Steering - controller

Thanks to Voodoo I finally understand deadzones!

Don’t play Forza a lot, but doing the new challenges, not doing very well and after watching top driver replays I know where I weak and it’s steering. I noticed top drivers are in perfect position coming out of turns and accelerate hard with no steering motion. If I slightly tap my freek things are bad, really bad and even on straights the slightest tap causes to much wheel turn. Deadzone adjustment is not going to help because there seems to be wheel turn with a controller with the slightest tap…or maybe not too much wheel turn, but the cars reaction too quickly.

Question- I just don’t have the finesse with the left thumb stick because just use to slamming it playing FPS and need to work on it? I really don’t want to use a wheel and not even sure that would help.

Edit - Don’t want to get into a public debate, but if anyone good driver has any advice send me a PM, Thanks.

Due to the speed sensitivity set in the game you are overestimating how sensitive the controller is. You want to exit the corners as straight as possible as you have the most grip. You also have to ease the throttle on as smoothly as possible.

Actually I’m pretty good with throttle and braking…don’t use any assists. Brake straight in on hard turns and pretty smooth when accel. Since doing the challenges with the faster class of cars than I’m use to - my steering skill was really bad. Really became obvious when trying TCS and most noticeable on the last turns in Mazda. The slightest tap on the S turn before the hairpin with no accel causes the car to get squirrelly.

Thanks

The sensitivity on those upper level R and any of the top balanced P class cars can be exceptionally “twitchy” indeed.

The Mazda you’re talking about is no doubt the 787b, which is 'extremely twitchy" when on the brink of its power.

I found it very extra responsive to steering inputs. But once I got into the 'leaning into the corner" rather than just turning into it, steering became a great deal easier in general.

However, on exit, I sometimes found I was over steering, thus causing the car to loose control easily.

I fixed that by allowing the car to simply correct its self as I began the straights, almost letting off all input, the steering centred itself, and I just powered on. But dropping the “Tap Steering” certainly helped fix 80+% of my steering issues.

I managed to get the Mazda up to 6th from the top in the Asia Pacific Region, and while I’ve slipped down since the Jag made its appearance, I’m still positioned at 12th.

But before getting to understand the twitchyness of the car, I barely managed to even finish a race without major damage or just generally gave up.

A hint, don’t put the taller thumbstick said on the Elite when you get it. Stick with the middle ones. They have the concave tops, and the thumbs rests nicely in them.

Plus, the length gives a smoother turning ability, while the taller ones ad to the twitchiness, and have the convex tops. Making thumb steadiness a little more uncomfortable on longer sessions.

The smallest ones are great for FPS games, again being concave helps a great deal with getter control over the player in the game.

Additionally, no matter what dome might say, you DO NOT GET A WIDER TURNING CIRCLE with the tallest thumbsticks.

Reason being. The diameter on the standard thumsticks centre poet is the exact same size as the Eliyes. Additionally. The bore of the opening in the face of the controller panel is the same diameter as the standard controller.

Thus the distance traveled left and right is the exact same distance as that of the standard controller. Making the turning circles the same. The Elite controllers are more sensitive than the standard ones, but well worth nabbing one.

They are really worth the money…

I used to “Tap Steer” and wondered why I was all over the track, even in a straight line or approaching corners and bends.

Generally, hopeless.

Since changing the dead zones to 0-100 in both steering, acceleration and brakes. Then swapping to the Elite controller. Fitting the middle set of Convex thumbs ticks, I’m now able to have much more control over steering. Best $au199.99 I’ve ever spent on an accessory in my life, well worth it.

Note: you can still achieve the same results with a standard controller, but the Elite has it over the standrad by ten.

Putting just the slight pressure on the left the stick, and moving get it slightly left or tight gave me cleaner steering. Additionally, playing via cockpit mode, one gets a much better idea of how the car is really handling from within.

While in the 3rd person view point, the car looks like it’s on a lolly pop stick, and exhibits much more “twitchy ness” than in the cockpit view point. Something that ads to the poor steering ability etc. while in cockpit view, there’s less twitchy ness exhibited by the car.

Do try it for several days rather then just having a go at it. As the old habits are imprinted In your nervous system.

Here’s a known fact (google it if nessesary), in order to break a habit or pattern of any kind, the mind-body connection needs at least 21 days to sever old neurological pathways and set up new ones. That sounds like a lot.

However, it’s that time period that’s required to break bad habits. Hense the reason so many ppl stop with weight loss programs, or give up on setting new habits etc etc. they usually stop around week two, less than 14 days.

It took me at least 3weeks to come to grips with the new controller. But I kept at it. The same with regards to breaking the “Tap Steering” system that doesn’t give you great control over the car in general.

Please do try the slight pressure to just hold your thumb on the thumbstick, and just “lean” into corners rather than push the stick left n right. You’ll become much more efficient with it as time goes on.

This explains it, thanks. I’ve been tap streering since the first Forza and really didn’t hurt much because I never tried to TT anything over B class until this weekly challenges came out. Even with my bad habit still noticed the slightest tap was bad news…

Yes, I agree and know about retraining…I have the newer speedfreek, but agree the Elite would be a better option with a high stick for more sensitivity. And much harder to get use too.

The hardest change would be moving to cockpit view…never done that.

Thanks for the great advice!

Can Voodoo get me some good numbers I’ve asked this ? Before and got 50 different answers on how it effects the game event the new elite controller is madning

What exactly do you mean by numbers mate?

And why do you find the Elite Controller maddening??

I’d like to help. I’m getting the best out of the Elite mate. So what’s the exact problem…

I have the Forza 6 controller, the standard controller, and the Halo Controller that was released the same time frame as the Elite Controller. It was the first released with the standard headphone jack and slightly heavier rumble motors.

Plus of course the Elite Controller.

But do let us know what the exact issue is…
