 4 years and gone from getting times in the 5000’s to times in the top 100’s/50’s. I still feel the same now if I beat my time by 1000ths as I did when I was knocking seconds off. It’s what keeps the game going

Congrats man!!! keep up the good work and enjoy the new found speed!!!

ok, I will admit it…when in the CBH I got a 2:14…I got up and danced
And I had just improved my time of 2 tenths…the thing with racing games is that they are really mean in the beginning, it takes a lot of time and effort to learn, but starting to see some results is very rewarding

that’s a great feeling. :))) it’s a lot of hard work in the beginning but then a few weeks, month, years later you will earn a lot of success.

I got that feeling the first time I beat a time by someone that I know is a much much better racer than me. Ironically my situation was similar to yours. My first full build/tune was also a 190E.

Trust me, I know exactly how you feel. Just keep going now…

Thanks guys. I had to take a break yesterday so I didn’t burn myself out over this game, but I think I’ll be grinding at some times again tonight. I really want a top 250 time!

Racing games with realistic physics are like old school games. The player has to experiment and practice in order to get the skills required to advance.

Today’s games increase player skills in different ways. Imagine if a driver level in Forza 5 would provide your car with extra speed, acceleration, braking and handling. The sense of accomplishment
feels empty. Without risk and hardship, the experience is just a hollow shell. Companies will wrap that hollow shell with very fancy wrapping paper to get you to buy it.

I am still awaiting that awesome feeling hahaha since FM2.

No, I get it sometimes, I once bought a tune and for the weeks I drove that car, I was as fast as everyone else. And a few times, I’ll be in a lobby where I’m clearly one of the best 3. But reality always sets back in eventually. Right now, I do think I’m as good as I’ll ever be in the series, ~top 5-8% is the max amount of time and effort I’m putting in and it’s probably the limit of my hand/eye coordination. I don’t feel “awesome” actually buying a tune that’s already 5 stars and LB car. I feel awesome when my crap tuned TransAm wins.

Nice. I’m trying to do the same. Say…since your fiancee is already mad at you can you get me a wheel too? That way my GF wont get mad at me for spending the money?

I just got a nice lap on Laguna Seca with the X-Bow, A class, and got position #14 on LB, “just” (because that last second is tough as hell) 1,2 and something seconds behind the leader…
Which is pretty cool, since I’m a Forza player only from last october. I’m in the first page of the LB! (I should take a picture…). Well I also had a fantastic tune by the BAM guys.
Probably my position won’t last for long, but let me just savour the moment, it’s always a good sensation when you feel that you are getting some results.

Happened to me the other day actually man, and it feels great lol. Just sitting there with a big smile on you’re face feeling so accomplished.

When you are trying hard that green little box in top-right corner of the screen is priceless

Agreed. For many, a Forza game ends when they have simply completed achievements or the career mode; but, the real fun of Forza lies in learning how to become a better virtual racer and improving on your abilities, one lap at a time.

i get the “wow” feeling every once in a while-- i’ll set a hot lap around a track, then after a few months of honing a tune and getting better at driving, i’ll go back and lap the same track and sometimes it’s actually embarrassing. just now i went and hot lapped Spa. gained i think it was 4 seconds off my old time, and tbh i think i’m still running WAY too much downforce for that track, but i was too lazy to switch to a low-downforce tune.

depends on the cars weight. alot of time can be gained or lost on that uphill bend and carrying that speed all the way down the straight. there is also a slight bend on the final straight before the chicane where you want to get thru without lifting so you can keep the momentum.

The Feeling is Good I Remember When I Got My First Top 100 Time In Maple Valley On Forza 4.

I broke the top 1000 last night! Sitting in the 800’s on one of the Road America maps (there’s two almost identical ones. The one without that ‘Alternate’ turn). I’m going to mainly work on that today. I think I’ve missed turn one on that track at least 20x…
