Steering wheel or controller?

Thrustmaster TX + GTE Wheel Add-on + Playseat Revolution WRC + ordered the T3PA pedals and waiting for the H-shifter.

Been playing racing games with a controller for years and years. Finally took the leap and bought a steering wheel setup when i got my xbox one in april. I bought the Thrustmaster TX set and will never go back to using a controller. The pedals could be alot better but at least there’s upgrades for replacing the pedals, cause the brake pedal on the TX is junk. Now I need to get a setup for my ps3’s now. Steering wheel setup completely changes the gameplay and makes the game alot more enjoyable to play. Wife hates the space the wheel and seat take up but she can get over it. Boys gotta have their toys.

Ive had many wheels for PC over the years, have the Fanatec for Xbox 360 with CSR Elite pedals… My brother has the TX, and I really dont like the feel of it. Especially the standard pedals, and the Basher Boards fly off the shelves too quickly to order them… But I really can’t justify spending $400 on the wheel, $150 on the GT rim (the only rim that I like the feel of, my bro has all rims), $80 for the pedal adapter… Its just too much. Especially when I already have a perfectly good set that I feel is a downgrade to go to the TX. Much less customize-able on the wheel software, and I feel that the force feedback feel has a larger dead zone than what I would like. Overall forces are lower in the TX as well, but they are more descriptive in what they tell you…

In general, I felt that M$ wanted to have its existing customers have to buy new peripherals, and changed the standard to justify that to its customers. I dont feel that it is an improvement, just different. When I use the TX on PC, I like it, but I dont like it on Xbox.

In the meantime, until everything gets sorted and prices go down, I am using the controller. I also prefer the feel of the 360 controller more than the XB1… Primarily the trigger feel. XB1 triggers are very light on their spring rate…

The wheel wont lead to faster times in FM5 unless the controller is something you really struggle with. The only tracks I can see a benefit for the wheel is indy oval and bernese alps. All other tracks, its just a matter if hitting killer lines no matter what you use.

If you got the money and it wont hurt you financially, buy it! Loved having a wheel for my computer games.

I don’t really struggle with the controller. I used the wheel for Forza 4 but ended up back with the controller. I didn’t see an increase in lap times as you stated. I do plan on buying a wheel in the future. But I’m holding out for a little bit to see if the prices come down at all.

I’m using a controller and get along just fine. I wouldn’t mind getting a wheel but the only way I would is if I had a rig to mount it on, and had the room for it. I never liked sitting in a chair with a wheel in your lap and the pedals on the floor sliding away as your racing.

Race games were basically unplayable for me on XBox 360 til I got the wireless wheel and Horizon. I learned the handheld on Forza 5 waiting for wheels to come out. I’ve been hoping for an equivalent to the 360 wireless, just about ready to give up and start shopping for a mounted wheel. Just have to figure out how to fit it into the family living-room scene.

My bro uses the Fanatec Wheel stand and has good results with it. I mount mine to my desk. Pretty sure that there is a newer version out, but just wanted to show that you dont need a large rig to use a mounted wheel.

I would like a more budget oriented wheel for the Xbox One. The 458 Spider is just a little too ‘cheap’ But something in the $200 range with FF. Something like the Logitech Force GT wheel would be perfect, if made by Thrustmaster, compatibility with the upgraded pedals…

I would use a steering wheel because it kinda makes it feel like you are driving the car and it might make you a better driver

@Kornswag: I spoke to xbox support a good few months back (and before I got my TX wheel) with regards to these adaptors, and was told in no uncertain terms that if they know one is been used with the xbox 360/xbox one; a permanent console ban will be placed on that users console.

To anyone looking to get a wheel for the Xbox one, and if you happen to reside in the uk; the TX is available on amazon for £250. The only thing I wish was better on the TX are the pedals, but the T3PA’s should be a good enough fix for that. Its not like the TX is the only Thrustmaster to have the same pedals though, the new T300RS 1080DOR wheel for the PS4 looks to have exactly the same pedals; just with different metal covers on the throttle/brake.

With regards to the fanatec, this is a quote from Worm in the project cars thread down in the off topics/general discussion.

Dont know if that is true or not, but it is a very reasonable assumption to make; since it goes along similar lines to macros and rapid fire mods.

Anyway, I have the TX wheel and it is brilliant. Yes the default 458 wheel rim feels a bit on the cheap side, same with the pedals (but the pedals work perfectly fine regardless, better than the MS wheels pedals in my opinion). But the wheel base itself is really very good. It has good force feedback, I have been using it on the pc as well. Baring a few issues people have had, it also seems to hold up fairly well. I have the V1 version that didn’t come with the .45 firmware pre-loaded, but not had an issue with the wheel itself so far. Most people are reporting quick responses from Thrustmaster if they have an issue, though there are some that seem to have a harder time; but that can be the same for any company out there.

The only thing I’ve ever heard about it is that it isn’t against the TOS to use these adapters and have never heard otherwise. I can see it being against the TOS if you were to use a macro or script to get rapid fire or some other unusual playstyle that gives a clear advantage. But since the one shown in the video seems to be using it just to translate inputs from the wheel and not being used in any inappropriate manner, I can’t see how this would result in any negetive effects, not to mention that i’ve never heard of anyone getting banned for using them either. Lastly, unless you are using the above mentioned rapid fire or some other ill-conceived script to gain an advantage, which is likely to be detectable since no one alive can press a button 1000 times a second, it would be virtually impossible for MS to detect the adapter otherwise.

The fact that MS may or may not have stopped officially supporting the CSR due to the auto-clutch feature doesn’t mean that the wheel will simply stop working or that Turn10/MS would actually patch code for the wheel to be unusable, as I still use my CSR for Forza 3/4 just fine with all features working as intended. Maybe I’m just not seeing it, but can you point out to me what you mean by saying “Is it really that hard to figure out”? I’ve heard various stories about why MS and Fanatec are no longer partners, and as I’ve said, they are just stories…

It would be great if we could get an official response about this from Helios or the like since I am also considering to check out the setup for myself.

I am only passing on what I was told by a Microsoft xbox support employee. All official xbox controllers have a security chip in them, by using a 3rd party device to allow the use of any usb based control input; you are circumventing the security that MS has in place on controller peripherals.

As I understand it, the adapter authenticates using the official Xbox One controller, binding that controller to the adapter for the entire length of the playsession. Therefore, the device does not circumvent any security since you are indeed required to use the official controller to play, otherwise the device wouldn’t work.

What it’s doing is tricking the system into thinking that the device is authorized when it’s not, as the player has swapped controllers out for an UN-authorized one which is blatantly trying to get around those security measures. these kind of adapters are nothing new in gaming and in computing to get around security and there is a reason why Microsoft has it’s policies on 3rd party controllers and other peripherals. While I do see your point that in this situation it’s not really harming gameplay as opposed to players using modified hardware to gain clear advantages, it is Microsoft’s service and their rules.

Controller all the way. It’s hard to get a good enough wheel for console within what I’d consider a reasonable budget. Besides, I’m pretty used to driving with a controller- I’ve been doing it since Gran Turismo 1 in 1997.

I could probably drive reasonably in a real car in traffic using an Xbox controller at this point, lol.

if microsoft trys to punish you for making their equipment work on their other equipment i would see a lawyer. they prom8ised pc drivers for the ms wheel and never delivered. if it was illegal ms would have already filed a patten infringement suit. the law has already ruled on it just like jail breaking cell phones. and with microsofts money there wont be a shortage of lawyers willing to take the case and make it class action. and microsoft would be very hard pressed to use an auto clutch argument when the same feature is available on the game pad and every wheel for forza. its microsofts service and their rules? within the law. do you think microsoft could ban all black people from live claiming their service their rules? they cant.

but it’s not their equipment. The wheel comes from a different company that they gave the authorization and sufficient security measures for the 360 not the One. That by no means says that the peripheral has to be compatible with other products from Microsoft. Your misinterpreting the last part of my post as the point is that All players agreed to those terms when we signed up for Xbox Live and it clearly states that UN-autorised hardware isn’t allowed.

id do you have separate accounts for the 360 and the one? nope. therefore it is authorized on live. ms still has a legal problem, never mind that a signature or a notary stamp is required for a contract. ms cant even prove who agreed on the account. i had to change my password last week because they believed i got hacked and someone else was useing my account. i had no idea anyone was on my account, i have no idea what they did or what they agreed to. hopefully they just played for free. they dont appear to have stolen anything or switched any of my games to different accounts. ms evidently shut down all usage until one of us had the computer call the phone number on the account and punch in the code given. why they couldn’t tell from the isp which was real i dont know. my steam account was hacked, somebody in michigan tried to buy every game on steam and gift them in one transaction. they exceed my ballance so the bank cancled the transaction. now i cant use that card on steam anymore because of reversed charges they let someone else make. i’m sure they had to click on something for them to try to use my accounts. i’m also sure it wasn’t me.

i’m starting to think it might be my nephew or my ex sister in laws relatives. she has family back in michigan who have went to prison for stealing but i have no way of proving it. and microsoft didn’t even tell me where else my account was logged into from. but i think microsoft knew because my account tried to sign in from two locations at the same time. i’m not even sure of that tho. i think two people clicked “use this person” and ms couldn’t tell which really was “this person” despite my static isp. i had to have them call me with a code.

No one ever said it would stop working on the 360, it was in reference to the Xbox ONE which is why you shouldn’t quote without context in different threads. Why is this argument continually going on? Your questions have been answered a thousand times already and it’s been stated over and over again. You use something 3rd party that is unauthorized you risk getting banned. Fanatec isn’t happening for now. Can it, maybe but very doubtful…end of story.

On another note rdo3, if you keep up with this nonsense it will be your last day on the forum. I’m near enough pulling the trigger on it now. This will be your final warning…forever.

I use the TX wheel, just can’t do long sessions with my old hands and the controller. It wasn’t cheap, but it was much cheaper than a single track day IRL.
